Abstract

A hybrid modular storage fetching system is described. In an example implementation, an automated guided vehicle of the hybrid modular storage fetching system includes a drive unit that provides motive force to propel the automated guided vehicle within an operating environment. The automated guided vehicle may also include a container handling mechanism including an extender and a carrying surface, the container handling mechanism having three or more degrees of freedom to move the carrying surface along three or more axes. The container handling mechanism may retrieve an item from a first target shelving unit using the carrying surface and the three or more degrees of freedom and place the item on a second target shelving unit. The automated guided vehicle may also include a power source coupled to provide power to the drive unit and the container handling mechanism.

a vertical divider dividing the compartment into two or more sub-compartments, the two or more sub-compartments being accessible via the opening in the first wall.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the transport device includes a platform that engages with the modular container by sliding into a space between the base portion and the separate shelving unit formed by the one or more legs of the modular container.

6. The system of claim 3 , wherein the transport device engages with the modular container by coupling with one or more sides of the modular container.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transport device includes:

a platform supporting a transport surface, the platform sliding the transport surface horizontally along a horizontal axis, the platform adapted to rotate the transport surface about a vertical axis; and

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the CHM includes an extender mountable at a proximal end to the frame of the AGV proximate to the item storage rack; and

the transport device includes a transport surface connected at a distal end of the extender, the transport surface being movable by the extender perpendicularly relative to the face of the item storage rack.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of shelves of the item storage rack are vertically arranged on the item storage rack, the plurality of shelves including at least three horizontal shelves coupled with the frame of the AGV and positioned within reach of the transport device.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein:

the AGV includes one or more controllers that determine a height of a first shelf of the plurality of shelves and instruct the CHM to place the item on the first shelf of the plurality of shelves at the height.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the AGV further comprises:

a drive unit that provides motive force to propel the AGV within an operating environment; and

a guidance system that determines a location of the AGV within the operating environment, the guidance system including one or more sensors that detect and process navigation markers to locate the AGV as the AGV traverses the operating environment.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the AGV has a front, a rear opposing the front, a left side extending from the front to the rear, and a right side opposing the left side and extending from the front to the rear; and

while the AGV is positioned such that the left side or the right side faces a face of the separate shelving unit, one or more controllers instruct the CHM to:

engage, by the CHM, the transport device with the item on the separate shelving unit,

move the item, by the transport device, from the separate shelving unit to a target shelf of the item storage rack,

put the item on the target shelf by the transport device and the CHM, and

disengage, by the CHM, the transport device from the item.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the AGV further comprises:

one or more controllers communicatively coupled to the CHM and a drive unit of the AGV, the one or more controllers:

signaling the drive unit to propel the AGV to a defined location in an operating environment, the separate shelving unit being located at the defined location,

signaling the CHM to retrieve the item from the one of the plurality of shelves of the item storage rack, and

signaling the CHM to place the item on the separate shelving unit.

14. An item handling and storage mechanism for an automated guided vehicle (AGV), comprising:

an item storage rack mountable to a frame of the AGV, the item storage rack including a plurality of shelves, each shelf of the plurality of shelves capable of storing an item;
