Abstract

Some embodiments relate to a luer connector comprising a housing having a hollow bore therethrough, a first end, and a second end, a male luer tip supported by the housing configured to rotate with respect to the housing, the luer tip having a first open end and a passageway through the luer tip in fluid communication with the first open end, and a substantially rigid internal member extending into the passageway of the luer tip toward the first open end of the luer tip. In some embodiments, at least one of the luer tip and the internal member can be axially moveable between a first closed position and a second open position relative to the other of the luer tip and the internal member. Further, the luer tip and the internal member can cooperate such that rotation of the luer tip in a first direction relative to the housing increases an axial displacement between the first open end of the luer tip and an end portion of the internal member.

Claims (26)

1. A luer connector comprising:

a housing comprising:

a hollow bore,

a first end, and

a second end; and

a valve member being configured to transition between an open position and a closed position, the valve member comprising:

a male luer tip comprising a first open end, a second end, and a passageway extending through the male luer tip in fluid communication with the first open end;

an internal member extending into the passageway of the male luer tip from the first open end of the male luer tip and towards the second end, the internal member being supported by the housing; and

a sealing member being configured to inhibit fluid communication through the second end of the male luer tip when the valve member is in the closed position, wherein:

at least one of the male luer tip and the internal member is axially moveable relative to another of the male luer tip and the internal member to transition the valve member between the open position and the closed position;

when the valve member is in the closed position, the sealing member provides a substantially fluid-tight seal with respect to the second end of the male luer tip so as to substantially prevent fluid flow through the second end of the male luer tip; and

when the valve member is in the open position, at least a portion of the internal member extends through the sealing member to permit fluid flow through the internal member and through the second end of the male luer tip.

2. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the male luer tip is configured to axially move relative to the internal member and the housing to transition the valve member between the open position and the closed position.

3. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the sealing member is positioned on a distal end face of the male luer tip.

4. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the sealing member comprises a slit to facilitate extension of the internal member through the sealing member as the valve member transitions from the closed position towards the open position.

5. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the sealing member comprises one or more pliable end portions.

6. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the valve member further comprises one or more tabs being configured to interact with a second connector to facilitate transition of the valve member from the closed position and the open position when the second connector engages the luer connector.

7. The luer connector of claim 6 , wherein the housing comprises at least one stop surface being configured to interact with the one or more tabs of the valve member to prevent further movement of the one or more tabs in a proximal direction.

8. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the valve member is biased towards the closed position.

9. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the valve member further comprises a second sealing member configured to sealingly engage the male luer tip and the internal member.

10. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the internal member comprises:

a sidewall;

a fluid pathway extending within the internal member; and

one or more opening extending through the sidewall and in fluid communication with the fluid pathway.

11. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the housing further comprises a shroud surrounding at least a portion of the male luer tip.

12. The luer connector of claim 11 , wherein the shroud further comprising threads being configured to engage corresponding threads of a second connector to removably engage the luer connector to the second connector.
