Abstract

The methods disclosed herein of generating three-dimensional lattice structures and reducing stress shielding have applications including use in medical implants. One method of generating a three-dimensional lattice structure can be used to generate a structure lattice and/or a lattice scaffold to support bone or tissue growth. One method of reducing stress shielding includes generating a structural lattice to provide sole mechanical spacing across an area for desired bone or tissue growth. Some examples can use a repeating modified rhombic dodecahedron or radial dodeca-rhombus unit cell. Some methods are also capable of providing a lattice structure with anisotropic properties to better suit the lattice for its intended purpose.

Claims (14)

1. A method for manufacturing an implant having reduced stress shielding, the method comprising:

fabricating a lattice structure comprising a plurality of repeating unit cells;

identifying a principal axis of the lattice structure;

defining a loading axis within 90 degrees of the principal axis;

fabricating the implant such that the implant comprises an implant body configured such that at least a portion of the implant body includes the lattice structure, the implant body being configured such that, once implanted between two areas of tissue, the implant body defines an implant space between the two areas of tissue, and the implant space provides sole mechanical spacing between the two areas of tissue in at least one plane that intersects the loading axis.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the repeating unit cell comprises a rhombic dodecahedron structure.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the repeating unit cell comprises a radial dodeca-rhombus structure.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising identifying a second loading axis oriented at an angle offset from the loading axis and fabricating the implant such that the implant provides an elastic modulus along the loading axis that is less than an elastic module along the second loading axis.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the elastic modulus of the implant along the loading axis comprises a range between and including 0.3 GPa and 12 GPa.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the elastic modulus of the implant along the second loading axis comprises a range between and including 2 GPa and 25 GPa.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant comprises a porous structure.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising fabricating the lattice structure as a structure comprising a plurality of openings and a plurality of interconnections configured to allow bone growth.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one plane comprises a substantially flat plane.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one plane comprises a substantially curved plane.
