Hand controller for robotic surgery system
A Robotic control system has a wand, which emits multiple narrow beams of light, which fall on a light sensor array, or with a camera, a surface, defining the wand's changing position and attitude which a computer uses to direct relative motion of robotic tools or remote processes, such as those that are controlled by a mouse, but in three dimensions and motion compensation means and means for reducing latency.
1. A hand controller for a robotic surgery system, the hand controller comprising:
a body shaped to be grasped by a user's hand and extending between a proximal end and a distal end;
a first control pivotally attached to the body, the first control configured to permit a user to control a first function of a surgical instrument; and
a second control supported by a side of the body at a location between the proximal end and the distal end, the second control configured to move in a direction parallel to a length of the body to permit a user to control, via a linear input, a second function of the surgical instrument, the second function being different from the first function.
2. The hand controller of claim 1 , wherein the first control comprises at least one lever.
3. The hand controller of claim 2 , wherein the first function of the surgical instrument comprises adjusting a distance between first and second jaws of an end effector of the surgical instrument.
4. The hand controller of claim 3 , wherein the distance between the first and second jaws of the end effector of the surgical instrument is adjusted responsive to movement of the at least one lever.
5. The hand controller of claim 1 , wherein the first control comprises at least one finger opening.
6. The hand controller of claim 1 , wherein the second function of the surgical instrument comprises a linear movement of an end effector of the surgical instrument.
7. The hand controller of claim 6 , wherein:
a linear movement of the second control causes the linear movement of an end effector.
8. The hand controller of claim 1 , wherein the second control comprises a finger slider.
9. The hand controller of claim 1 , wherein control of at least one of the first or second function causes provision of a feedback to the user.
10. The hand controller of claim 9 , wherein the feedback comprises haptic feedback.
11. The hand controller of claim 10 , wherein the first function of the surgical instrument comprises adjusting a distance between first and second jaws of an end effector of the surgical instrument, and wherein the haptic feedback comprises pinching feedback.
12. The hand controller of claim 1 , further comprising a spring configured to bias the first control.
13. The hand controller of claim 12 , wherein the spring is configured to bias the first control to a position in which the first function of the surgical instrument is not activated.
14. The hand controller of claim 13 , wherein the position comprises an open position.
15. A hand controller for a robotic surgery system, the hand controller comprising:
a body shaped to be grasped by a user's hand and extending between a proximal end and a distal end;
a first control supported by the body, the first control configured to cause activation of a first function of a surgical instrument; and
a second control supported by a side of the body at a location between the proximal end and the distal end, the second control configured to move along the side of the body to cause, via a user's linear input, activation of a second function of the surgical instrument, the second function being different from the first function.
16. The hand controller of claim 15 , wherein the first control comprises a lever pivotally attached to the body.
17. The hand controller of claim 15 , wherein the first function of the surgical instrument comprises adjusting a distance between first and second jaws of an end effector of the surgical instrument.
18. The hand controller of claim 15 , wherein the second function of the surgical instrument comprises a linear movement of an end effector of the surgical instrument.
19. The hand controller of claim 18 , wherein:
a linear movement of the second control causes the linear movement of an end effector.
20. A method of operating a robotic surgery system comprising a hand controller, the method comprising:
activating a first function of a surgical instrument by turning about a pivot point a first control of the hand controller, the first control pivotally coupled to a body of the hand controller that extends between a proximal end and a distal end; and
activating a second function of the surgical instrument by linearly moving a second control of the hand controller along a side of the body, the second control being supported on the side of the body at a location between the proximal end and the distal end, the second function being different from the first function.
