Abstract

Drivers and drive systems (e.g., off-axis drive systems, pneumatic motors, multi-gear drive systems, and/or the like), and kits comprising drivers with drive systems, such as those, for example, configured to move a drive shaft.

Claims (38)

1. A driver comprising:

a housing having a handle configured to be gripped by a hand of a user;

a drive shaft having a first end and a second end, the first end of the drive shaft configured to be coupled to an intraosseous device;

a container containing a pressurized gas;

a motor assembly coupled to the second end of the drive shaft and configured to move the drive shaft when the gas enters the motor assembly;

a trigger configured to release the gas into the motor assembly when the trigger is engaged;

the handle of the housing having an opening configured to receive the container containing the gas, where the handle is configured to be coupled to the container, the container comprising a container valve configured to permit the release of gas from the container into a first passage of the housing when the container is coupled to the handle;

wherein the motor assembly comprises:

a rotor housing having a first end, a second end, and an inner wall defining a chamber at least partially between the first end of the rotor housing and the second end of the rotor housing, the second end of the rotor housing having an opening through which the gas enters the motor assembly, and the rotor housing having an exhaust channel configured to permit the gas to exit the motor assembly, the exhaust channel formed between the first and second ends of the rotor housing, and the exhaust channel having an opening directed toward the second end of the rotor housing;

a rotor disposed within the chamber of the rotor housing, the rotor having a first end corresponding to the first end of the rotor housing and coupled to the drive shaft, a second end corresponding to the second end of the rotor housing, and plurality of radial slots extending at least partially between the first end of the rotor and the second end of the rotor; and

a plurality of vanes at least partially disposed within the plurality of radial slots, each vane of the plurality of vanes being coupled to the rotor by a spring configured to bias each vane away from the rotor;

wherein the gas applies a force to at least a portion of the plurality of vanes to move the rotor when the gas enters the motor assembly.

The driver of claim 1 , where the rotor housing, the rotor, and the plurality of vanes cooperate to form a plurality of sub-chambers extending longitudinally with respect to the chamber, the plurality of sub-chambers varying in volume to create a pressure gradient when the gas enters the motor assembly.

3. The driver of claim 2 , where the plurality of vanes are configured to contact the rotor housing to form the plurality of sub-chambers.

4. The driver of claim 1 , where the rotor is coupled to the drive shaft by a gear assembly configured to increase a torque and decrease a rotational velocity of the drive shaft with respect to the rotor.

5. The driver of claim 4 , where the gear assembly comprises:

an inner gear coupled to the rotor to permit rotor to rotate the inner gear;

an outer gear coupled to the drive shaft to permit the outer gear to rotate the drive shaft; and

a plurality of planetary gears coupled to the inner gear and outer gear and configured to transfer rotational motion from the inner gear to the outer gear.

6. The driver of claim 5 , where the inner gear comprises a first diameter and the outer gear comprises a second diameter and the second diameter is greater than the first diameter.

7. The driver of claim 6 , where the inner gear is concentric with the outer gear.

8. The driver of claim 7 , where the planetary gears rotate about the inner gear to transfer rotational motion to the outer gear.

9. The driver of claim 1 , where the handle is configured to be threadably coupled to the container.

10. The driver of claim 1 , where the trigger comprises a trigger valve configured to be engaged to release gas from the first passage into a second passage.

11. The driver of claim 10 , where when the trigger is engaged, the first passage and the second passage are in fluid communication with the motor assembly.

12. An apparatus for penetrating bone and accessing bone marrow, the apparatus comprising:

a penetrator assembly operable to penetrate bone and bone marrow, the penetrator assembly comprising:

an inner penetrator including a stylet and a first hub; and

an outer penetrator including a hollow cannula and a second hub complementary to the first hub, the hollow cannula configured to receive the stylet of the inner penetrator; and

a powered driver configured to releasably attach to the penetrator assembly, the powered driver comprising:

a housing having a handle configured to be gripped by a hand of a user, the handle configured to receive a container containing a pressurized gas;

a motor assembly configured to move the penetrator assembly when the gas enters the motor assembly, the motor assembly comprising:

a rotor housing having a first end, a second end, and an inner wall defining a chamber at least partially between the first end of the rotor housing and the second end of the rotor housing, the second end of the rotor housing having an opening through which the gas enters the motor assembly, and the rotor housing having an exhaust channel configured to permit the gas to exit the motor assembly, the exhaust formed between the first and second ends of the rotor housing, and the exhaust channel having an opening directed toward the second end of the rotor housing;

a rotor disposed within the chamber of the rotor housing and having a first end corresponding to the first end of the rotor housing and coupled to a drive shaft of the powered driver, a second end corresponding to the second end of the rotor housing, and at least one radial slot extending at least partially between the first end of the rotor and the second end of the rotor; and

at least one vane at least partially disposed within the at least one radial slot and coupled to the rotor by a spring configured to bias the at least one vane away from the rotor; and

a trigger configured to release the gas into the motor assembly when the trigger is engaged, wherein the gas applies a force to at least a portion of the at least one vane to move the rotor when the gas enters the motor assembly.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the handle is configured to be threadably coupled to the container.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the trigger comprises a trigger valve configured to be engaged to release gas from the first passage into a second passage, the first and second passages being in fluid communication with the motor assembly.
