Abstract

A cam for applying movement to a lens system. The cam may include a body configured to couple to the lens system. The body may have slots that are configured to receive lens followers. The slots may extend in directions that are convergent relative to each other.

Claims (24)

1. A cam for moving for moving lenses in a lens system, the cam comprising a body configured to couple with a camera lens system housing, the body having a first slot and a second slot operatively coupled to a respective first and second lens, wherein the cam body is configured to move axially along the optical axis of the camera lens system, and wherein such axial movement causes the first and second lens to each rotate.

2. The cam of claim 1 , wherein the first slot and the second slot are symmetrical about a line of symmetry.

3. The cam of claim 2 , wherein the body has an axial dimension and the line of symmetry extends along the axial dimension.

4. The cam of claim 3 , wherein the first slot and the second slot extend in directions that are convergent upon the line of symmetry.

5. The cam of claim 1 , wherein the first slot has a first end portion and a second end portion, and the second slot has a first end portion and a second end portion, and the first slot and the second slot each extend from the respective first end portions to the second end portions in directions that are convergent relative to each other.

6. The cam of claim 5 , wherein the second end portion of the first slot is closer to the second end portion of the second slot than the first end portion of the first slot is from the first end portion of the second slot.

7. The cam of claim 5 , wherein the body has an axial dimension and taken along the axial dimension the first slot and the second slot each extend from the respective first end portions to the second end portions in directions that are convergent relative to each other.

8. The cam of claim 1 , wherein the body has an axial dimension and a lateral dimension, and the first slot extends at an angle of less than about 30 degrees from the lateral dimension.

9. The cam of claim 1 , wherein the first slot includes a first working cam surface and a second working cam surface facing opposite the first working cam surface.

10. The cam of claim 1 , wherein the first slot comprises an aperture of the body or a groove in the body.

11. The cam of claim 1 , wherein the body has an axial dimension and taken along the axial dimension a distance between the first slot and the second slot decreases.

12. A camera lens system comprising:

a first lens;

a second lens; and

a cam comprising a body coupled to the camera lens system, the cam body including a first slot and a second slot, the first slot comprising a lens follower disposed therein and coupled to the first lens, the second slot comprising a lens follower disposed therein and coupled to the second lens, wherein the cam body is configured to move axially along an optical axis of the lens system, and wherein such axial movement of the cam body causes the first lens and the second lens to rotate.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the first lens is a cylindrical lens and the second lens is a cylindrical lens.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the first slot and the second slot extend in directions that are convergent relative to each other.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the first slot and the second slot extend in directions that are non-parallel relative to each other.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the first and second slots each include a first working cam surface and a second working cam surface facing opposite the first working cam surface, wherein the first working cam surface and the second working cam surface of the first and second slots operate apply a force to the respective first and second lens followers to cause the first and second lens followers to move relative to the respective first and second slots during back and forth axial movement of the cam body.

17. A method for moving lenses of a camera lens system comprising:

moving a cam body axially along an optical axis of the lens system, wherein such axial movement causes a first lens to rotate in one direction and a second lens to rotate in a direction opposite the first lens by coupled engagement of the first and second lens with respective first second slots of the cam body.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein during the step of providing, the cam body is moved axially along a housing of the lens system.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein the lens system is an anamorphic lens system.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first slot and the second slot extend in directions that are convergent relative to each other.
