Abstract

A portable computer that is configurable between a plurality of display modes including a laptop mode (in which the portable computer has a conventional laptop appearance) and an easel mode in which the base of the computer and its display component stand vertically forming an inverted “V.” The portable computer includes a hinge assembly that couples the display component to the base of the computer, and allows the display component to be rotated about an axis along an interface between the display component and the base to configure the portable computer between a closed position, the laptop mode and the easel mode.

Claims (46)

1. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions encoded thereon that, when executed by at least one processor of a portable computer comprising a display component comprising a display screen, a keyboard, and an orientation sensor, cause the at least one processor to perform a method, the method comprising:

receiving, from the orientation sensor, a first detection result indicating that the portable computer has transitioned from a first orientation, in which the display component is disposed at an angle between 0 degrees and 180 degrees with respect to the keyboard about a first axis that is parallel to one of a height dimension and a length dimension of the display screen, to a second orientation, in which the display component is disposed at an angle between 180 degrees and 320 degrees with respect to the keyboard about the first axis;

rotating a visual display on the display screen by 180 degrees responsive to receiving the first detection result from the orientation sensor, wherein rotating the visual display on the display screen responsive to receiving the first detection result further comprises enlarging content in the visual display on the display screen;

receiving, from the orientation sensor, a second detection result indicating that the portable computer has transitioned from the second orientation to a third orientation, in which the display component is disposed at an angle between 180 degrees and 320 degrees with respect to the keyboard and the display component is rotated about the first axis by at least 180 degrees relative to the second orientation; and

rotating the visual display on the display screen by 180 degrees responsive to receiving the second detection result from the orientation sensor.

2. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the orientation sensor includes an accelerometer.

3. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

receiving, from the orientation sensor, a third detection result indicating that the portable computer has transitioned from the third orientation to the first orientation; and,

maintaining an orientation of the visual display on the display screen responsive to receiving the third detection result from the orientation sensor.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises transitioning the portable computer from a first mode to a second mode, in which the visual display is rotated 180 degrees with respect to the visual display in the first mode, responsive to receiving the first detection result.

5. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 4 , wherein the first mode is a laptop mode and the second mode is an easel mode.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 4 , wherein the method further comprises transitioning the portable computer from the second mode to a third mode, in which the visual display is rotated 180 degrees with respect to the visual display in the second mode, responsive to receiving the second detection result.

7. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the first mode is a laptop mode, the second mode is an easel mode, and the third mode is a frame mode.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the method further comprises, in the third mode, preventing the portable computer from responding to pressed keys of the keyboard.

9. A method of operating a portable computer that comprises at least one processor, a display component comprising a display screen, a keyboard, and an orientation sensor, the method comprising:

receiving, by the at least one processor from the orientation sensor, a first detection result indicating that the portable computer has transitioned from a first orientation, in which the display component is disposed at an angle between 0 degrees and 180 degrees with respect to the keyboard about a first axis that is parallel to one of a height dimension and a length dimension of the display screen, to a second orientation, in which the display component is disposed at an angle between 180 degrees and 320 degrees with respect to the keyboard about the first axis;

rotating, by the at least one processor, a visual display on the display screen by 180 degrees responsive to receiving the first detection result from the orientation sensor, wherein rotating the visual display on the display screen responsive to receiving the first detection result further comprises enlarging content in the visual display on the display screen;

receiving, by the at least one processor from the orientation sensor, a second detection result indicating that the portable computer has transitioned from the second orientation to a third orientation, in which the display component is disposed at an angle between 180 degrees and 320 degrees with respect to the keyboard and the display component is rotated about the first axis by at least 180 degrees relative to the second orientation; and

rotating, by the at least one processor, the visual display on the display screen by 180 degrees responsive to receiving the second detection result from the orientation sensor.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the orientation sensor includes an accelerometer.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

receiving, by the at least one processor from the orientation sensor, a third detection result indicating that the portable computer has transitioned from the third orientation to the first orientation; and,

maintaining, by the at least one processor, an orientation of the visual display on the display screen responsive to receiving the third detection result from the orientation sensor.

The method of claim 9 , further comprising transitioning, by the at least one processor, the portable computer from a first mode to a second mode, in which the visual display is rotated 180 degrees with respect to the visual display in the first mode, responsive to receiving the first detection result.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first mode is a laptop mode and the second mode is an easel mode.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising transitioning, by the at least one processor, the portable computer from the second mode to a third mode, in which the visual display is rotated 180 degrees with respect to the visual display in the second mode, responsive to receiving the second detection result.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first mode is a laptop mode, the second mode is an easel mode, and the third mode is a frame mode.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising, by the at least one processor, in the third mode, preventing the portable computer from responding to pressed keys of the keyboard.

17. A portable computer comprising:

a display component comprising a display screen;

a keyboard;

an orientation sensor; and

at least one processor configured to:

receive, from the orientation sensor, a first detection result indicating that the portable computer has transitioned from a first orientation, in which the display component is disposed at an angle between 0 degrees and 180 degrees with respect to the keyboard about a first axis that is parallel to one of a height dimension and a length dimension of the display screen, to a second orientation, in which the display component is disposed at an angle between 180 degrees and 320 degrees with respect to the keyboard about the first axis;

rotate a visual display on the display screen by 180 degrees responsive to receiving the first detection result from the orientation sensor, wherein rotating the visual display on the display screen responsive to receiving the first detection result further comprises enlarging content in the visual display on the display screen;

receive, from the orientation sensor, a second detection result indicating that the portable computer has transitioned from the second orientation to a third orientation, in which the display component is disposed at an angle between 180 degrees and 320 degrees with respect to the keyboard and the display component is rotated about the first axis by at least 180 degrees relative to the second orientation; and

rotate the visual display on the display screen by 180 degrees responsive to receiving the second detection result from the orientation sensor.

18. The portable computer of claim 17 , wherein the orientation sensor includes an accelerometer.

19. The portable computer of claim 17 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to:

receive, from the orientation sensor, a third detection result indicating that the portable computer has transitioned from the third orientation to the first orientation; and,

maintain an orientation of the visual display on the display screen responsive to receiving the third detection result from the orientation sensor.

20. The portable computer of claim 17 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to transition the portable computer from a first mode to a second mode, in which the visual display is rotated 180 degrees with respect to the visual display in the first mode, responsive to receiving the first detection result.

21. The portable computer of claim 20 , wherein the first mode is a laptop mode and the second mode is an easel mode.

22. The portable computer of claim 20 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to transition the portable computer from the second mode to a third mode, in which the visual display is rotated 180 degrees with respect to the visual display in the second mode, responsive to receiving the second detection result.

23. The portable computer of claim 22 , wherein the first mode is a laptop mode, the second mode is an easel mode, and the third mode is a frame mode.

24. The portable computer of claim 22 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to, in the third mode, prevent the portable computer from responding to pressed keys of the keyboard.
