Abstract

A universal mounting system for supporting a plurality of photovoltaic modules on a sloped support surface, such as a sloped roof, is disclosed herein. The universal mounting system may include one or more support surface attachment devices, each support surface attachment device configured to attach one or more photovoltaic modules to a support surface; and one or more module coupling devices, each module coupling device configured to couple a plurality of photovoltaic modules to one another.

Claims (55)

1. A clamping device configured to secure a photovoltaic module to a support surface, the clamping device comprising:

a clamp assembly including:

an upper coupling member including:

a flange extending in a longitudinal direction,

a base protruding from a lower surface of the flange near a first end of the flange such that the base extends in the longitudinal direction along the flange and protrudes in a direction transverse to a plane parallel to the lower surface of the flange,

a shortened protruding member protruding from the lower surface of the flange near a second end of the flange, opposite the first end, such that the shortened protruding member extends in the longitudinal direction along the flange and protrudes in the direction transverse to the plane parallel to the lower surface of the flange, the shortened protruding member being shortened relative to the base and disposed spaced apart from the base,

a groove extending along an underside of the second end of the flange in the longitudinal direction, the groove being spaced apart from the base a distance that is greater than a distance between the base and the shortened protruding member, and a width and depth of the groove being sized to receive a protrusion of an elongated skirt, and

one or more first elongated teeth disposed on the base, the one or more first elongated teeth being elongated in the longitudinal direction along a side of the base; and

a lower coupling member that is adjustably connected to the upper coupling member via a fastener, the lower coupling member including:

an inner wall section extending in the longitudinal direction,

a ledge extending from a lower edge of the inner wall section such that the ledge extends in the longitudinal direction along the inner wall section and protrudes in a direction transverse to a plane parallel to a side of the inner wall section, and

one or more second teeth disposed on the inner wall section, the one or more second teeth being elongated in the longitudinal direction along the side of the inner wall section,

wherein the one or more second teeth are correspondingly shaped to engage the one or more first elongated teeth when the fastener is tightened, and

wherein the ledge extends outwardly to protrude in a direction that is transverse to the direction in which the base protrudes, thereby providing a clamp gap in which the photovoltaic module is clampable.

2. The clamping device according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more first elongated teeth include a plurality of first teeth and the one or more second teeth on the lower coupling member include a plurality of second teeth,

wherein a predetermined first tooth of the plurality of first teeth is configured to engage with a predetermined second tooth of the plurality of second teeth when the fastener is being tightened to provide predetermined settings for photovoltaic modules having a module thickness of: 32 millimeters, 33 millimeters, 35 millimeters, 38 millimeters, 40 millimeters, or 46 millimeters.

The clamping device according to claim 2 , further comprising a spring member disposed between the upper coupling member and the lower coupling member such that the clamp assembly is securable while maintaining a minimum gap between the upper coupling member and the lower coupling member, and the spring member configured to hold the clamp assembly open during installation of the one or more photovoltaic modules into the clamp assembly.

4. The clamping device according to claim 3 , wherein the upper coupling member further includes:

a flange portion having an angled lower surface, and

a vertical base portion extending downwardly from the flange portion, and

wherein the angled lower surface of the flange portion is disposed to interact with the spring member to displace the vertical base portion and the plurality of first teeth outwardly away from the plurality of second teeth on the lower coupling member when the fastener is being tightened until a desired module thickness setting, thereby pulling the upper coupling member into the lower coupling member.

5. The clamping device according to claim 1 , wherein the lower coupling member further includes an upwardly tapered ledge extending outwardly from a side of the clamp assembly, the upwardly tapered ledge including an end portion that accommodates a wire retaining clip.

6. The clamping device according to claim 5 , wherein the upwardly tapered ledge of the lower clamp member further includes a water drainage trough formed therein for draining water from the one or more photovoltaic modules.

7. The clamping device according to claim 5 , wherein the upwardly tapered ledge is a first ledge,

wherein the side of the clamp assembly is a first side thereof,

wherein the lower

coupling member further includes a second ledge extending outwardly from a second side of the clamp assembly, the second ledge being oppositely disposed relative to the first ledge, and

wherein the second ledge includes:

a groove formed therein for engaging with a mating protrusion of a skirt spacer member, and

a retaining element for retaining the skirt spacer member in place on the second ledge after the mating protrusion of the skirt spacer member is engaged with the groove in the second ledge.

8. A coupling device to secure a corner of a first photovoltaic module to a corner of a second photovoltaic module, the coupling device comprising:

an upper coupling member including:

a flange extending in a longitudinal direction,

a base protruding from a lower surface of the flange near a first end of the flange such that the base extends in the longitudinal direction along the flange and protrudes in a direction transverse to a plane parallel to the lower surface of the flange,

a shortened protruding member protruding from the lower surface of the flange near a second end of the flange, opposite the first end, such that the shortened protruding member extends in the longitudinal direction along the flange and protrudes in the direction transverse to the plane parallel to the lower surface of the flange, the shortened protruding member being shortened relative to the base and spaced apart from the base,

a groove extending along an underside of the second end of the flange in the longitudinal direction, the groove being spaced apart from the base a distance that is greater than a distance between the base and the shortened protruding member, and a width and depth of the groove being sized to receive a protrusion of an elongated skirt, and

one or more first elongated teeth disposed on the base, the one or more first elongated teeth being elongated in the longitudinal direction along a side of the base; and

a lower coupling member that is adjustably connected to the upper coupling member via a fastener, the lower coupling member including:

an inner wall section extending in the longitudinal direction,

a ledge extending from a lower edge of the inner wall section such that the ledge extends in the longitudinal direction along the inner wall section and protrudes in a direction transverse to a plane parallel to a side of the inner wall section, and

one or more second teeth disposed on the inner wall section, the one or more second teeth being elongated in the longitudinal direction along the side of the inner wall section,

wherein the one or more second teeth are correspondingly shaped to engage the one or more first elongated teeth when the fastener is tightened, and

wherein the ledge extends outwardly to protrude in a direction that is transverse to the direction in which the base protrudes, thereby providing a coupling position whereat the corner of the first photovoltaic module and the corner of the second photovoltaic module are adjacently alignable during installation along the longitudinal direction of a same side of the coupling device.

9. The coupling device according to claim 8 , wherein the one or more first elongated teeth include a plurality of first teeth and the one or more second teeth include a plurality of second teeth, and

wherein a predetermined first tooth of the plurality of first teeth is positioned to engage with a predetermined second tooth of the plurality of second teeth when the fastener is tightened to provide predetermined settings for photovoltaic modules having a module thickness of: 32 millimeters, 33 millimeters, 35 millimeters, 38 millimeters, 40 millimeters, or 46 millimeters.

10. The coupling device according to claim 8 , wherein the ledge of the lower coupling member is a first ledge,

wherein the lower coupling member includes a second ledge, the second ledge being oppositely disposed relative to the first ledge,

wherein the second ledge of the lower coupling member includes a groove formed therein that engagingly corresponds to a mating protrusion of a skirt spacer member, and

wherein the second ledge includes a retaining element for retaining the skirt spacer member in place on the second ledge after the mating protrusion of the skirt spacer member is engaged with the groove in the second ledge.

11. The coupling device according to claim 10 , wherein the second ledge further includes a plurality of elongated serrations that extend along a surface thereof adjacent the retaining element.

12. The coupling device according to 8 , wherein the lower coupling member includes a plurality of ridges disposed on a bottom surface thereof, the plurality of ridges being positioned to engage the lower coupling member with a glider member during installation.

13. The coupling device according to claim 8 , wherein the ledge of the lower coupling member further includes a drainage trough, the drainage trough being formed in a top surface of the ledge and extending in the longitudinal direction along the top surface of the ledge.

14. The coupling device according to claim 8 , wherein the a projection direction of the ledge of the lower coupling member is upwardly tapered.

The coupling device according to claim 8 , further comprising a spring member disposed between the upper coupling member and the lower coupling member such that the upper coupling member and the lower coupling member are adjustably connected to each other while maintaining a minimum gap between the upper coupling member and the lower coupling member.

The coupling device according to claim 15 , wherein the spring member defines a substantially z-shaped profile and includes a top leg portion, a middle diagonal leg portion, and a bottom leg portion, wherein the top leg portion, the middle diagonal leg portion, and the bottom leg portion include respective fastener apertures therein, such that the spring member is configured to received the fastener when disposed between the upper coupling member and the lower coupling member.
