SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR TREATING AT LEAST ONE OF RHINITIS, CONGESTION, AND RHINORRHEA
The invention generally relates to systems and methods for treating at least one of rhinitis, congestion, and/or rhinorrhea via thrombus formation.
1 . A method for treating at least one of rhinitis, congestion, and rhinorrhea within a nasal cavity of a patient, the method comprising:
causing thrombus formation within one or more blood vessels associated with mucus producing and/or mucosal engorgement elements, resulting in local hypoxia of the mucus producing and/or mucosal engorgement elements, thereby decreasing production of mucus and/or mucosal engorgement.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein causing thrombus formation is accomplished via delivery of energy from a plurality of electrodes of an end effector advanced within a nasal cavity of a patient, wherein energy is delivered to one or more target sites associated with the mucus producing and/or mucosal engorgement elements at a level sufficient to cause the thrombus formation.
3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the energy is delivered at a level sufficient to trigger detachment of endothelial cells from blood vessel walls while minimizing and/or preventing damage to blood vessel walls.
4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the energy is delivered at a level sufficient to maintain integrity of the blood vessel walls.
5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the endothelial detachment initiates thrombotic cascade within the lumen of the one or more blood vessels.
6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the thrombotic cascade and subsequent thrombi formation includes an accumulation of fibrin admixed with blood.
7 . The method of claim 2 , wherein delivery of energy results in ablation of targeted tissue at the one or more target sites.
8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the ablation is thermal ablation.
9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the ablation is caused by delivery of radio-frequency energy.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the mucus producing elements comprise submucosal glands.
11 . A system for treating at least one of rhinitis, congestion, and rhinorrhea within a nasal cavity of a patient, the system comprising:
a device comprising an end effector including a plurality of electrodes;
a controller operably associated with the device and configured to:
receive data from the device associated at least with presence and/or a depth/location of blood vessels associated with mucus producing and/or mucosal engorgement elements at a position of each of the plurality of electrodes within the nasal cavity; and
process the data to determine a level of energy to be delivered by each of the plurality of electrodes such that the energy delivered at each position by each of the plurality of electrodes is sufficient to:
cause thrombus formation within one or more blood vessels associated with the mucus producing and/or mucosal engorgement elements, resulting in local hypoxia of the mucus producing and/or mucosal engorgement elements, thereby decreasing production of mucus and/or mucosal engorgement.
12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the energy is delivered at a level sufficient to trigger detachment of endothelial cells from blood vessel walls while minimizing and/or preventing damage to blood vessel walls.
13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the energy is delivered at a level sufficient to maintain integrity of the blood vessel walls.
14 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the endothelial detachment initiates thrombotic cascade within the lumen of the one or more blood vessels.
15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the thrombotic cascade and subsequent thrombi formation includes an accumulation of fibrin admixed with blood.
16 . The system of claim 12 , wherein delivery of energy results in ablation of targeted tissue at one or more target sites associated with the mucus producing and/or mucosal engorgement elements.
17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the ablation is thermal ablation.
18 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the ablation is caused by delivery of radio-frequency energy.
19 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the mucus producing elements comprise submucosal glands.
20 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the energy delivered further causes vacuolar degeneration and/or necrosis or necrotic-like cell death of neural tissue associated with the mucus producing and/or mucosal engorgement elements.
