Abstract

A hybrid flute for a stalk roll may be configured with a sharp edge positioned between a first blunt edge and a second blunt edge along a length of the flute edge. The flute edge may extend radially outward from a main cylinder of the stalk roll. The flute edge may be engaged with a radius at the base of the flute edge, and a flute base may extend from the radius. A plurality of flute bases positioned adjacent to one another may be configured to form a main cylinder for the stalk roll.

Claims (25)

1. A flute comprising:

a. a flute edge having a first blunt edge, a sharp edge, and a second blunt edge along a length of said flute;

b. a radius engaged with and extending from said flute edge in a direction angled with respect to said flute edge;

c. a flute base engaged with and extending from said radius; and

d. a base bevel at a first terminal end of said base, wherein said first terminal end is adjacent said second blunt edge of said flute edge.

2. The flute according to claim 1 wherein said flute base further comprises an aperture passing through said base.

3. A flute comprising:

a. a flute edge having a first blunt edge, a sharp edge, and a second blunt edge along a length of said flute;

b. a radius engaged with and extending from said flute edge in a direction angled with respect to said flute edge;

c. a flute base engaged with and extending from said radius; and

d. a notch formed in said flute base along a length of said flute base, wherein said notch reduces the distance between an edge of said flute base and said radius.

4. The flute according to claim 1 further comprising:

e. a trailing wall and a trailing surface that are integral and linear.

5. The flute according to claim 4 further comprising:

f. a leading wall and a leading surface;

wherein the leading surface and the trailing surface are substantially parallel with one another.

6. The flute according to claim 5 wherein the leading wall and the trailing wall extend beyond the flute base.

7. The flute according to claim 5 , wherein the angle between the leading and/or trailing walls of a flute and the corresponding flute base is greater than 90 degrees.

8. The flute according to claim 5 wherein the sharp flute edge is formed by angling the leading surface with respect to the leading wall between 2 and 65 degrees.

9. The flute according to claim 5 , wherein portions of the leading wall and the trailing wall are positioned over an exterior surface of a sleeve a nose cone of a stalk roll.

10. The flute according to claim 9 , wherein the second blunt edge extends along the length of the stalk roll from an area adjacent a fighting engaged with a portion of the nose cone backward to an area just past a start of another flute that is shorter than the flute.

11. The flute according to claim 1 , wherein the flute is formed from a flat, stock piece of iron.

12. The flute according to claim 2 , further comprising:

a notch formed in said flute base along a length of said flute base.

13. The flute according to claim 12 , wherein the flute base further comprises a retainer that passes through the aperture, wherein tightening the retainer causes an area between the notch and the flute base to constrict.
