Abstract

A method and system of conferencing can include the steps of initiating a conference call at a communication device with two or more communication devices and selecting to suppress a voice communication of at least one communication device on the conference call where a modified electronic signal is generated with the selected at least one communication device so that the voice communication from the selected at least one communication device is inaudible. The method or system further includes sending the modified electronic signal to at least one other communication device on the conference call. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Claims (51)

1. A method for acoustic management control suitable for use in an earpiece, the method comprising the steps of:

measuring an ambient acoustic signal from at least one Ambient Sound Microphone (ASM) to produce an electronic ambient signal;

measuring an internal sound from at least one Ear Canal Microphone (ECM) to produce an electronic internal signal;

generating a background noise level (BNL) from at least one of the electronic ambient signal or the electronic internal signal or a combination of both;

generating a voice activity level (VAL);

generating a gain, wherein the gain is a function of the background noise level and the voice activity level;

generating a modified electronic ambient signal by applying the gain to the electronic ambient signal;

mixing the modified electronic ambient signal with an audio signal to produce a mixed audio signal; and

sending the mixed audio signal to a speaker.

2. The method according to claim 1 further including the step of:

selecting an amount of the ambient sound to pass through into an ear canal, where the amount is user selected.

3. The method according to claim 2 , where a user selects the amount using a software application on a device.

4. The method according to claim 3 , where the device is at least one of a phone, a watch or a computer.

5. The method according to claim 4 , where the user selects the amount using a slider in a GUI of the software application.

6. The method according to claim 2 , where a user selects the amount by touching a portion of a communication device.

7. The method according to claim 2 , where a user selects the amount by vocalizing a voice command to enter an ambient or transparency mode.

8. A communication device, comprising:

a memory that stores instructions; and

a processor configured to execute the instructions to perform operations, the operations comprising:

capturing an ambient acoustic signal from at least one Ambient Sound Microphone (ASM) to produce an electronic ambient signal;

capturing an internal sound signal from at least one Ear Canal Microphone (ECM) to produce an electronic internal signal;

measuring a background noise signal from at least one of the electronic ambient signal or the electronic internal signal or both;

generating a background noise level (BNL) from the background noise signal;

generating a voice activity level using the internal sound signal;

generating a gain, wherein the gain is a function of the background noise level and the voice activity level;

generating a modified electronic ambient signal by applying the gain to the electronic ambient signal;

mixing the modified electronic ambient signal with an audio signal at a user selected ratio to produce a mixed audio signal; and

sending the mixed audio signal to a speaker.

9. The device according to claim 8 , where the operation further comprises:

selecting the ratio by user interaction with a software application on a second device.

10. The device according to claim 9 , where the second device is at least one of a phone, a watch or a computer.

11. The method according to claim 9 , where the user selects the ratio using a slider in a GUI of the software application.

12. The device according to claim 8 , where the user selects a ratio by touching a portion of the communication device.

13. The device according to claim 8 , where the user selects the ratio by vocalizing a voice command to enter an ambient or transparency mode.

14. An earphone comprising:

a sealing section configured to form an acoustic seal when the earphone is used;

an ambient sound microphone (ASM) that produces an electronic ambient signal;

an ear canal microphone (ECM) that produces an electronic internal signal;

a memory that stores instructions; and

a processor configured to execute the instructions to perform operations, the operations comprising:

receiving the electronic ambient signal;

receiving the electronic internal signal;

calculating a background noise signal from the electronic ambient signal or the electronic internal signal or a combination of both;

receiving an audio signal;

generating a noise reduction signal;

determining if the earphone is acoustically sealed;

producing an adjusted audio signal using the noise reduction signal;

receiving a mixing level;

generating a mixed audio signal by mixing the adjusted audio signal with the electronic ambient signal using the mixing level; and

sending the mixed audio signal to a speaker.

15. The earphone according to claim 14 , where the mixing level is set by a user from a low level of mixing to a high level of mixing, where a low level of mixing is where less than half of the ambient signal by amplitude is mixed with the adjusted audio signal, and where a high level of mixing is where more than half of the ambient signal by amplitude is mixed with the adjusted audio signal.
