Abstract

Methods of delivering bone cement to within a vertebral body. An access cannula is directed into the vertebral body with a stylet disposed within a tube and extending through a valve in an open position. The stylet is removed from the access cannula such that the valve moves from the open position to a closed position in which the valve prevents egress of fluid from the access cannula. The bone cement is delivered through the access cannula with the valve in the open position. A delivery cannula may be directed into the access cannula, and the bone cement may be delivered through the delivery cannula. The delivery cannula may be prefilled with the bone cement. A bone cement mixer may be coupled to the access cannula and operated to direct the bone cement through the access cannula. Pressure from the bone cement may move the valve to the open position.

Claims (21)

1. A method of delivering bone cement to within a vertebral body with a system including a stylet, an access cannula including a handle, a tube extending from the handle, a valve, and a bone cement device, said method comprising:

directing the access cannula into the vertebral body with the stylet disposed within the tube and extending through the valve in an open position;

removing the stylet from the access cannula such that the valve moves from the open position to a closed position in which the valve prevents egress of fluid from the access cannula;

coupling the bone cement device to the handle of the access cannula;

operating the bone cement device to direct the bone cement through the access cannula, wherein pressure from the bone cement moves the valve from the closed position to the open position; and

delivering the bone cement to within to vertebral body through the access cannula with the valve in the open position.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the handle includes a fitting, said method further comprising, after the step of removing the stylet from the access cannula, leaving the fitting open while performing other aspects of a procedure.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the system includes a void creation tool, said method further comprising directing the void creation tool into the access cannula such that the valve moves from the closed position to the open position.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the system includes access cannulae including the access cannula, and a second stylet, wherein a second of the access cannulae includes a second handle, a second tube extending from the second handle, and a second valve, said method further comprising:

directing the second access cannula into the vertebral body with the second stylet disposed within the tube such that the access cannulae are simultaneously inserted within the vertebral body, wherein creation of a void space adjacent the access cannula results in a buildup of pressure adjacent a distal end of the second access cannula; and

removing the second stylet from the second access cannula such that the second valve moves from an open position to a closed position in which the second valve prevents egress of fluid from the second access cannula against the buildup of pressure.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising discontinuing operation of the bone cement device, wherein a release of the pressure permits the valve to move from the open position to the closed position.

6. A method of delivering bone cement within a vertebral body with a system including a stylet, delivery cannula, and an access cannula including a handle having a fitting, a tube extending from the handle opposite the fitting, and a valve disposed within the handle, said method comprising:

directing the access cannula into the vertebral body with the stylet disposed within the tube and extending through the valve in an open position;

removing the stylet from the access cannula such that the valve moves from the open position to a closed position in which the valve prevents egress of fluid from the fitting of the access cannula; and

directing the delivery cannula through the fitting and the handle of the access cannula and into the access cannula such that the valve moves from the closed position to the open position, wherein the valve is configured to be compressed against the delivery cannula with a force greater than a proximal force of the fluid against the delivery cannula so as to inhibit retraction of the delivery cannula relative to the access cannula;

delivering the bone cement to within the vertebral body through the delivery cannula with the valve in the open position; and

removing the delivery cannula from the access cannula with a force greater than the compressive force from the valve on the deliver cannula so as to move the valve from the open position to the closed position, wherein the fitting remains open while performing other aspects of a procedure without egress of the fluid from the fitting of the access cannula.

The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of directing the delivery cannula into the access cannula further comprises flexing the valve with the delivery cannula, wherein the valve flexes to within a bore of the handle that has a diameter greater than a diameter of the tube of the access cannula.

The method of claim 6 , wherein the system further includes an obturator, said method further comprising, after the step of directing the delivery cannula into the access cannula, advancing the obturator within the delivery cannula to force the bone cement out of the delivery cannula and into the vertebral body.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising filling the delivery cannula with the bone cement prior to directing the delivery cannula into the access cannula.
