Claims (62)

1. An eyewear system comprising:

an eyewear assembly comprising:

a frame;

at least one conventional lens held by the frame;

at least one electronic lens configured to present a virtual image that appears to a wearer of the eyewear assembly as if the virtual image is floating in space in front of the wearer;

an electronic tether coupled to the frame; and

a first conductor contained within the electronic tether and configured to deliver power for the electronic lens, wherein the power delivered by the first conductor affects one or more optical characteristics of the electronic lens; and

a first controller in an external electronic device connected to the at least one electronic lens via the electronic tether and configured to adjust the one or more optical characteristics of the at least one electronic lens;

wherein the at least one electronic lens is removably coupled to, or permanently affixed to, or contained within the at least one conventional lens.

2. The eyewear system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electronic lens is removably coupled to the at least one conventional lens.

3. The eyewear system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electronic lens is permanently affixed to the at least one conventional lens.

4. The eyewear system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electronic lens is contained within the at least one conventional lens.

5. The eyewear system of claim 2 , wherein the electronic lens is removably coupled to the at least one conventional lens via a clip-on or snap-on.

6. The eyewear system of claim 5 , wherein:

the clip-on or snap-on is configured to provide an electrical connection that delivers power for the at least one electronic lens;

the clip-on or snap-on comprises a magnet that is configured to magnetically attach the clip-on or snap-on to the at least one conventional lens; and

the magnet is configured to provide an electrical connection that delivers power for the at least one electronic lens.

7. The eyewear system of claim 1 , wherein the conventional lens is a prescription lens.

8. The eyewear system of claim 1 , wherein the conventional lens has no optical power.

9. The eyewear system of claim 1 , further comprising a power source contained with the external electronic device.

10. The eyewear system of claim 1 , wherein the eyewear assembly comprises a visor, spectacles, or goggles.

11. The eyewear system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic lens comprises a pixelated electro-active lens.

12. The eyewear system of claim 1 , wherein the virtual image is a 3D image.

13. The eye eyewear system of claim 1 , wherein the frame comprises a first hinged temple piece, wherein the first conductor is affixed to or travels through the first temple piece.

14. An eyewear system comprising:

an eyewear assembly comprising:

a frame to hold at least one conventional lens;

at least one electronic lens configured to present a virtual image that appears to a wearer of the eyewear assembly as if the virtual image is floating in space in front of the wearer;

an electronic cable coupled to the frame; and

a first conductor contained within the electronic cable and configured to deliver power for the electronic lens, wherein the power delivered by the first conductor affects one or more optical characteristics of the electronic lens; and

a first controller in an external electronic device connected to the at least one electronic lens via the electronic cable and configured to adjust the one or more optical characteristics of the at least one electronic lens;

wherein the at least one electronic lens is detachably coupled to the frame or to the at least one conventional lens, via at least one of a visor or a snap-on or a clip-on.

15. The eyewear system of claim 14 , further comprising at least one conventional lens.

16. The eyewear system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one electronic lens is detachably coupled to the at least one conventional lens via a visor.

17. The eyewear system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one electronic lens is detachably coupled to the at least one conventional lens via a snap-on or a clip-on.

18. The eyewear system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one electronic lens is detachably coupled to the frame via a visor.

19. The eyewear system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one electronic lens is detachably coupled to the frame via a snap-on or a clip-on.

20. The eyewear system of claim 14 , wherein:

the clip-on or snap-on is configured to provide an electrical connection that delivers power for the at least one electronic lens;

the clip-on or snap-on comprises a magnet that is configured to magnetically attach the clip-on or snap-on to the at least one conventional lens; and

the magnet is configured to provide an electrical connection that delivers power for the at least one electronic lens.

21. An eyewear system comprising:

an eyewear assembly comprising:

a frame;

at least one conventional lens held by the frame;

at least one electronic lens configured to present a virtual image that appears to a wearer of the eyewear assembly as if the virtual image is floating in space in front of the wearer;

a first conductor that electrically delivers power for the electronic lens, wherein the power delivered by the first conductor affects one or more optical characteristics of the electronic lens; and

a first controller configured to adjust the one or more optical characteristics of the at least one electronic lens;

wherein the at least one electronic lens is contained inside the conventional lens.

22. The eyewear system of claim 1 , wherein the eyewear assembly further comprises at least one camera coupled to the frame.

23. The eyewear system of claim 1 , wherein the eyewear assembly further comprises at least one speaker coupled to the frame.

24. The eyewear system of claim 1 , wherein the eyewear assembly further comprises a microphone coupled to the frame.
