Abstract

This disclosure includes flow spool riser segment assemblies that are suitable for managed pressure drilling (MPD) and that can be lowered (e.g., when connected to other riser segment assemblies) through a rotary of a drilling rig. Some embodiments are configured to have portions of the flow spool connected (e.g., without welding) below the rotary.

a first connector configured to be removably received within the opening of the retainer to secure the first connector to the main tube, the first connector defining a lumen having an inlet through which fluid can enter the first connector in a first direction, and an outlet through which fluid can exit the first connector in a second direction that is different than the first direction, wherein the lumen of the first connector is configured to be in fluid communication with the fitting lumen; and

wherein the retainer includes one or more members coupled to the body and movable between a first position in which the first connector is permitted to enter or exit the opening of the body, and a second position in which the one or more members prevent the first connector from entering or exiting the opening of the body.

2. The assembly of claim 1 , comprising a valve configured to be in fluid communication with the fitting lumen, the valve having a longitudinal flow axis that is more parallel than perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the main tube.

3. The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the valve is configured to be coupled between the fitting and the first connector.

4. The assembly of claim 3 , comprising a second connector coupled between a first end of the valve and the fitting.

5. The assembly of claim 4 , wherein the second connector comprises a protrusion and the fitting comprises a recess configured to slidably and removably receive the protrusion of the second connector.

6. The assembly of claim 3 , comprising a third connector coupled between a second end of the valve and the first connector.

7. The assembly of claim 6 wherein the third connector comprises a protrusion and the first connector comprises a recess configured to slidably and removably receive the protrusion of the third connector.

8. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first connector defines a secondary lumen with a second exit sealed by a removable cover, the second exit configured such that if the cover is removed, fluid can exit the second connector in a third direction that is different than the first direction and the second direction.

9. The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the valve comprises a double ball valve.

10. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the fitting comprises a longitudinal axis that is substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the main tube.

11. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the retainer is configured to releasably engage the first connector without welding to secure the first connector in fixed relation to the main tube.

12. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more members are rotatable between the first position and the second position.

13. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein a maximum transverse dimension of the assembly is greater than 60.5 inches if the first connector is coupled to main tube, and is less than 60.5 inches if the first connector is not coupled to the main tube.

14. A method comprising:

lowering a riser segment assembly through a rotary of a drilling rig, wherein the riser segment assembly includes:

a main tube defining a primary lumen and a collar defining a lateral opening in fluid communication with the primary lumen;

two flanges each coupled to a different end of the main tube, each flange comprising:

a mating face configured to mate with a flange of an adjacent riser segment; and

a central flange lumen configured to be in fluid communication with the primary lumen of the main tube;

a fitting coupled to the collar, the fitting defining a fitting lumen in fluid communication with the lateral opening;

a retainer coupled to the main tube, the retainer comprising:

a body having a top, a bottom, and an opening extending between the top and the bottom of the body; and

one or more members coupled to the body and movable between a first position and a second position;

connecting, below the rotary, a first connector to the retainer by:

moving the first connector into the opening of the retainer, the first connector defining a lumen having an inlet through which fluid can enter the first connector in a first direction, and an outlet through which fluid can exit the first connector in a second direction that is different than the first direction, wherein the lumen of the first connector is configured to be in fluid communication with the fitting lumen; and

moving the one or more members between the first position, in which the one or more members permit the first connector to enter or exit the opening of the body, and the second position, in which the one or more members prevent the first connector from entering or exiting the opening of the body.

15. The method of claim 14 , comprising connecting a valve to the fitting to provide fluid communication between a valve lumen and the fitting lumen, wherein the valve comprises a longitudinal flow axis that is more parallel than perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the main tube.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the valve is connected to the fitting below the rotary.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein connecting the first connector to the main tube causes the lumen of the first connector to be in fluid communication with the valve lumen.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein a first end of the valve is coupled to a second connector and connecting the valve to the fitting comprises coupling the second connector to the fitting.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the second connector comprises a protrusion, the fitting comprises a recess, and coupling the second connector to the fitting comprises slidably and removably inserting the protrusion of the second connector into the recess of the fitting.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein a second end of the valve is coupled to a third connector and connecting the first connector to the main tube comprises coupling the first connector to the third connector.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the third connector comprises a protrusion, the first connector comprises a recess, and coupling the first connector to the third connector comprises slidably and removably inserting the protrusion of the third connector into the recess of the first connector.

22. The method of claim 14 , comprising releasably engaging the first connector with the retainer without welding to secure the first connector in fixed relation to the main tube.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein connecting the first connector to the retainer restricts lateral movement of the first connector relative to the main tube.

24. The method of claim 14 , wherein moving the one or more members between the first position and the second position includes rotating at least one of the one or more members.

25. A riser segment assembly comprising:
