Abstract

Embodiments are directed to controlling an electronically-controlled appliance using a software application and providing a user interface for controlling an electronically-controlled appliance. In one scenario, a computer system receives an indication from a remote computing system indicating that an electronically-controlled appliance is communicably connected to the remote computing system. The computer system provides a notification in the software application indicating that the electronically-controlled appliance is available to receive instructions, and receives a user input at the software application indicating that certain functions are to be performed by the electronically-controlled appliance. The computer system further generates instructions configured to control the electronically-controlled appliance based on the functions specified in the received user input, and sends the generated instructions to the electronically-controlled appliance to perform the specified functions. These functions are then interpreted and carried out on the electronically-controlled appliance via the hardware controller.

Claims (30)

1. A cloud computing system for communicating with and controlling operation of a smoker comprising a hopper having an auger and for loading combustible pellets into a combustion area of the smoker, the cloud computing system comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions thereon that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the cloud computing system to: responsive to an authorization, establish direct network communication with the smoker;

receive, from a remote device, one or more instructions for controlling the operation of the smoker;

responsive to receiving the one or more instructions, determine a location of the remote device relative to the smoker;

responsive to determining that the location of the remote device is within a certain distance of the smoker, enable the one or more instructions to be transmitted to the smoker;

responsive to determining that the location of the remote device is outside of the certain distance of the smoker, either prevent the one or more instructions from being transmitted to the smoker or modify the one or more instructions prior to transmitting the one or more instructions to the smoker; and

transmit the one or more instructions to the smoker.

2. The cloud computing system of claim 1 , wherein the received one or more instructions comprise an instruction to ignite the smoker.

3. The cloud computing system of claim 1 , wherein determining a location of the remote device relative to the smoker comprises determining the location of the remote device based on a determined global positioning system (GPS) location of the remote device.

4. The cloud computing system of claim 1 , wherein determining a location of the remote device relative to the smoker comprises determining the location of the remote device based on a Bluetooth geo-fence.

5. The cloud computing system of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the cloud computing system to receive usage data from the smoker.

6. The cloud computing system of claim 5 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the cloud computing system to:

analyze the usage data received from the smoker; and

generate one or more smoker-related analytics for the smoker.

7. The cloud computing system of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the cloud computing system to transmit the one or more instructions to the smoker to cause the hopper and the auger to load additional pellets into the combustion area.

8. The cloud computing system of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the cloud computing system to perform remote diagnostics on the smoker.

9. The cloud computing system of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the cloud computing system to predict problems for one or more components of the smoker.

10. A method for controlling a smoker using a software application on a remote device, the smoker comprising at least one hardware controller and a hopper having an auger and for loading combustible pellets into a combustion area of the smoker, the method comprising:

receiving a request from the smoker for permission to establish network communication with one or more remote computing systems;

detecting a user interaction with the remote device, the user interaction granting permission for the smoker to establish network communication with the one or more remote computing systems;

transmitting a data packet to the smoker, the data packet authorizing the smoker to establish network communication with the one or more remote computing systems;

determining a plurality of locations of the remote device relative to the smoker;

in response to determining that the remote device is within a certain distance of the smoker based on a current location of the plurality of locations, directly transmitting one or more instructions to the smoker from a cloud computing system; and

in response to determining that the remote device is outside of the certain distance of the smoker based on the current location of the plurality of locations, preventing the one or more instructions from being transmitted to the smoker.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

detecting, at the remote device, the user interaction to initiate the software application on the remote device, the software application associated with the smoker; and

responsive to the detected user interaction, initiating the software application on the remote device.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more remote computing systems comprise a cloud computing platform.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more remote computing systems comprise one or more of a data analytics system, a third-party advertisement system, a remote diagnostic system, an eCommerce service, a social media network, or a customer service system.
