Abstract

A credit-substitution symbol mechanic for a gaming device is described. The credit-substitution symbol mechanic randomly triggers an add-substitution symbol feature and randomly determines a number of substitution symbols to add to a first reel to be displayed in a reel area. The credit-substitution symbol mechanic randomly determines a substitution symbol from the number of substitution symbols added to the first reel is a credit-substitution symbol and determines that the credit-substitution symbol is part of a payline. The credit-substitution symbol substitutes as a different symbol type when forming the payline. The credit-substitution symbol mechanic performs a first payout for the payline that pays out a payline award and performs a second payout for the payline that pays out a credit value of the credit-substitution symbol.

Claims (41)

1. A non-transitory computer-readable medium, readable by at least one processor and comprising instructions stored thereon to cause the at least one processor to:

cause a reel display area to be displayed on one or more displays;

randomly trigger, using a random number generator provided by the at least one processor, an add-substitution symbol feature;

randomly determine, based on the random number generator provided by the at least one processor and triggering of the add-substitution symbol feature, a first number of substitution symbols to add to symbol window positions of the reel display area that are associated with a first reel;

randomly determine, using the random number generator provided by the at least one processor, that a substitution symbol from the first number of substitution symbols added to the symbol window positions of the reel display area associated with the first reel is a credit-substitution symbol; determine that the credit-substitution symbol is part of a payline, wherein the credit-substitution symbol substitutes as a different symbol type when forming the payline;

determine a first outcome based on a value associated with the payline;

cause a first animation to be displayed on the one or more displays to present the first outcome;

determine a second outcome based on a value of the credit-substitution symbol responsive to the determination that the credit-substitution symbol is part of the payline; and

cause a second animation to be displayed on the one or more displays to present the second outcome.

2. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to:

randomly determine, using the random number generator, a first symbol window position for the credit-substitution symbol in the first reel; and

assign the credit-substitution symbol to the first symbol window position.

3. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 2 , wherein the symbol window position for the credit-substitution symbol is not already assigned a substitution symbol prior to assigning the credit-substitution symbol thereto.

4. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 2 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to:

generate, using the random number generator, a random-based game outcome, wherein a portion of the random-based game outcome is mapped to the first reel; and

replace a symbol mapped to the symbol window position based on the random-based game outcome with the credit-substitution symbol.

5. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 2 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to:

generate, using the random number generator, a random-based game outcome, wherein the random-based game outcome is mapped to the first reel and a plurality of other reels; and

combine a symbol attribute of a symbol mapped to the symbol window position based on the random-based game outcome with a symbol attribute of the credit-substitution symbol.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to randomly determine, using the random number generator and triggering of the add-substitution symbol feature, a second number of substitution symbols to add to the symbol window positions of the reel display area that are associated with a second reel.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to randomly determine, using the random number generator, one or more symbol window positions associated with the second reel to which to add the second number of substitution symbols.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the instructions further cause the random determination of the one or more symbol window positions associated with the second reel to which to add the second number of substitution symbols to be based on a separate random number generator pull than the determination of the first number of substitution symbols to add to the symbol window positions of the reel display area that are associated with the first reel.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein instructions further cause the first number to differ from the second number.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions to randomly determine that the substitution symbol from the first number of substitution symbols added to the symbol window positions of the reel display area that are associated with the first reel is the credit-substitution symbol include instructions that further cause the at least one processor to randomly select a first set of substitution volatility lookup tables from a plurality of sets of substitution volatility lookup tables and use the first set of substitution volatility lookup tables to randomly determine that the substitution symbol from the first number of substitution symbols added to the symbol window positions of the reel display area that are associated with the first reel is the credit-substitution symbol.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the first set of substitution volatility lookup tables includes a first substitution volatility lookup table for randomly determining whether substitution symbols added to symbol window positions of the reel display area that are associated with the first reel are credit-substitution symbols and a second substitution volatility lookup table for randomly determining whether substitution symbols added to symbol window positions of the reel display area that are associated with on a second reel are credit-substitution symbols.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to:

randomly determine, using the random number generator, that a re-spin feature is to be triggered;

randomly determine the substitution symbol from the number of substitution symbols added to the symbol positions of the reel display area that are associated with the first reel.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , where the first set of substitution volatility lookup tables is weighted to generate more credit-substitution symbols than a second set of substitution volatility lookup tables from the plurality of sets of substitution volatility lookup tables.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to:

determine that the add-substitution symbol feature produces a result that satisfies a re-spin triggering condition;

randomly determine, using the random number generator and satisfaction of the re-spin triggering condition, that an extra substitution symbol is to be added to the symbol window positions of the reel display area that are associated with the first reel in a re-spin feature; and

randomly determine, using the random number generator and the first set of substitution volatility lookup tables for the add-substitution symbol feature, that the extra substitution symbol added to the symbol window positions of the reel display that are associated with the first reel is a second credit-substitution symbol.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the result is based on a number of substitution symbols added to the symbol window positions of the reel display area that are associated with the first reel and a second reel.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the symbol window positions of the reel display area associated with the first reel correspond to a second column in the reel area and the symbol window positions of the reel display area associated with the second reel correspond to a third column in the reel area.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to hold the credit-substitution symbol when executing the re-spin feature.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to:

randomly determine, using the random number generator, to add an extra substitution symbol to the symbol window positions of the reel display area associated with the first reel; and

randomly determine, using the random number generator, that the extra substitution symbol added to the symbol window positions of the reel display area associated with the first reel is a second credit-substitution symbol.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions to randomly trigger, using the random number generator, the add-substitution symbol feature include instructions that cause the at least one processor to randomly trigger the add-substitution symbol feature separately and independently from a random-based game outcome.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions to randomly trigger, using the random number generator, the add-substitution symbol feature include instructions that cause the at least one processor to randomly trigger the add-substitution symbol feature from a random-based game outcome.
