Abstract

There is provided a patient support that may be adjustable in height, width, length or a combination thereof. The patient support may be useable with normal sized patients or with bariatric patients. The patient support has a variety of features to enhance operability and/or functionality, including a width adjustable caster frame, width adjustable deck portions, a width adjustable headboard and an extendible foot board to provide extra length. An enhanced lift mechanism can accommodate bariatric patients and alternative functionality in achieving deck positions improves patient comfort. Various parts of the patient support including deck panels and the footboard may be removed and replaced with ease without complicated connectors.

Claims (33)

1. A patient support apparatus for supporting a patient thereon, said patient support apparatus comprising:

a base;

a deck for supporting a mattress thereon, said deck having a width;

a headboard supported relative to said deck, said headboard having a width and first and second headboard sections movably coupled together and together spanning and defining the width of the headboard;

a lift mechanism for supporting said deck on said base; and

wherein each of the widths of said deck and said headboard are adjustable.

2. The patient support according to claim 1 , wherein the width of each of said deck and said headboard is simultaneously adjustable.

3. The patient support according to claim 1 , wherein one of said first and second headboard sections forms a central portion of the headboard when the width of said headboard is increased.

4. The patient support according to claim 3 , wherein said first headboard section forms said central portion, and said second first headboard section is slidably mounted to said first headboard section.

5. The patient support according to claim 4 , wherein each of said first headboard section and said second first headboard section has a downwardly depending post for mounting said headboard relative to said deck.

6. The patient support according to claim 3 , wherein each of said first headboard section and said second first headboard section has an outer surface, said outer surfaces of said first headboard section and said second first headboard section being substantially contiguous when said first headboard section and said second first headboard section are moved to a fully retracted position and being spaced apart when said first headboard section and said second first headboard section are moved to an expanded position.

7. The patient support according to claim 1 , wherein said deck further has a longitudinal axis orthogonal to the width of the deck, further comprising a footboard supported relative to said deck and extendible relative to the deck along said longitudinal axis.

8. The patient support according to claim 7 , wherein said foot board is extendible relative to the deck along said longitudinal axis independent of said deck.

9. The patient support according to claim 1 , wherein said lift mechanism is mounted relative to said base and mounted to said deck, and said lift mechanism adjustable to adjust a width of said lift mechanism.

10. The patient support according to claim 9 , wherein the width of each of said deck and said lift mechanism is simultaneously adjustable.

11. A patient support apparatus for supporting a patient thereon, said patient support apparatus comprising:

a base;

a deck for supporting a mattress thereon, said deck having an adjustable width and a longitudinal axis orthogonal to the width of the deck;

a lift mechanism for supporting said deck on said base;

a headboard supported relative to said deck; and

a footboard supported relative to said deck and spaced from said headboard a distance, and said footboard being configured to be extendible relative to the deck along said longitudinal axis independent of said deck to thereby increase the distance between said footboard and said headboard.

12. The patient support according to claim 11 , wherein said footboard is mounted relative to said deck by a pair of linkage arms, said linkage arms pivotally mounted relative to said deck.

13. The patient support according to claim 12 , wherein each linkage arm of said pair of arms is foldable.

14. The patient support according to claim 13 , wherein each linkage arm of said pair of arms is configured to unfolded to extend said footboard to a fully extended position and is configured to fold beneath said footboard when said footboard is moved to a fully retracted position.

15. The patient support according to claim 12 , wherein said footboard has a footprint, each linkage arm is configured to pivot to extend said footboard to a fully extended position and is further configured to pivot beneath said footboard within said footprint when said footboard is moved to is fully retracted position.

16. A patient support apparatus for supporting a patient thereon, said patient support apparatus comprising:

a base;

a deck for supporting a mattress thereon, said deck having an adjustable width;

a headboard supported relative to said deck, said headboard having an adjustable width; and

a footboard supported relative to said deck and spaced from said headboard a distance, and said footboard being configured to be extendible relative to said deck along said longitudinal axis independent of said deck to thereby increase the distance between said footboard and said headboard.

17. The patient support according to claim 16 , further comprising a lift mechanism for supporting said deck on said base, and said base having an adjustable width.

18. The patient support according to claim 17 , wherein said lift mechanism has a width being co-linear or extending parallel to the width of said deck, and the width of said lift mechanism being adjustable.

19. The patient support according to claim 17 , wherein said base includes a plurality of caster wheels, each caster wheel of said plurality of caster wheels has an orientation, and wherein at least one of said caster wheels is configured to adjust its orientation when the width of the base is adjusted.
