Abstract

A selection system comprises a ring, a plurality of shims, a measurement device, and at least one glenoid component. The ring is configured to couple to a humerus. A shim of the plurality of shims is configured to couple to the ring. The measurement device is configured to couple to the shim. Each shim of the plurality of shims has a different height when coupled to the ring. The selection system generates measurement data to support the selection of at least one prosthetic component for a shoulder joint in a surgical environment. The shoulder joint geometry can be adjusted by changing shims, changing glenoid component or both. The selection system is removed after the selection of the final prosthetic components for the shoulder joint. The final prosthetic components are installed in the shoulder joint. The measurement device is placed in the shoulder joint and measurement data is generated to verify performance.

Claims (24)

1. A method, comprising:

performing a resection of a first bone of a shoulder joint of a patient to produce a resected surface;

coupling a coupling device directly to the resected surface,

wherein the coupling device is coupled to the resected surface using at least one of at least one nail or at least one screw;

coupling a prosthetic device to a second bone of the shoulder joint,

wherein the second bone is opposite the first bone;

coupling a measurement device directly to the coupling device,

wherein the measurement device includes an external surface that is configured to articulate with the prosthetic device;

moving the shoulder joint through a range of motion,

wherein the measurement device measures at least one force within the shoulder joint while the shoulder joint is moved through the range of motion; and

selecting at least one of (a) the prosthetic device that is coupled to the second bone of the shoulder joint or (b) a further prosthetic device configured to be coupled to the first bone of the shoulder joint based at least on the measured at least one force.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the coupling device comprises a ring.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein a bottom surface of the ring is co-planar to a bottom surface of the measurement device when the measurement device is coupled to the coupling device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the measurement device comprises a plurality of sensors located at radial positions relative to an external curved surface.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the prosthetic device is selected if the measured at least one force is above a predetermined threshold, and wherein the further prosthetic device is selected if the measured at least one force is below the predetermined threshold.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the prosthetic device is selected if the measured at least one force is below a predetermined threshold, and wherein the further prosthetic device is selected if the measured at least one force is above the predetermined threshold.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the prosthetic device is an on-lay humeral prosthetic component, and wherein the further prosthetic device is an in-lay humeral prosthetic component.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the predetermined threshold is 20 pounds.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first bone is a humerus.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of coupling the coupling device directly to the resected surface further comprises coupling the coupling device to the resected surface using a canal rod.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

removing the measuring device from the coupling device;

coupling a liner to the coupling device; and

placing the measuring device in the joint to record verification data.
