Abstract

A mask system for delivery of respiratory therapy to a patient includes a nares portion and a mouth portion and an inlet conduit connected to at least one of the nares portion and the mouth portion to deliver the pressurized, breathable gas. The mask system is adapted to selectively utilize the nares portion and/or the mouth portion in a first mode utilizing both the nares portion and the mouth portion, and in a second mode utilizing the nares portion and not utilizing the mouth portion.

Claims (79)

1. A mask system for delivery of respiratory therapy to a patient, comprising:

a mask shaped to seal with a face of the patient entirely below a nasal bridge of the patient, the mask defining (i) a front portion oriented outwardly away from the face of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, and (ii) a nasal aperture to deliver pressurized air to a nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the mask including:

a flexible membrane that is shaped to seal with an underside of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient and that includes a nose tip engagement portion to contact a tip of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient; and

a covering flap spaced apart from the nasal aperture and extending upwardly from the front portion of the mask to at least partially cover the tip of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient; and

headgear structured to maintain the mask in position on the face of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the headgear including:

a first side headgear portion attachable to the mask at a first side of the mask so that the first side headgear portion extends between a first eye of the patient and a first ear of the patient on a first side of a head of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient; and

a second side headgear portion attachable to the mask at a second side of the mask so that the second side headgear portion extends between a second eye of the patient and a second ear of the patient on a second side of the head of the patient opposite from the first side of the head of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient.

2. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein:

the flexible membrane surrounds the nasal aperture; and

the flexible membrane and the covering flap extend in directions away from a same portion of the front portion of the mask.

3. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the nose tip engagement portion of the flexible membrane is separated from the covering flap by an air gap.

4. The mask system of claim 3 , wherein the nose tip engagement portion of the flexible membrane flexes toward the covering flap when the mask is worn by the patient and the nose tip engagement portion contacts the nose.

5. The mask system of claim 4 , wherein the covering flap mechanically stabilizes the flexible membrane when the mask is worn by the patient.

6. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the nasal aperture is shaped to contemporaneously provide pressured air to both nares of the patient.

7. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein:

the covering flap extends upwardly from the front portion of the mask to a free edge of the covering flap; and

the nose tip engagement portion is separated from the free edge of the covering flap by an air gap external to the mask.

8. The mask system of claim 7 , wherein the mask is shaped such that the tip of the nose of the patient is positioned below the free edge of the covering flap when the mask is worn by the patient and viewed from in front of the patient.

9. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein:

the mask defines a mouth aperture to provide pressurized air to a mouth of the patient; and

the mask includes a chin-contacting portion to seal below the mouth of the patient at a front of a chin of the patient.

10. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein:

the covering flap extends upwardly from the front portion of the mask to a free edge of the covering flap; and

the free edge of the covering flap is located above all other portions of the mask when the mask is worn by the patient and viewed from in front of the patient.

11. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein:

the mask includes a supporting wall that surrounds an interior of the mask;

the flexible membrane extends from the supporting wall toward a free edge of the flexible membrane; and

the supporting wall that surrounds the interior of the mask connects to the front portion of the mask.

12. The mask system of claim 11 , wherein:

the mask includes a second flexible membrane that extends from the supporting wall below the flexible membrane, such that an air gap exists between the free edge of the flexible membrane and a free edge of the second flexible membrane; and

the free edge of the second flexible membrane is separated from the covering flap by an air gap.

13. A mask system for delivery of respiratory therapy to a patient, comprising:

a mask shaped to seal with a face of the patient entirely below a nasal bridge of the patient and through contact with a front of a chin of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the mask defining (i) a front portion oriented outwardly away from the face of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, (ii) a nasal aperture to deliver pressurized air to a nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, and (iii) a mouth aperture to provide pressurized air to a mouth of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the mask including:

a flexible membrane shaped to seal with an underside of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the flexible membrane including a nose tip engagement portion to contact a tip of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, a portion of the flexible membrane being positioned between the mouth aperture and the nasal aperture; and

a covering flap spaced apart from the nasal aperture and extending upwardly from the front portion of the mask to a free edge of the covering flap to at least partially cover the tip of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the covering flap being separated from the nose tip engagement portion of the flexible membrane by an air gap, wherein the nose tip engagement portion of the flexible membrane flexes toward the covering flap when the mask is worn by the patient and the nose tip engagement portion contacts the nose, the mask being shaped such that the tip of the nose of the patient is positioned below the free edge of the covering flap when the mask is worn by the patient and viewed from in front of the patient; and

headgear structured to maintain the mask in position on the face of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the headgear including:

a first side headgear portion attachable to the mask at a first side of the mask so that the first side headgear portion extends between a first eye of the patient and a first ear of the patient on a first side of a head of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient; and

a second side headgear portion attachable to the mask at a second side of the mask so that the second side headgear portion extends between a second eye of the patient and a second ear of the patient on a second side of the head of the patient opposite from the first side of the head of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient.

14. A mask system for delivery of respiratory therapy to a patient, comprising:

a mask shaped to seal with a face of the patient entirely below a nasal bridge of the patient, the mask defining (i) a front portion that is oriented outwardly away from the face of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient and that comprises a rigid frame, and (ii) a nasal aperture to deliver pressurized air to a nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the mask including:

a flexible membrane shaped to seal with an underside of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the flexible membrane surrounding the nasal aperture and being formed of a first material that is more flexible than a second material from which the rigid frame is formed; and

a covering flap spaced apart from the nasal aperture and extending upwardly from the front portion of the mask to at least partially cover a tip of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the covering flap being integrally formed with the rigid frame as a unitary structure of the second material; and

headgear structured to maintain the mask in position on the face of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the headgear including:

a first side headgear portion attachable to the mask at a first side of the mask so that the first side headgear portion extends between a first eye of the patient and a first ear of the patient on a first side of a head of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient; and

a second side headgear portion attachable to the mask at a second side of the mask so that the second side headgear portion extends between a second eye of the patient and a second ear of the patient on a second side of the head of the patient opposite from the first side of the head of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient.

15. The mask system of claim 14 , wherein:

the rigid frame and the covering flap are integrally formed from polycarbonate material; and

the flexible membrane is formed from silicone material.

16. A mask system for delivery of respiratory therapy to a patient, comprising:

a mask shaped to seal with a face of the patient entirely below a nasal bridge of the patient, the mask defining (i) a front portion that is oriented outwardly away from the face of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient and that comprises a rigid frame, (ii) a nasal aperture to deliver pressurized air to a nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, and (iii) a mouth aperture to provide pressurized air to a mouth of the patient, the mask including:

a flexible membrane shaped to seal with an underside of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the flexible membrane surrounding the nasal aperture and a portion of the flexible membrane being positioned between the mouth aperture and the nasal aperture, the flexible membrane being formed of a first material that is more flexible than a second material from which the rigid frame is formed; and

a covering flap spaced apart from the nasal aperture and extending upwardly from the front portion of the mask to at least partially cover a tip of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient; and

headgear structured to maintain the mask in position on the face of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the headgear including:

a first side headgear portion attachable to the mask at a first side of the mask so that the first side headgear portion extends between a first eye of the patient and a first ear of the patient on a first side of a head of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient; and

a second side headgear portion attachable to the mask at a second side of the mask so that the second side headgear portion extends between a second eye of the patient and a second ear of the patient on a second side of the head of the patient opposite from the first side of the head of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient.

17. The mask system of claim 16 , wherein the rigid frame includes a clear window portion to allow visibility of the mouth of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient and viewed from in front of the patient.

18. The mask system of claim 16 , wherein the mask is shaped to seal the mouth of the patient through contact with a front of a chin of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient.

19. The mask system of claim 18 , wherein the mask includes a second flexible membrane to seal the mouth of the patient through contact with the front of the chin of the patient and an upper lip region of the patient.

20. A mask system for delivery of respiratory therapy to a patient, comprising:

a mask shaped to seal with a face of the patient entirely below a nasal bridge of the patient, the mask defining (i) a front portion that is oriented outwardly away from the face of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient and that includes an inwardly-facing wall that extends inwardly towards the face of the patient when the patient is wearing the mask, and (ii) a nasal aperture to deliver pressurized air to a nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the mask including:

a flexible membrane shaped to seal with an underside of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, wherein the flexible membrane surrounds the nasal aperture, the flexible membrane being coupled to the inwardly-facing wall and being formed of a material that is different from the inwardly-facing wall; and

a covering flap spaced apart from the nasal aperture and extending upwardly from the front portion of the mask to at least partially cover a tip of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, wherein the inwardly-facing wall is located below the covering flap and above a conduit aperture at which the mask is to receive an air-delivery conduit; and

headgear structured to maintain the mask in position on the face of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the headgear including:

a first side headgear portion attachable to the mask at a first side of the mask so that the first side headgear portion extends between a first eye of the patient and a first ear of the patient on a first side of a head of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient; and

a second side headgear portion attachable to the mask at a second side of the mask so that the second side headgear portion extends between a second eye of the patient and a second ear of the patient on a second side of the head of the patient opposite from the first side of the head of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient.

21. A mask system for delivery of respiratory therapy to a patient, comprising:

a mask shaped to seal with a face of the patient entirely below a nasal bridge of the patient, the mask defining (i) a front portion oriented outwardly away from the face of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, and (ii) a nasal aperture to deliver pressurized air to a nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the mask including:

a flexible membrane shaped to seal with an underside of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient;

a covering flap spaced apart from the nasal aperture and extending upwardly from the front portion of the mask to at least partially cover a tip of the nose of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient;

means for sealing with a mouth of the patient; and

means for connecting the front portion of the mask to the flexible membrane; and

headgear structured to maintain the mask in position on the face of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient, the headgear including:

a first side headgear portion attachable to the mask at a first side of the mask so that the first side headgear portion extends between a first eye of the patient and a first ear of the patient on a first side of a head of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient; and

a second side headgear portion attachable to the mask at a second side of the mask so that the second side headgear portion extends between a second eye of the patient and a second ear of the patient on a second side of the head of the patient opposite from the first side of the head of the patient when the mask is worn by the patient.

22. The mask system of claim 21 , wherein the flexible membrane seals with an upper lip region of the face of the patient.

23. The mask system of claim 21 , wherein:

the mask includes means for connecting with an air delivery conduit;

the headgear includes means for surrounding a back of the head of the patient; and

the mask includes means for connecting a nares seal portion of the mask to a mouth seal portion of the mask.
