Abstract

A viewing optics assembly comprising a spatial light modulator is configured to rotate the spatial light modulator.

(a) at least one waveguide;

(b) at least one in-coupling optical element configured to in-couple light from the spatial light modulator array into the at least one waveguide; and

(c) at least one out-coupling optical element configured to couple light guided within the waveguide out of the waveguide and direct the light to the eye of the user; and

optics having optical power, the optics disposed so as to receive light output from the light source, the optics arranged with respect to the spatial light modulator array such that the light received from the light source passes through the optics and illuminates the spatial light modulator array,

wherein the head mounted display system is configured such that light illuminating the spatial light modulator array is redirected back through the optics and is coupled into the at least one waveguide through the at least one in-coupling optical element and at least a portion of the coupled light is ejected from the at least one waveguide by the at least one out-coupling optical element and directed to the eye of the user; and

wherein said spatial light modulator array is configured to tilt to direct more light from said at least one light source to different of said at least one in-coupling optical elements at different times.

2. The head mounted display system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one waveguide comprises first and second waveguides having respective first and second in-coupling optical elements associated therewith.

3. The head mounted display system of claim 2 , wherein said spatial light modulator array is configured to tilt to direct more light from said at least one light source to said first in-coupling optical element when said spatial light modulator array is tilted at a first angle such that more of said light is coupled by said first in-coupling optical element into said first waveguide than by said second in-coupling optical element into said second waveguide.

4. The head mounted display system of claim 3 , wherein said spatial light modulator array is configured to tilt to direct more light from said at least one light source into said second in-coupling optical element when said spatial light modulator array is tilted at a second angle such that more of said light is coupled by said second in-coupling optical element into said second waveguide than by said first in-coupling optical element into said first waveguide.

5. The head mounted display system of claim 2 , wherein the first and second waveguides are configured to output light with wavefronts having different amounts of at least one of divergence, convergence, or collimation as if projected from different distances from the user's eye.

6. The head mounted display system of claim 5 , wherein the first and second waveguides are configured such that light out-coupled from the first waveguide is collimated and light output from the second waveguide diverges.

7. The head mounted display system of claim 5 , wherein the first and second waveguides are configured such that light out-coupled from the first waveguide diverges a first amount and light out-coupled from the second waveguide diverges a second amount, where the second amount is different from the first amount.

8. The head mounted display system of claim 2 , wherein the first and second waveguides are configured to output light into different angular fields to provide an overall larger field-of-view for image content presented to the user.

9. The head mounted display system of claim 2 , wherein the first and second waveguides have corresponding first and second out-coupling optical elements that are laterally offset with respect to each other so as to provide an increased eye box for the user to view images.

10. The head mounted display system of claim 1 , further comprising a rotation stage on which said spatial light modulator array is disposed, said rotation stage having at least one actuator configured to receive a signal and tilt said rotation stage in response to said received signal.

11. The head mounted display system of claim 10 , wherein said spatial light modulator array comprises a spatial modulator array that is configured to switch between two states, a first state and a second state, wherein the orientation of the spatial light modulator array is disposed at first and second angles, respectively, in said first and second states.
