Abstract

Methods of powering a radio that is mounted on a tower of a cellular base station are provided in which a direct current (“DC”) power signal is provided to the radio over a power cable and a voltage level of the output of the power supply is adjusted so as to provide a substantially constant voltage at a first end of the power cable that is remote from the power supply. Related cellular base stations and programmable power supplies are also provided.

Claims (20)

1. A programmable power supply configured to provide direct current (DC) power to a radio through power conductors having first ends and second ends which are opposite, the programmable power supply comprising:

a first input configured to receive a first DC power signal having a first voltage level;

an output configured to supply a second DC power signal having a second voltage level, configured to be coupled to the first ends of the power conductors, and configured to provide a direct current which flows from the first ends to the second ends;

a current sensor coupled to the output and configured to measure a current of the second DC power signal at the output;

control logic circuitry configured to receive an input parameter relating to power delivery; and

a DC-to-DC converter that converts the first DC power signal having the first voltage level to the second DC power signal having the second voltage level based on the current measured by the current sensor and based on the input parameter;

wherein the programmable power supply is configured to adjust the second voltage level in response to changes in the measured current and to provide a voltage, of the second DC power signal at the second ends of the power conductors, that (a) exceeds a nominal DC input voltage rating, of the radio and (b) is less than a maximum DC input voltage level rating of the radio.

2. The programmable power supply according to claim 1 , wherein the input parameter is a voltage.

3. The programmable power supply according to claim 1 , wherein the input parameter is a resistance of the power conductors.

4. The programmable power supply according to claim 2 , wherein the programmable power supply is configured to calculate a resistance of the power conductors based on the voltage and the measured current.

5. The programmable power supply according to claim 4 , wherein the control logic circuitry is further configured to calculate the resistance.

6. The programmable power supply according to claim 1 , wherein the programmable power supply is further configured to adjust the second voltage level in response to changes in the input parameter.

7. The programmable power supply according to claim 1 , wherein the programmable power supply is further configured to adjust the second voltage level so as to maintain the second voltage level within a predetermined range.

8. The programmable power supply according to claim 1 , wherein the control logic circuitry is configured to receive the input parameter from a user.

9. The programmable power supply according to claim 1 , wherein the control logic circuitry is configured to receive the input parameter derived from a measurement.

10. The programmable power supply according to claim 1 , wherein each of the power conductors is part of a single power cable for connecting the programmable power supply to the radio.

11. The programmable power supply according to claim 10 , wherein the voltage, of the second DC power signal at the second ends of the power conductors, is also within four volts of the maximum DC input voltage level rating of the radio.

12. The programmable power supply according claim 1 , wherein each of the power conductors includes at least two electrically connected conductive elements.

13. The programmable power supply according claim 12 , wherein each of the at least two electrically connected conductive elements is a power cable.

14. The programmable power supply according to claim 1 , wherein a magnitude of the nominal DC input voltage rating of the radio is 48V.
