Abstract

A Node-B sends a polling message to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). The WTRU sends an uplink synchronization burst in response to the polling message without contention. The Node-B estimates an uplink timing shift based on the synchronization burst and sends an uplink timing adjustment command to the WTRU. The WTRU then adjusts uplink timing based on the uplink timing adjustment command. Alternatively, the Node-B may send a scheduling message for uplink synchronization to the WTRU. The WTRU may send a synchronization burst based on the scheduling message. Alternatively, the WTRU may perform contention-based uplink synchronization after receiving a synchronization request from the Node-B. The WTRU may enter an idle state instead of performing a handover to a new cell when the WTRU moves to the new cell. A discontinuous reception (DRX) interval for the WTRU may be set based on activity of the WTRU.

Claims (32)

1. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), comprising a processor and a memory, the processor and the memory configured to:

receive discontinuous reception (DRX) control information from a network, the DRX control information indicating a time interval that the WTRU is to monitor a downlink control channel;

receive a control message on the downlink control channel while monitoring the downlink control channel according to the DRX control information, wherein the control message indicates that the WTRU is to perform random access;

transmit a random access channel (RACH) preamble and a payload based on receiving the control message on the downlink control channel; and

receive a response from the network, wherein the response comprises a timing adjustment command.

2. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the processor and the memory are further configured to adjust uplink timing in accordance with the timing adjustment command.

3. The WTRU of claim 2 , wherein the processor and the memory are further configured to send a hybrid automatic repeat request (H-ARQ) feedback to the network after adjusting uplink timing according to the timing adjustment command.

4. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the RACH preamble or the payload are sent using an uplink shared channel.

5. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the RACH preamble is associated with an identifier, tag, or sequence number indicated in the control message.

6. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the control message further indicates a time and a resource that can be used by the WTRU to transmit the RACH preamble.

7. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the payload comprises a field indicating a next synchronization time.

8. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the processor and the memory are further configured to enter a DRX mode while the WTRU is in an active state.

9. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the control message includes an identifier, tag, or sequence number that is shorter than a radio network temporary identity.

10. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the transmission of the RACH preamble and the payload corresponds to an uplink synchronization burst transmission.

11. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the response is received from the network after transmitting the RACH preamble and the payload.

12. A method performed by a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), the method comprising:

receiving discontinuous reception (DRX) control information from a network, the DRX control information indicating a time interval that the WTRU is to monitor a downlink control channel;

receiving a control message on the downlink control channel while monitoring the downlink control channel according to the DRX control information, wherein the control message indicates that the WTRU is to perform random access;

transmitting a random access channel (RACH) preamble and a payload based on receiving the control message on the downlink control channel; and

receiving a response from the network, wherein the response comprises a timing adjustment command.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein one or more of the RACH preamble or the payload are sent using an uplink shared channel.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the RACH preamble is associated with an identifier, tag, or sequence number indicated in the control message.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the control message further indicates a resource to be used by the WTRU to transmit the RACH preamble.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the RACH preamble and the payload correspond to an uplink synchronization burst.

17. The method of claim 12 , further comprising entering a DRX mode while the WTRU is in an active state.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the control message includes an identifier, tag, or sequence number that is shorter than a radio network temporary identity.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the WTRU receives the response from the network after transmitting the RACH preamble and the payload.

20. A network node comprising: a processor and a memory, the processor and the memory configured to:

send discontinuous reception (DRX) control information to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), the DRX control information indicating a time interval that the WTRU is to monitor a downlink control channel;

send a control message on the downlink control channel to the WTRU while the WTRU is monitoring the downlink control channel according to the DRX control information, wherein the control message indicates that the WTRU is to perform a random access channel (RACH) transmission;

receive a RACH preamble and a payload after sending the control message on the downlink control channel; and

send a response to the WTRU, wherein the response comprises a timing adjustment command.
