Abstract

The present disclosure describes methods and systems for a document server communicatively coupled to at least one client computing device, a document comprising an operation log, wherein the operation log comprises at least one first sequential operation defining operations to create data values of the document, a document object model, wherein the document is at least partially positioned on at least one of the document server and a first client computing device of the at least one client computing device, and a formula engine, wherein the formula engine is structured to determine a calculation definition in response to the user formula value and the document object model.

Claims (36)

1. A system, comprising:

a first computing device communicatively coupled to a second computing device; the first computing device comprising a document server structured to communicate a data element to the second computing device, the data element comprising at least a portion of

a document and an external source data;

a processor configured to execute a document object model, wherein the document object model comprises an object definition corresponding to each of a plurality of objects in the document;

the second computing device comprising:

a user display circuit structured to provide a document view in response to the data element;

a reference management circuit structured to interpret a user reference selection as a part of a user formula value, and to determine a reference return value in response to the user reference selection, wherein the reference return value comprises at least a portion of the external source data; and

wherein the user display circuit is further structured to determine at least one responsive information element in response to the reference return value, and to provide the at least one responsive information element in a reference return display, thereby making the at least one responsive information element visible in the document view; and

wherein the processor is further configured to execute a formula engine, wherein the formula engine is structured to determine a calculation definition in response to the user formula value and the document object model, wherein the calculation definition comprises requirements for operations of an executable model to implement the user formula value.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one responsive information element comprises a preview of one or more reference return values.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the user reference selection comprises an initiating character sequence comprising at least one character, and wherein the reference management circuit is further structured to update the preview in response to an incremental addition of a character to the user reference selection.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the preview comprises a chart preview comprising a chart depiction resulting from a selection of the reference return value.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one responsive information element comprises a list of a plurality of reference return values.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein members of the list comprise reference return values each corresponding to at least one of: the external source data; data in the document; data in another document accessible to the document server; data from an internet search based on the user reference selection; or data from an external application accessible to the document server.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the user reference selection comprises an initiating character sequence comprising at least one character, and wherein the reference management circuit is further structured to update the list in response to an incremental addition of a character to the user reference selection.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the reference return display comprises a card inserted at a location in the document corresponding to the user reference selection.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the reference return display comprises a chart determined in response to the at least one responsive information element.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the reference return display comprises a table determined in response to the at least one responsive information element.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the reference management circuit is further structured to utilize contextual information of a user providing the user reference selection to determine the reference return value.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the contextual information comprises at least one of: a location in the document where the user reference selection is positioned; a role of the user; a title of the user; a current time of day; or a current calendar date.

13. A method, comprising:

executing a document object model, wherein the document object model comprises an object definition corresponding to each of a plurality of objects in a document;

providing a document view in response to a data element, the data element comprising at least a portion of a document and an external source data;

interpreting a user reference selection as a part of a user formula value, and determining a

reference return value in response to the user reference selection, wherein the reference return value comprises at least a portion of the external data;

determine at least one responsive information element in response to the reference return value;

provide the at least one responsive information element in a reference return display, thereby making the at least one responsive information element visible in the document view; and

executing a formula engine to determine a calculation definition in response to the user formula value and the document object model, wherein the calculation definition comprises requirements for operations of an executable model to implement the user formula value.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein providing the at least one responsive element in the reference return display comprises providing a preview of one or more reference return values.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the user reference selection comprises an initiating character sequence comprising at least one character, the method further comprising updating the preview in response to an incremental addition of a character to the user reference selection.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the preview comprises a chart preview comprising a chart depiction resulting from a selection of the reference return value.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein providing the at least one responsive element in the reference return display comprises providing a list of a plurality of reference return values.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the user reference selection comprises an initiating character sequence comprising at least one character, the method further comprising updating the list in response to an incremental addition of a character to the user reference selection.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein providing the at least one responsive information element in the reference return display comprises inserting a card at a location in the document corresponding to the user reference selection.

20. The method of claim 13 , wherein providing the at least one responsive information element in the reference return display comprises inserting a chart determined in response to the at least one responsive information element.

21. The method of claim 13 , wherein providing the at least one responsive information element in the reference return display comprises inserting a table determined in response to the at least one responsive information element.
