Abstract

An apparatus and method for a heat shield with an integrated air filter assembly is disclosed. Wherein the air filter assembly comprising a filter material circumferentially extending such that the filter material surrounds at least a portion of an interior cavity of the air filter, a distal end cap affixed to a distal end of the filter material, and a wire support extending along at least a portion of an exterior surface of the filter material; and wherein the heat shield is configured to direct cooler air into an air intake conduit extending from an intake portion of an automobile engine for combustion.

Claims (27)

1. An air filtration system for an internal combustion engine, the system comprising:

an air filter assembly for entrapping particulates flowing within an airstream into an air intake of the engine;

a conduit for conducting the airstream to the air intake;

a heat shield for directing cool air into the conduit, wherein the heat shield having at least a housing portion and a mount portion whereby the housing portion having a plurality of walls thereon, wherein the heat shield further having ribs as structural supports, the rib including a first rib extending from a first wall of the plurality of walls, the first wall being perpendicularly toward an interior of the heat shield, and a second rib extending from a second wall of the plurality of walls, wherein the first rib has a length being at least a majority of a length of the first wall;

the plurality of walls adapted to be in fluid communication with the conduit; and

a first gasket attached to a top edge of the heat shield, whereby the first gasket is sealingly engaged with a hood of a vehicle whereby the first gasket is configured on the heat shield and is configured to seal with the hood of the vehicle for which the air filtration system is utilized; and

a second gasket attached to a bottom edge of the heat shield to shield heat from engine bay.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the air filter assembly includes a filter material disposed between an end cap and an opening to an interior cavity.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the filter material circumferentially extends around at least a portion of the interior cavity.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the opening is adapted to be joined to the conduit and supported by the heat shield.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the conduit is configured to extend from the air filter assembly to the air intake.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the conduit includes one or more of any of an arm, a transition, and a cylindrical region.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein any one or more of the arm, the transition, and the cylindrical region comprises angled bends ranging between substantially 0 degrees and substantially 90 degrees.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein any one or more of the arm, the transition, and the cylindrical region comprises a hybrid construction of two or more materials.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the heat shield comprises a metallic material that is sufficiently durable and temperature resistant to retain its configuration during installation and operation when coupled with the air intake.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the heat shield includes a thermal coating disposed on one or more surfaces so as to provide heat resistance properties to the heat shield.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the heat shield comprises a shape and a size that are adapted to a configuration of the internal combustion engine.

12. A method for filtering an airstream into an internal combustion engine, comprising:

mounting a heat shield near the engine said heat shield having at least a gasket attached to a top edge of the heat shield, whereby the first gasket is sealingly engaged with a hood of a vehicle to prevent heat from entering the airstream into the internal combustion engine;

supporting an air filter assembly by way of the heat shield wherein supporting the air filter assembly includes a plurality of ribs that comprising at least a first rib extending from a first wall of the heat shield, and a second rib extending from a second wall of the heat shield to increase a rigidity of a connection between the mount portion and a housing portion, wherein the first wall is extending perpendicularly toward an interior of the heat shield, and wherein the first rib has a length being at least a majority of a length of the first wall;

coupling a conduit with the air filter assembly; and

routing the conduit to an air intake of the engine.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein mounting includes fastening the heat shield within an engine bay of a vehicle that includes the internal combustion engine.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein mounting includes installing a first gasket onto a top of the heat shield.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein coupling includes joining the conduit with the air filter assembly such that the airstream is drawn through a filter material of the air filter assembly before being drawn through the conduit and into the air intake.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein supporting includes extending the conduit through an opening disposed on the heat shield before joining the conduit with the air filter assembly.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein routing includes assembling one or more of any of an arm, a transition, and a cylindrical region.
