Abstract

Embodiments of systems and methods disclosed herein provide an application development platform in an enterprise computing environment. More specifically, in certain embodiments, systems and methods are disclosed that enable an application development platform to reuse, extend, and/or customize entity-based applications in an enterprise computing environment. The application development platform can extend an entity to include user configured settings including zero or at least one of a property, a permission, an action, a behavior, or a resource to the entity to generate user customized versions of the entity. The applications may be customized by an end user, while allowing the underlying application to be updated without losing any user customizations.

Claims (46)

1. A method, comprising:

importing, by a computer having an application development environment, an application package into the application development environment, the application package including a previously configured entity model of an entity and a file associated with the previously configured entity model, the file containing a property name and corresponding data type for every property of the entity;

creating, by the computer, a placeholder entity model for an entity in an application under development in the application development environment; and

importing, by the computer, the previously configured entity model into the placeholder entity model, the importing including adding entity building blocks of the entity associated with the previously configured entity model to the entity in the application under development in the application development environment, the importing producing an entity model for the entity in the application under development in the application development environment;

receiving, by the computer, user-specified configuration information for the entity building blocks of the entity in the application under development in the application development environment; and

customizing, by the computer based at least in part on the user-specified configuration information for the entity building blocks, the entity in the application under development in the application development environment, wherein the user-specified configuration information for the entity building blocks comprise entity building block settings for the application under development in the application development environment, the customizing having no effect on the previously configured entity model or the entity associated therewith.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein entity building blocks comprise elements of the application development environment.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein adding an entity building block of the entity associated with the previously configured entity model to the entity in the application adds at least one of a property, a permission, an action, a behavior, or a resource to the entity in the application.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the customizing comprises deleting an entity building block from the entity model for the entity in the application, adding an entity building block to the entity model for the entity in the application, or editing entity building block settings in the entity model for the entity in the application.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

marking the entity model for the entity in the application as available for reuse.

6. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

storing the user-specified configuration information for the entity building blocks independently from the application.

7. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

applying the user-specified configuration information for the entity building blocks to a version of the application.

8. A system, comprising:

a processor;

a non-transitory computer-readable medium; and

stored instructions translatable by the processor for:

importing an application package into an application development environment, the application package including a previously configured entity model of an entity and a file associated with the previously configured entity model, the file containing a property name and corresponding data type for every property of the entity;

creating a placeholder entity model for an entity in an application under development in the application development environment; and

importing the previously configured entity model into the placeholder entity model, the importing including adding entity building blocks of the entity associated with the previously configured entity model to the entity in the application under development in the application development environment, the importing producing an entity model for the entity in the application under development in the application development environment;

receiving user-specified configuration information for the entity building blocks of the entity in the application under development in the application development environment; and

customizing, based at least in part on the user-specified configuration information for the entity building blocks, the entity in the application under development in the application development environment, wherein the user-specified configuration information for the entity building blocks comprise entity building block settings for the application under development in the application development environment, the customizing having no effect on the previously configured entity model or the entity associated therewith.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein entity building blocks comprise elements of the application development environment.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein adding an entity building block of the entity associated with the previously configured entity model to the entity in the application adds at least one of a property, a permission, an action, a behavior, or a resource to the entity in the application.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the customizing comprises deleting an entity building block from the entity model for the entity in the application, adding an entity building block to the entity model for the entity in the application, or editing entity building block settings in the entity model for the entity in the application.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the stored instructions are further translatable by the processor for:

marking the entity model for the entity in the application as available for reuse.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the stored instructions are further translatable by the processor for:

storing the user-specified configuration information for the entity building blocks independently from the application.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the stored instructions are further translatable by the processor for:

applying the user-specified configuration information for the entity building blocks to a version of the application.

15. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions translatable by a processor for:

importing an application package into an application development environment, the application package including a previously configured entity model of an entity and a file associated with the previously configured entity model, the file containing a property name and corresponding data type for every property of the entity;

creating a placeholder entity model for an entity in an application under development in the application development environment; and

importing the previously configured entity model into the placeholder entity model, the importing including adding entity building blocks of the entity associated with the previously configured entity model to the entity in the application under development in the application development environment, the importing producing an entity model for the entity in the application under development in the application development environment;

receiving user-specified configuration information for the entity building blocks of the entity in the application under development in the application development environment; and

customizing, based at least in part on the user-specified configuration information for the entity building blocks, the entity in the application under development in the application development environment, wherein the user-specified configuration information for the entity building blocks comprise entity building block settings for the application under development in the application development environment, the customizing having no effect on the previously configured entity model or the entity associated therewith.

16. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein entity building blocks comprise elements of the application development environment.

17. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein adding an entity building block of the entity associated with the previously configured entity model to the entity in the application adds at least one of a property, a permission, an action, a behavior, or a resource to the entity in the application.

18. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the customizing comprises deleting an entity building block from the entity model for the entity in the application, adding an entity building block to the entity model for the entity in the application, or editing entity building block settings in the entity model for the entity in the application.

19. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are further translatable by the processor for:
