Abstract

An apparatus for performing phlebotomy through a peripheral intravenous line. The apparatus includes an introducer and a catheter configured to advance the catheter through a peripheral intravenous line. A y-adapter with a port of larger diameter is configured to receive the catheter and place in fluid communication with the peripheral intravenous line. When advanced the catheter is configured to transport a bodily fluid (i.e. blood) to a volume outside of the body.

Claims (43)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a catheter;

an introducer coupleable to a peripheral intravenous line, the peripheral intravenous line being at least partially insertable into a vein of a patient; and

an actuator coupled to the catheter and movable along a fixed length of the introducer to move the catheter between a first position and a second position, the catheter in the first position being inside the introducer and outside the peripheral intravenous line, the catheter in the second position being outside the introducer and at least partially inside the peripheral intravenous line.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the introducer defines a slot, the actuator being movable within the slot along the fixed length of the introducer.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a distal end portion of the catheter includes at least one opening, the catheter in the second position being such that the at least one opening is distal to the peripheral intravenous line.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a proximal end portion of the catheter is coupleable to a fluid reservoir to allow transfer of a volume of bodily fluid from the patient, through the catheter, and to the fluid reservoir when the peripheral intravenous line is at least partially inserted into the vein of the patient and the catheter is in the second position.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a distal end portion of the introducer includes a lock that is coupleable to at least one of a first port or a second port of the peripheral intravenous line.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

an adapter coupleable between a distal end portion of the introducer and a port of the peripheral intravenous line.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the distal end portion of the introducer includes a lock that is coupleable to the adapter.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the catheter in the second position being such that the catheter extends through the adapter and the peripheral intravenous line to place a distal end of the catheter distal to the peripheral intravenous line when the adapter is coupled between the introducer and the peripheral intravenous line.

9. An apparatus, comprising:

a catheter;

an introducer having a lock that is coupleable to a port of a peripheral intravenous line, the peripheral intravenous line being at least partially insertable into a vein of a patient; and

an actuator coupled to the catheter and movable along a fixed length of the introducer to move the catheter between a first position and a second position, the catheter in the first position being inside the introducer and outside the peripheral intravenous line, the catheter in the second position being disposed within and extending past an end of the peripheral intravenous line.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the lock includes a seal, the catheter in the first position being proximal to the seal, at least a distal end portion of the catheter in the second position is distal to the seal.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein a distal end portion of the catheter includes at least one opening, the catheter in the second position being such that the at least one opening is distal to the peripheral intravenous line.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the lock includes a back-flow preventor.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the catheter in the first position is proximal to a lumen of the peripheral intravenous line defined between the port and a distal end of the peripheral intravenous line.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the catheter in the second position extends through the lumen.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the actuator moves the catheter from the first position to the second position through the lumen of the peripheral intravenous line without kinking.

16. An apparatus, comprising:

a catheter;

an introducer coupleable to an adapter such that the adapter is between the introducer and a peripheral intravenous line that is at least partially insertable into a vein of a patient; and

an actuator coupled to the catheter and movable along a fixed length of the introducer to move the catheter between a first position and a second position, the catheter in the first position being proximal to the adapter, a portion of the catheter in the second position being extendable through the adapter and the peripheral intravenous line such that a distal end portion of the catheter extends beyond the peripheral intravenous line.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the distal end portion of the catheter in the second position is disposed in the vein of the patient when the peripheral intravenous line is at least partially disposed therein.

18. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the introducer defines a slot, the actuator being movable within the slot along the fixed length of the introducer.

19. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the adapter includes a seal, the catheter in the first position being proximal to the seal, at least the distal end portion of the catheter in the second position being distal to the seal.

20. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the catheter in the first position is within the introducer and proximal to the adapter when the introducer is coupled thereto.

21. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the catheter in the second position being such that the catheter extends through the adapter and the peripheral intravenous line to place a distal end of the catheter distal to the peripheral intravenous line when the adapter is coupled between the introducer and the peripheral intravenous line.

22. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the adapter is coupleable to one of a first port or a second port of the peripheral intravenous line.

23. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the introducer is coupleable to one of a first port or a second port of the adapter.

24. An apparatus, comprising:

a catheter;

an introducer coupleable to an adapter, the adapter being connected to a port of a peripheral intravenous line that is at least partially insertable into a vein of a patient; and

an actuator coupled to the catheter and movable along a fixed length of the introducer to move the catheter between a first position and a second position, the catheter in the first position being proximal to the adapter, a portion of the catheter in the second position being extendable through the adapter and the peripheral intravenous line such that a distal end portion of the catheter is distal to a distal end of the peripheral intravenous line.

25. The apparatus of claim 24 , wherein the actuator is slidable along the fixed length of the introducer to move the catheter between the first position and the second position.

26. The apparatus of claim 24 , wherein a distal end portion of the catheter includes at least one opening, the catheter in the second position being such that the at least one opening is distal to the peripheral intravenous line.

27. The apparatus of claim 24 , wherein the catheter has a length sufficient to place the distal end portion of the catheter distal to the distal end of the peripheral intravenous line when the catheter is in the second position and the adapter is coupled between the introducer and the peripheral intravenous line.
