Abstract

A software application executing on a server and communicating with an agent in a wireless access point predicts a type of a computing device wirelessly connected via a radio frequency link to the wireless access point. The application receives an indication of a model of the computing device from the wireless access point, and further receives one or more characteristics of the computing device from the wireless access point. The application then predicts the type of the computing device associated with the one or more of the indication of the model, and characteristics, of the computing device.

Claims (38)

1. A method for improving performance of a wireless link between a computing device and an access point, the method comprising:

receiving at the access point a unique device identifier associated with a computing device within a network, the unique device identifier being wirelessly transmitted from the computing device;

transmitting the unique device identifier to a server coupled to the access point;

receiving a plurality of performance characteristics from the server, the plurality of performance characteristics being associated with the unique device identifier; and

adjusting at least one characteristic of the wireless link between the computing device and the access point based on the received plurality of performance characteristics.

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the unique device identifier is associated with a model version of a cellular mobile telephone.

3. The method according to claim 1 wherein the at least one characteristic of the wireless link comprises an uplink transmission rate.

4. The method according to claim 1 wherein the at least one characteristic of the wireless link comprises an uplink transmission power level.

5. The method according to claim 1 wherein the server accesses a database that associates the unique device identifier with the plurality of performance characteristics using a correlation stored within a database of performance characteristics across a plurality of device types.

6. The method according to claim 1 further comprising the steps of receiving a policy from the server, the policy being associated with the unique device identifier and adjusting at least one second characteristic of the wireless link based on the policy.

7. The method according to claim 6 wherein the at least one second characteristic comprises a quality of service parameter.

8. The method according to claim 1 wherein the computing device is a network-connected sensor.

9. The method according to claim 1 wherein the computing device is a network-connected home automation device.

10. The method according to claim 1 wherein the network is a cellular network.

11. A system for improving performance of a wireless link between a computing device and an access point, the system comprising:

an access point comprising:

a first interface wirelessly coupled to a computing device in a first network, the first interface receives a unique device identifier from the computing device;

a network processor, the network processor manages the wireless link with the computing device;

a second interface coupled to the processor, the second processor transmits the unique device identifier onto a second network;

a server comprising:

a third interface coupled to the second network, the third interface receives the unique device identifier from the access point;

a first processor coupled to the third interface, the processor associates a plurality of performance characteristics with the unique device identifier;

a fourth interface coupled to the first processor, the fourth interface transmits the plurality of performance characteristics to the access point; and

wherein the network processor adjusts at least one characteristic of the wireless link between the computing device and the access point based on the received plurality of performance characteristics.

12. The system according to claim 11 wherein the first network is a cellular network.

13. The system according to claim 11 wherein the unique device identifier is associated with a model version of the mobile cellular telephone.

14. The system according to claim 11 wherein the at least one characteristic of the wireless link comprises an uplink transmission rate.

15. The system according to claim 11 wherein the server accesses a database that associates the unique device identifier with performance characteristics across a plurality of device types.

16. The system according to claim 11 the first processor associates a policy with the unique device identifier, transmits the policy to the access point, and adjusts at least one characteristic of the wireless link based on the policy.

17. The system according to claim 16 wherein the at least one second characteristic comprises a quality of service parameter.

18. The system according to claim 11 wherein the computing device is a network-connected sensor.

19. The method according to claim 1 wherein the computing device is a network-connected home automation device.

20. A computer-readable, non-transitory, storage medium, comprising computer instructions, that when executed, causes a wireless access point, communicating with a server, to improve performance of a wireless link between a computing device and the access point, the method comprising:

receiving at the access point a unique device identifier associated with the computing device within a network, the unique device identifier being wirelessly transmitted from the computing device;

transmitting the unique device identifier to the server coupled to the access point;

receiving a plurality of performance characteristics from the server, the plurality of performance characteristics being associated with the unique device identifier;

receiving a policy information from the server, the policy information being associated with the unique device identifier; and

adjusting at least one characteristic of the wireless link between the computing device and the access point based on the received plurality of performance characteristics and the policy information.
