Abstract

Certain aspects pertain to a combination sensor comprising a set of physical sensors facing different directions proximate a structure, and configured to measure solar radiation in different directions. The combination sensor also comprises a virtual facade-aligned sensor configured to determine a combi-sensor value at a facade of the structure based on solar radiation readings from the set of physical sensors.

Claims (38)

1. An apparatus for controlling one or more components of a building, the apparatus comprising:

physical sensors configured to measure radiation external to the building at locations where the physical sensors are disposed, which locations are adjacent to or on the building; and

a virtual sensor that is (i) configured to determine a value of radiation external to the building by using the radiation measured by the physical sensors, which value of radiation determined by the virtual sensor is at an other location different from the locations of the physical sensors, and (ii) configured for utilization in controlling the one or more components of the building.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the virtual sensor is configured to determine the value of radiation by using an aggregation technique or an interpolation technique.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the virtual sensor is configured to determine the value of radiation by using an aggregation technique that comprises (i) taking the maximum value of the radiation measured by the physical sensors, or (ii) taking an average value of the radiation measured by the physical sensors.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the virtual sensor is configured to determine the value of radiation by using an interpolation technique that comprises interpolating readings from the physical sensors to a virtual sensor using vectoral calculation.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the other location is vertically different from the locations of the physical sensors.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the other location is horizontally different from the locations of the physical sensors.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more components of the building comprises one or more tintable windows.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more components comprise a fire system, an elevators system, a power system, a security system, a lighting system, a heating system, a ventilation system, an air conditioning system, or a heating ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC).

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more components comprise a building management system (BMS).

10. A method of controlling one or more components of a building, the method comprising:

using physical sensors to measure radiation external to the building at locations where the physical sensors are disposed, which locations are adjacent to or on the building;

using a virtual sensor to determine a value of radiation external to the building by using the radiation measured by the physical sensors, which value of radiation determined by the virtual sensor is at an other location different from the locations of the physical sensors; and

using the value of radiation determined by the virtual sensor to control the one or more components of the building.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein using the virtual sensor to determine the value of radiation at the other location is by using an aggregation technique or an interpolation technique.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more components of the building comprises one or more tintable windows.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more components comprise a fire system, an elevators system, a power system, a security system, a lighting system, a heating system, a ventilation system, an air conditioning system, or a heating ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC).

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more components comprise a building management system (BMS).

15. A non-transitory computer readable media for controlling one or more components of a building, the non-transitory computer readable media, when read by one or more processors, is configured to perform operations comprising:

direct physical sensors to measure radiation external to the building at locations where the physical sensors are disposed, which locations are adjacent to or on the building;

determine, or direct a virtual sensor to determine, a value of radiation external to the building by using the radiation measured by the physical sensors, which value of radiation determined is at an other location different from the locations of the physical sensors; and

use the value of radiation determined by the virtual sensor to control the one or more components of the building.

16. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the one or more processors is disposed external to the building.

17. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the one or more processors is disposed at the physical sensors.

18. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 15 , wherein the operations comprise determine, or direct the virtual sensor to determine, the value of radiation at the other location by using an aggregation technique or an interpolation technique.

19. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 15 , wherein the one or more components of the building comprises one or more tintable windows.

20. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 15 , wherein the one or more components comprise a fire system, an elevators system, a power system, a security system, a lighting system, a heating system, a ventilation system, an air conditioning system, or a heating ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC).

21. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 15 , wherein the one or more components comprise a building management system (BMS).

22. An apparatus for controlling one or more components of a building, the apparatus comprising at least one controller that is configured to:

operatively couple to (i) physical sensors configured to measure radiation external to the building at locations where the physical sensors are disposed, which locations are adjacent to or on the building, and (ii) the one or more components of the building;

direct the physical sensors to measure the radiation external to the building;

determine, or direct a virtual sensor to determine, a value of radiation external to the building by using the radiation measured by the physical sensors, which value of radiation determined is at an other location different from the locations of the physical sensors; and

use, or direct usage of, the value of radiation determined to control the one or more components of the building.

23. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the at least one controller is configured to determine, or direct the virtual sensor to determine, a value of radiation at the other location by using an aggregation technique or an interpolation technique.

24. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the one or more components of the building comprises one or more tintable windows.

25. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the one or more components comprise a fire system, an elevators system, a power system, a security system, a lighting system, a heating system, a ventilation system, an air conditioning system, or a heating ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC).

26. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the one or more components comprise a building management system (BMS).
