Abstract

A method for removing hydrogen sulfide from a hydrocarbon. The method comprises introducing methylmorpholine-N-oxide to a vessel, wherein the vessel comprises the hydrocarbon, and wherein the hydrocarbon comprises hydrogen sulfide; and treating the hydrocarbon by allowing the methylmorpholine-N-oxide to react with the hydrogen sulfide.

Claims (13)

1. A method for removing hydrogen sulfide from a hydrocarbon, comprising:

(A) introducing methylmorpholine-N-oxide into a vessel, wherein the vessel comprises a hydrocarbon, wherein the hydrocarbon comprises a hydrocarbon liquid layer and a hydrocarbon gas layer, wherein the hydrocarbon liquid layer or the hydrocarbon liquid layer and the hydrocarbon gas layer comprise hydrogen sulfide, and further wherein the methylmorpholine-N-oxide is introduced into the hydrocarbon gas layer;

(B) introducing steam into the hydrocarbon liquid layer to allow at least a portion of the hydrogen sulfide in the hydrocarbon liquid layer to evaporate into the hydrocarbon gas layer; and

(C) treating the hydrocarbon gas layer by allowing the methylmorpholine-N-oxide to react with the hydrogen sulfide, wherein treating the hydrocarbon gas layer comprises converting the hydrogen sulfide to elemental sulfur.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising (D) removing at least a portion of the elemental sulfur from the hydrocarbon gas layer.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the methylmorpholine-N-oxide is added to steam before introduction into the vessel.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the methylmorpholine-N-oxide and steam mixture is introduced into the hydrocarbon gas layer at a rate between about 30 gallons per hour and about 300 gallons per hour.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the temperature of the hydrocarbon gas layer is above 234° F.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the methylmorpholine-N-oxide is introduced into the hydrocarbon gas layer such that its concentration is between about 0.01 weight volume percent and about 60 weight volume percent.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the steam introduced into the hydrocarbon liquid layer increases the temperature of the hydrocarbon liquid layer from about 70° F. to about 250° F.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein iron oxide is disposed in the vessel as a catalyst for the reaction between the methylmorpholine-N-oxide and the hydrogen sulfide.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reaction between the methylmorpholine-N-oxide and the hydrogen sulfide occurs from about one hour to about fifty hours.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the steam comprises 150 psig steam or less.
