Electrically powered surgical instrument with manual release
A surgical device comprising a surgical end effector, an actuation assembly having a part operable to move between a first position and a second position, an electrically-powered motor, a transmission mechanically connecting the motor to the part and being operable to selectively displace the part between the first and second positions when the motor is operated, and a manual release mechanically coupled to the transmission to selectively interrupt the transmission and, during interruption, displace the part towards the first position independent of operation of the motor.
1. A surgical device, comprising:
a surgical end effector;
an actuation assembly having a part operable to move between:
a first position; and
a second position;
an electrically-powered motor;
a transmission mechanically connecting the motor to the part and being operable to selectively displace the part between the first and second positions when the motor is operated; and
a manual release mechanically coupled to the transmission to selectively interrupt the transmission and, during interruption, displace the part towards the first position independent of operation of the motor.
2. The surgical device according to claim 1 , wherein the transmission is operable to selectively displace the part to any point between the first position and the second position when the motor is operated.
3. The surgical device according to claim 1 , further comprising a controller electrically connected to the motor and selectively operating the motor.
4. The surgical device according to claim 1 , wherein the surgical end effector is a stapling end effector.
5. The surgical device according to claim 1 , wherein the manual release is mechanically disposed in the transmission.
6. A surgical device, comprising:
a surgical end effector;
an actuation assembly having a part operable to move between:
a starting position; and
an actuated position in which the part actuates the surgical end effector;
an electrically-powered motor;
a transmission mechanically connecting the motor to the part and being operable to selectively displace the part between the starting and actuated positions when the motor is operated; and
a manual release mechanically coupled to the transmission to selectively interrupt the transmission and, during interruption, displace the part towards the starting position independent of operation of the motor.
7. The surgical device according to claim 6 , wherein the transmission is operable to selectively displace the part to any point between the starting position and the actuated position when the motor is operated.
8. The surgical device according to claim 6 , further comprising a controller electrically connected to the motor and selectively operating the motor.
9. The surgical device according to claim 6 , wherein the surgical end effector is a stapling end effector.
10. The surgical device according to claim 6 , wherein the manual release is mechanically disposed in the transmission.
11. A method for operating a surgical instrument, which comprises:
mechanically coupling a manual release to a transmission of the surgical instrument, the surgical instrument having a surgical end effector and an actuation assembly, wherein:
the transmission translates movement of an electrically-powered motor of the device to movement of a part of the actuation assembly; and
the part is operable to move between a first position and a second position; and
selectively interrupting the transmission with the manual release to move the part towards the first position independent of operation of the motor.
12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein:
the first position is a starting position; and
the second position is an actuated position in which the part actuates the surgical end effector.
13. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the transmission is operable to selectively displace the part to any point between the first position and the second position when the motor is operated.
14. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the surgical instrument further comprises a controller electrically connected to the motor and selectively operating the motor.
15. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the surgical end effector is a stapling end effector.
