Abstract

The present disclosure relates generally to computer architecture and infrastructure for guest operating systems executing on a host operating system. According to one embodiment, a method of allowing root file access includes receiving a request from a guest operating system to have root file access in a host operating system; determining, by the host operating system, if the request is asking for information relevant to the guest operating system itself, and if the request is asking for information that has the same credentials as the request; and if the information is relevant to the guest operating system itself and the information has the same credentials as the request, then providing a secure path to the relevant root file system on the host operating system.

Claims (30)

1 . A method of allowing root file access, the method comprising:

receiving a request from a guest operating system to have root file access in a host operating system;

determining, by the host operating system, if the request is asking for information relevant to the guest operating system itself, and if the request is asking for information that has the same credentials as the request; and

if the information is relevant to the guest operating system itself and the information has the same credentials as the request, then providing a secure path to the relevant root file system on the host operating system.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving a request includes receiving a request through a secure tunnel between the guest operating system and the host operating system.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the secure tunnel is an encrypted communication path between the guest operating system and the host operating system.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the secure tunnel includes file access.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein receiving a request includes receiving a request through the file access of the secure tunnel.

6 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the file access includes a directory that includes a sub directory of the root file access on the host operating system.

7 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the secure tunnel has loop back networking.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising preventing access to other local or virtualized storage in the host operating system.

9 . A computer program product for allowing root file access, comprising:

a non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising a set of instructions that when executed by a programmable computing device causes the computing device to implement a method for configuring a set of network devices, the method comprising:

receiving a request from a guest operating system to have root file access in a host operating system;

determining, by the host operating system, if the request is asking for information relevant to the guest operating system itself, and if the request is asking for information that has the same credentials as the request; and

if the information is relevant to the guest operating system itself and the information has the same credentials as the request, then providing a secure path to the relevant root file system on the host operating system.

10 . The computer program product of claim 9 , wherein receiving a request includes receiving a request through a secure tunnel between the guest operating system and the host operating system.

11 . The computer program product of claim 10 , wherein the secure tunnel is an encrypted communication path between the guest operating system and the host operating system.

12 . The computer program product of claim 11 , wherein the secure tunnel includes file access.

13 . The computer program product of claim 12 , wherein receiving a request includes receiving a request through the file access of the secure tunnel.

14 . The computer program product of claim 11 , wherein the file access includes a directory that includes a sub directory of the root file access on the host operating system.

15 . The computer program product of claim 11 , wherein the secure tunnel has loop back networking.

16 . The computer program product of claim 9 , further comprising preventing access to other local or virtualized storage in the host operating system.

17 . A method of allowing root file access, the method comprising:

receiving a request, via a secure tunnel, from a guest operating system to have root file access in a host operating system;

determining, by the host operating system, if the request is asking for information relevant to the guest operating system itself, and if the request is asking for information that has the same credentials as the request; and

if the information is relevant to the guest operating system itself and the information has the same credentials as the request, then providing a secure path to the relevant root file system on the host operating system.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the secure tunnel includes file access.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein receiving a request includes receiving a request through the file access of the secure tunnel.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the file access includes a directory that includes a sub directory of the root file access on the host operating system.
