Abstract

Improved method and apparatus for signaling of reference pictures used for temporal prediction. The signaling schemes and construction process for different reference picture lists in HEVC Working Draft 5 (WD5) are improved.

Claims (44)

1. A video decoder apparatus, comprising:

a receiver configured to receive a single set of indexes associated with a temporary ordered list to generate a modified reference picture list from the temporary ordered list of reference pictures; and

a processor configured to:

generate the temporary ordered list of reference pictures including one or more short term reference pictures from a Decoded Picture Buffer (DPB) that are associated with a current picture being decoded, the one or more short term reference pictures in the temporary ordered list being ordered based on temporal distance from the current picture; and

generate the modified reference picture list by, for each entry in the modified reference picture list, obtaining an index from the single set of indexes that is associated with a respective reference picture of the temporary ordered list and listing a reference to the respective reference picture corresponding to the index at the entry in the modified reference picture list.

2. The video decoder apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to order, in the temporary ordered list of reference pictures, the one or more short term reference pictures that are associated with the current picture and that are temporally before the current picture by the temporal distance from the current picture.

3. The video decoder apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to order, in the temporary ordered list of reference pictures, the one or more short term reference pictures that are associated with the current picture and that are temporally before the current picture by the temporal distance from the current picture, followed by the one or more short term reference pictures that are associated with the current picture and that are temporally after the current picture by the temporal distance from the current picture.

4. The video decoder apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the processor is configured to determine, based on a first syntax element, that a reference picture list for the current picture is to be the modified reference picture list; and

on condition that the first syntax element is equal to a specified value, the processor is configured to generate the modified reference picture list using the single set of indexes, as a second syntax element.

5. The video decoder apparatus of claim 4 , wherein:

the first syntax element is a syntax element ref_pic_list_modification_flag_l0; and

the second syntax element is a syntax element ref_pic_set_idx.

6. The video decoder apparatus of claim 5 , wherein, on condition that the first syntax element is equal to another specified value:

the first syntax element specifies that the second syntax element is not present for use in generating the modified reference picture list; and

the single set of indexes is set to zero.

7. A decoding method of generating a modified reference picture list, the method comprising:

receiving a single set of indexes associated with a temporary ordered list to generate the modified reference picture list from the temporary ordered list of reference pictures;

generating the temporary ordered list of reference pictures including one or more short term reference pictures from a Decoded Picture Buffer (DPB) that are associated with a current picture being decoded, the one or more short term reference pictures in the temporary ordered list being ordered based on temporal distance from the current picture; and

generating the modified reference picture list by, for each entry in the modified reference picture list, obtaining an index from the single set of indexes that is associated with a respective reference picture of the temporary ordered list and listing a reference to the respective reference picture corresponding to the index at the entry in the modified reference picture list.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising ordering, in the temporary ordered list of reference pictures, the one or more short term reference pictures that are associated with the current picture and that are temporally before the current picture by the temporal distance from the current picture.

9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising ordering, in the temporary ordered list of reference pictures, the one or more short term reference pictures that are associated with the current picture and that are temporally before the current picture by the temporal distance from the current picture, followed by the one or more short term reference pictures that are associated with the current picture and that are temporally after the current picture by the temporal distance from the current picture.

10. The method of claim 7 , further comprising determining, based on a first syntax element, that a reference picture list for the current picture is to be the modified reference picture list,

wherein, on condition that the first syntax element is equal to a specified value, the generating of the modified reference picture list includes generating the modified reference picture list using the single set of indexes, as a second syntax element.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

the first syntax element is a syntax element ref_pic_list_modification_flag_l0; and

the second syntax element is a syntax element ref_pic_set_idx.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein, on condition that the first syntax element is equal to another specified value:

the first syntax element specifies that the second syntax element is not present for use in generating the modified reference picture list; and

the method further comprises setting the single set of indexes to zero.

13. A non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions, which when executed by a computer, enable a decoding method of generating a modified reference picture list, the method comprising:

receiving a single set of indexes associated with a temporary ordered list to generate the modified reference picture list from the temporary ordered list of reference pictures;

generating the temporary ordered list of reference pictures including one or more short term reference pictures from a Decoded Picture Buffer (DPB) that are associated with a current picture being decoded, the one or more short term reference pictures in the temporary ordered list being ordered based on temporal distance from the current picture; and

generating the modified reference picture list by, for each entry in the modified reference picture list, obtaining an index from the single set of indexes that is associated with a respective reference picture of the temporary ordered list and listing a reference to the respective reference picture corresponding to the index at the entry in the modified reference picture list.

14. The computer readable medium of claim 13 , the method further comprising ordering, in the temporary ordered list of reference pictures, the one or more short term reference pictures that are associated with the current picture and that are temporally before the current picture by the temporal distance from the current picture.

15. The computer readable medium of claim 13 , the method further comprising ordering, in the temporary ordered list of reference pictures, the one or more short term reference pictures that are associated with the current picture and that are temporally before the current picture by the temporal distance from the current picture, followed by the one or more short term reference pictures that are associated with the current picture and that are temporally after the current picture by the temporal distance from the current picture.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 13 , the method further comprising determining, based on a first syntax element, that a reference picture list for the current picture is to be the modified reference picture list,

wherein, on condition that the first syntax element is equal to a specified value, the generating of the modified reference picture list includes generating the modified reference picture list using the single set of indexes, as a second syntax element.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein:

the first syntax element is a syntax element ref_pic_list_modification_flag_l0; and

the second syntax element is a syntax element ref_pic_set_idx.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein, on condition that the first syntax element is equal to another specified value:

the first syntax element specifies that the second syntax element is not present for use in generating the modified reference picture list; and

the method further comprises setting the set of indexes to zero.
