Abstract

Creating a replica of a storage system, including: receiving, by a first storage system from a computing device, data to be stored on the first storage system; reducing, by the first storage system, the data using one or more data reduction techniques; sending, from the first storage system to the second storage system, the reduced data, wherein the reduced data is encrypted; and sending, from the second storage system to a third storage system, the reduced data, wherein the reduced data is encrypted.

Claims (31)

1. A method of creating a replica of a storage system, the method comprising:

receiving, by a first storage system from a computing device, data to be stored on the first storage system;

reducing, by the first storage system, the data using one or more data reduction techniques;

sending, from the first storage system to the second storage system, the reduced data, wherein the reduced data is encrypted; and

sending, from the second storage system to a third storage system, the reduced data, wherein the reduced data is encrypted.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the data received by the first storage system is encrypted using a first encryption key, the data that is sent from the first storage system to the second storage system is encrypted using a second encryption key, and the data that is sent from the second storage system to the third storage system is encrypted using a third encryption key.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising sending, from the third storage system to a computing device associated with a request to read the data, the data encrypted using the first encryption key.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising detecting that the first storage system has become unavailable.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the third storage system is created in response to detecting that the first storage system has become unavailable.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the reduced data that is sent from the first storage system to the second storage system is encrypted with a different key than is used to encrypt the reduced data that is stored on the second storage system.

7. A method of creating a replica of a storage system, the method comprising:

receiving, by a first storage system from a computing device, data to be stored on the first storage system;

sending, from the first storage system to the second storage system, the data, wherein the data is reduced by the first storage system and the reduced data is encrypted; and

sending, from the second storage system to a third storage system, the reduced data, wherein the reduced data is encrypted.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the data that is sent from the first storage system to the second storage system is encrypted using a second encryption key, and the data that is sent from the second storage system to the third storage system is encrypted using a third encryption key.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the data received by the first storage system is encrypted using a first encryption key.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising sending, from the third storage system to a computing device associated with a request to read the data, the data encrypted using the first encryption key.

11. The method of claim 7 further comprising detecting that the first storage system has become unavailable.

12. The method of claim 7 wherein the third storage system is created in response to detecting that the first storage system has become unavailable.

13. The method of claim 7 further comprising reducing, by the first storage system, the data using one or more data reduction techniques.

14. The method of claim 7 further comprising reducing, by the second storage system, data received from the first storage system using one or more data reduction techniques.

15. The method of claim 7 further comprising reducing, by the third storage system, data received from the second storage system using one or more data reduction techniques.

16. The method of claim 7 wherein the data that is sent from the first storage system to the second storage system is encrypted with a different key than is used to encrypt reduced data that is stored on the first storage system.

17. The method of claim 7 wherein the data that is sent from the second storage system to the third storage system is encrypted with a different key than is used to encrypt reduced data that is stored on the second storage system.

18. A computer program product for creating a replica of a storage system, the computer program product including a non-transitory computer readable medium that includes computer program instructions that, when executed, carry out the steps of:

detecting that a first storage system has become unavailable;

identifying a second storage system that contains data that was stored on the first storage system;

identifying a replacement storage system; and

instructing the second storage system to send, to the replacement storage system, the data that was stored on the first storage system, wherein the data that is sent to the replacement storage system is encrypted.

19. The computer program product of claim 18 wherein identifying a replacement storage system further comprises creating the replacement storage system.

20. The computer program product of claim 18 wherein identifying a replacement storage system further comprises identifying the replacement storage system from amongst a plurality of storage systems using one or more selection criterion.
