Abstract

A system for routing signals in a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) includes one or more local Digital Access Units (DAUs) located at a local location and one or more remote DAUs located at one or more remote locations. Each of the one or more local DAUs includes an optical port coupled to an upstream unit. The upstream unit includes at least one of a repeater, a baseband unit, a Base Transceiver Station (BTS), or a DAU. The one or more remote DAUs are coupled to the one or more local DAUs via one or more optical cables. A distance between the local location and each of the one or more remote locations is greater than two kilometers.

Claims (28)

1. A system comprising:

one or more wireless units configured to receive a radio frequency (RF) signal from an antenna and to convert the RF signal to an optical signal;

one or more local Digital Access Units (DAUs) located at a local location, each of the one or more local DAUs including an optical port coupled to one of the one or more wireless units via an optical cable, the optical port configured to receive the optical signal from the one or more wireless units; and

one or more remote DAUs located at one or more remote locations, wherein the one or more remote DAUs include at least one port and are coupled to the one or more local DAUs via the at least one port.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a mux/demux between the one or more local DAUs and the one or more remote DAUs.

3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a server associated with the one or more local DAUs configured to facilitate traffic related processing.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a server associated with the one or more remote DAUs configured to facilitate traffic related processing.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a base transceiver station connected to one or more of the local DAUs.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein each DAU of the one or more local DAUs and the one or more remote DAUs includes physical nodes and a local router.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more remote DAUs include at least one optical port and are coupled to the one or more local DAUs via one or more optical cables coupled to the at least one optical port.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more remote DAUs include at least one wireless port and are coupled to the one or more local DAUs via the at least one wireless port.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more remote DAUs include at least one ethernet port and are coupled to the one or more local DAUs via the at least one ethernet port.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more remote DAUs are coupled to the one or more local DAUs via wireless link.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more remote DAUs are coupled to the one or more local DAUs via a line of sight link.

12. A method comprising:

receiving, via one or more wireless units a radio frequency (RF) signal from an antenna;

converting the RF signal to an optical signal;

receiving the optical signal from the one or more wireless units at one or more local Digital Access Units (DAUs) located at a local location, each of the one or more local DAUs including an optical port coupled to one of the one or more wireless units via an optical cable, the optical port configured to receive the optical signal from the one or more wireless units; and

providing one or more remote DAUs located at one or more remote locations, wherein the one or more remote DAUs include at least one port and are coupled to the one or more local DAUs via the at least one port.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising a multiplexing/demultiplexing communications between the one or more local DAUs and the one or more remote DAUs.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising performing traffic related processing.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising connecting a base transceiver station connected to one or more of the local DAUs.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein each DAU of the one or more local DAUs and the one or more remote DAUs includes physical nodes and a local router.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more remote DAUs include at least one optical port and are coupled to the one or more local DAUs via one or more optical cables coupled to the at least one optical port.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more remote DAUs include at least one wireless port and communicate with the one or more local DAUs via the at least one wireless port.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more remote DAUs include at least one ethernet port and communicate with the one or more local DAUs via the at least one ethernet port.

20. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more remote DAUs communicate with to the one or more local DAUs via wireless link.

21. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more remote DAUs communicate with the one or more local DAUs via a line of sight link.
