Abstract

Optically clear adhesives (OCA) with UV blocking below 380 nm are described. The OCA comprise a UV blocking package of UV absorbers and hindered amine light stabilizers. The UV blocking package is suitable for a variety of OCA, including PIB-based OCA, styrenic block copolymer-based OCA, silicone-based OCA, or acrylic-based OCA. The OCA with UV blocking in the invention are particularly suitable as laminating films, tapes or encapsulants for adhering display electronic devices, e.g., LCD displays, LED displays, flexible and foldable displays, and touch screens.

Claims (64)

1. An optically clear adhesive composition comprising:

(a) about 85 to about 99.7% of a thermal curable silicone pressure sensitive adhesive comprising:

(i) about 94.5% to about 99.998% vinyl functional silicone;

(ii) about 0.001 to about 5% of a hydride functional siloxane polymer or oligomer; and

(iii) about 0.001 to about 0.5% of a Pt catalyst; and

(b) about 0.3-15% of a mixture of UV absorbers comprising:

(i) about 0.1 to about 5% hydroxyphenyl benzotriazole or its derivatives;

(ii) about 0.1 to 5% % benzophenone or its derivatives; and

(iii) about 0.1-5% % hindered amine light stabilizer

wherein the optically clear adhesive composition has a percent transmittance (% T) of less than 10% at less than 380 nm and greater than 90% at greater than 410 nm, measured in accordance with ASTM E903.

2. The optically clear adhesive composition of claim 1 , wherein the (a) thermal curable silicone pressure sensitive adhesive composition comprises:

(i) the vinyl functional silicone is a mixture and/or a reaction product of polydimethylsiloxane polymers, silicone resins, and silanes that contain one or more vinyl functional group,

(ii) the hydride functional siloxane polymer (ii) is a polydimethylsiloxane polymer or oligomer with terminal functional groups of SiMe 2 H, or with pedant functional groups of SiMeH, or mixtures thereof, and the average weight molecular weight of from about 400 to 100,000 g/mol, and

(iii) the Pt catalyst is Speier's catalyst H 2 PtCl 6 , Karstedt's catalyst, or alkene-stabilized platinum (0).

3. An optically clear adhesive composition comprising:

(a) about 85 to about 99.7% a UV curable silicone pressure sensitive adhesive, comprising:

(i) about 99.5% to about 99.999% (meth)acryloxy functional silicone and

(ii) about 0.001 to about 0.5% of a photoinitiator catalyst and

(b) about 0.3-15% of a mixture of UV absorbers comprising:

(i) about 0.1 to about 5% hydroxyphenyl benzotriazole or its derivatives;

(ii) about 0.1 to 5% % benzophenone or its derivatives; and

(iii) about 0.1-5% % hindered amine light stabilizer

wherein the optically clear adhesive composition has a percent transmittance (% T) of less than 10% at less than 380 nm and greater than 90% at greater than 410 nm, measured in accordance with ASTM E903.

4. The optically clear adhesive composition of claim 2 , wherein the (meth)acryloxy functional silicone is a mixture and/or a reaction product of polydimethylsiloxane polymers, silicone resins, and silanes or/and siloxane polymers that contain one or more (meth)acryloxy functional group.

5. An optically clear adhesive composition comprising:

(a) about 85 to about 99.7% of a UV curable polyisobutylene-based pressure sensitive adhesive composition comprising:

(i) about 1 to about 30% of a (meth)acrylate monomer, a (meth)acrylate oligomer or mixtures thereof;

(ii) about 10 to about 90% a polyisobutylene polymer

(iii) about 5% to about 50% a liquid diluent, a tackifier, or mixtures thereo;

and

(iv) about 0.001 to 5% a photoinitiator and

(b) about 0.3-15% of a mixture of UV absorbers comprising:

(i) about 0.1 to about 5% hydroxyphenyl benzotriazole or its derivatives;

(ii) about 0.1 to 5% benzophenone or its derivatives; and

(iii) about 0.1-5% % hindered amine light stabilizer

wherein the optically clear adhesive composition has a percent transmittance (% T) of less than 10% at less than 380 nm and greater than 90% at greater than 410 nm, measured in accordance with ASTM E903.

6. The optically clear adhesive composition of claim 5 ,

(i) wherein the (meth)acrylate monomer is a mono or multifunctional (meth)acrylic monomers,

(ii) wherein the (meth)acrylate oligomer is a (meth)acrylic functionalized polyisobutylene, polybutadiene, hydrogenated polybutadiene, or a polyolefin having greater than one (meth)acrylic functional group per molecule, wherein the reactive functional group is selected from the group consisting of terminal methacrylates, pendant methacrylates, terminal acrylates, and/or pendant acrylates; and mixtures thereof, wherein the (meth)acrylate oligomer or mixtures thereof have a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of from about 1000 to about 95,000 g/mol, and

(iii) the liquid diluent is mineral oil, a wax, polyisobutylene, polybutene, or a synthetic liquid polymer.

7. An optically clear adhesive composition comprising:

(a) about 85 to about 99.7% of a UV curable styrenic block copolymer-based pressure sensitive adhesive comprising:

(i) about 5% to about 30% of a (meth)acrylate monomer, or a (meth)acrylate oligomer, or mixtures thereof;

(ii) about 5% to about 30% a styrenic block copolymer having fully hydrogenated and saturated soft blocks;

(iii) about 55% to about 79.99% a liquid diluent, a tackifier, or mixtures thereof; and

(iv) about 0.01% to about 5% a photoinitiator; and

(b) about 0.3-15% of a mixture of UV absorbers comprising:

(i) about 0.1 to about 5% hydroxyphenyl benzotriazole or its derivatives;

(ii) about 0.1 to 5% % benzophenone or its derivatives; and

(iii) about 0.1-5% % hindered amine light stabilizer;

wherein the optically clear adhesive composition has a percent transmittance (% T) of less than 10% at less than 380 nm and greater than 90% at greater than 410 nm, measured in accordance with ASTM E903.

The optically clear adhesive composition of claim 7 , wherein the styrenic block copolymer is fully hydrogenated, having saturated soft blocks, wherein the soft block are selected from the groups consisting of ethylene, propylene, butylene, isobutylene, ethylene-propylene, ethylene-butylene, and mixtures thereof.

9. The optically clear adhesive composition of claim 8 , wherein the styrenic block copolymer is a triblock, a diblock, or mixtures thereof.

10. An article comprising the optically clear adhesive composition of claim 1 .

11. A method of making an optically clear adhesive film comprising the steps of:

(1) preparing a curable optically clear adhesive claim 1 in an organic solvent;

(2) coating the curable optically clear adhesive solution onto a first release-liner;

(3) evaporating the organic solvent to form a substantially solvent-free film at a temperature of about 60 to about 150° C.; and

(4) laminating a second release-liner onto the substantially solvent-free film.

12. The method of making the optically clear adhesive film of claim 11 , further comprising the step of:

(5) irradiating the substantially solvent-free film to UV light at 250-410 nm with a dosage of UVA&V 1-5 J/cm 2 .

13. An article comprising the optically clear adhesive composition of claim 2 .

14. An article comprising the optically clear adhesive composition of claim 3 .

15. An article comprising the optically clear adhesive composition of claim 5 .
