Abstract

Some embodiments of a device comprise an image-forming medium and one or more sensors that are attached to the image-forming medium. Also, in some embodiments, the image-forming medium is paper or a medium that has paper-like characteristics, at least some of the one or more sensors are microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), or the one or more sensors are configured to be powered by wireless power transfer. And some embodiments of the device further comprise a system-on-a-chip that is in communication with the one or more sensors, a transceiver that is in communication with the system-on-a-chip, or a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag.

Claims (54)

1. A device comprising:

an image-forming medium;

a transmitter that is attached to the image-forming medium; and

one or more sensors that are attached to the image-forming medium,

wherein the image-forming medium, the transmitter, and the one or more sensors are configured to travel along an image-forming path through an image-forming apparatus,

wherein the one or more sensors are configured to generate sensed data while traveling along the image-forming path, and

wherein the transmitter is configured to obtain the sensed data and transmit the sensed data to another device.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the image-forming medium is paper.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the one or more sensors are microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).

4. The device of claim 1 , further including:

a system-on-a-chip that is in communication with the one or more sensors.

5. The device of claim 4 , further including:

a transceiver that is in communication with the system-on-a-chip.

6. The device of claim 1 , further including a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors are configured to be powered by wireless power transfer.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more sensors is no thicker than 0.5 mm.

9. The device of claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one memory that is attached to the image-forming medium; and

at least one processor that is attached to the image-forming medium, wherein the at least one processor and the at least one memory are configured to travel along the image-forming path, and wherein the at least one processor and the at least one memory are configured to cooperate to:

obtain the sensed data from the one or more sensors, and

control the transmitter to send the sensed data to the other device.

10. The device of claim 9 , further comprising:

a transceiver, wherein the transceiver includes the transmitter, and

wherein the at least one processor and the at least one memory are further configured to cooperate to:

while traveling along the image-forming path, receive, via the transceiver, time data that indicate a plurality of times;

while traveling along the image-forming path, add respective data indicating respective times, of the plurality of times, to corresponding sensed data of the sensed data, wherein each time of the respective times indicates a respective window of time within which the corresponding sensed data were obtained; and

control the transceiver to send the respective data indicating the respective times to the other device with the sensed data.

11. The device of claim 9 , wherein the transceiver transmitter, the at least one memory, and at least one processor are all formed on a same substrate.

12. The device of claim 9 , wherein the one or more sensors, the transmitter, the at least one memory, and at least one processor are all formed on a same flexible substrate.

13. The device of claim 9 , wherein the other device is an image-forming device.

14. The device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a wireless-power receiver.

15. The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors include one or more of the following: a temperature sensor, a vibration sensor, a pressure sensor, a gyroscope, a color sensor, a light sensor, a humidity sensor, a chemical sensor, and a voltage sensor.

16. The device of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor and the at least one memory are further configured to cooperate to:

store the sensed data while traveling along the image-forming path; and

control the transmitter to send the stored sensed data to the other device after reaching an end of the image-forming path.

17. The device of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor and the at least one memory are further configured to cooperate to:

control the transmitter to send the sensed data to the other device while traveling along the image-forming path.

18. The device of claim 9 , further comprising:

a transceiver, wherein the transceiver includes the transmitter, and

wherein the at least one processor and the at least one memory are further configured to cooperate to:

while traveling along the image-forming path, receive, via the transceiver, position data that indicate a plurality of positions;

while traveling along the image-forming path, add respective data indicating respective positions, of the plurality of positions, to corresponding sensed data of the sensed data, wherein each position of the respective positions indicates a respective position of the image-forming medium on the image-forming path at which the corresponding sensed data were obtained; and

control the transceiver to send the respective data indicating the respective positions to the other device with the sensed data.

19. A device comprising:

a flexible substrate;

a transmitter that is attached to the flexible substrate;

one or more sensors that are attached to the flexible substrate;

at least one memory that is attached to the flexible substrate; and

at least one processor that is attached to the flexible substrate,

wherein the flexible substrate, the transmitter, the one or more sensors, the at least one memory, and the at least one processor are configured to travel along an image-forming path through an image-forming apparatus, and

wherein the at least one processor and the at least one memory are configured to cooperate to

control the one or more sensors to continually or continuously generate sensed data from a commencement of travel along at least part of the image-forming path to an end of travel along the at least part of the image forming path, and

control the transmitter to transmit the sensed data to another device.
