Abstract

Methods, systems and devices for pre-operatively planned shoulder surgery guides and implants. Pre-operative planning methods for designing a shoulder surgery guide based on considerations of multiple factors affecting the outcome of shoulder surgery. Methods of using surgery guides and implants in patients undergoing shoulder surgery.

Claims (18)

1. A pre-operative planning method for designing a shoulder surgery guide, the method comprising:

virtually positioning an implant through various ranges of motion, wherein virtually positioning the implant comprises:

obtaining, with one or more processors, a virtual representation of the implant;

obtaining, with the one or more processors, a virtual representation of a subject; and

virtually positioning, with the one or more processors, the virtual representation of the implant through the various ranges of motion in the virtual representation of the subject;

measuring impact locations where the virtual representation of the implant impacts virtual representations of bones of the subject through the respective ranges of motion, wherein the virtual representation of the subject includes the virtual representations of the bones of the subject;

determining an implant position, location, or size based on the measured impact locations, wherein determining the implant position, location, or size comprises determining the implant position, location or size that compensates for the measured impact locations to provide for functional range of motion; and

designing the shoulder surgery guide based on the determined implant position, location, or size, wherein designing the shoulder surgery guide comprises determining one or more of peripheral guide structures, cupped surfaces for the peripheral guide structures, and lengths of radial arms that couple to the peripheral guide structures based on the determined implant position, location, or size.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein virtually positioning the virtual representation of the implant through the various ranges of motion, and measuring the impact locations comprises virtually positioning the virtual representation of the implant through the various ranges of motion, and measuring the impact locations based on images taken from the subject prior to surgery.

3. A pre-operative planning method for designing a shoulder surgery guide, the method comprising:

determining soft tissue insertion points, the soft tissue insertion points comprising one or more of a muscle, tendon, or ligament of a subject;

virtually positioning a virtual implant at different positions based on the determined soft tissue insertion points, the virtual implant being a virtual representation of an implant, wherein virtually positioning the virtual implant comprises:

obtaining, with one or more processors, a virtual representation of the subject; and

virtually positioning, with the one or more processors, the virtual representation of the implant at the different positions on the virtual representation of the subject;

determining changes to soft tissue lengths relative to pre-operative conditions based on the virtual positioning;

determining a position from the different positions of the virtual implant at which changes to the soft tissue lengths is less than or equal to a threshold; and

designing the shoulder surgery guide based on the determined position, wherein designing the shoulder surgery guide comprises determining one or more of peripheral guide structures, cupped surfaces for the peripheral guide structures, and lengths of radial arms that couple to the peripheral guide structures based on the determined position.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein virtually positioning the virtual implant at different positions based on the determined soft tissue insertion points, and determining changes to soft tissue lengths relative to pre-operative conditions based on the virtual positioning comprises virtually positioning the virtual implant at the different positions based on the determined soft tissue insertion points, and determining the changes to the soft tissue lengths relative to the pre-operative conditions based on the virtual positioning based on images taken from the subject prior to surgery.
