Abstract

A furniture system includes an office productivity structure (OPS). The furniture system also includes a sensor coupled to the OPS, the sensor operable to detect occupancy of the OPS and generate an output signal indicative of the occupancy; and a processor coupled to the sensor. The processor is operable to receive the output signal generated by the sensor, determine, based on the output signal, that the OPS is occupied, and, in response to determining that the OPS is occupied, generate a command to initiate at least one action associated with the OPS or an operator of the OPS.

Claims (41)

1. A furniture system comprising:

an office productivity structure (OPS);

a sensor coupled to the OPS, the sensor operable to detect occupancy of the OPS and generate an output signal indicative of the occupancy; and

a processor coupled to the sensor, the processor operable to

receive the output signal generated by the sensor,

determine, based on the output signal, that the OPS is occupied,

in response to determining that the OPS is occupied, generate a command to initiate at least one action associated with the OPS or an operator of the OPS and track an occupancy of the OPS over time, and

predict a future occupancy of the OPS based on the tracked occupancy of the OPS.

2. The furniture system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to generate a second command to initiate at least one additional action associated with the OPS based on the predicted future occupancy of the OPS.

3. The furniture system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine a probable utilization state of the OPS based on the occupancy of the OPS tracked over time.

4. The furniture system of claim 3 , wherein the processor is further configured to monitor movement of the operator of the OPS between one or more locations based on the occupancy of the OPS and the probable utilization state.

5. The furniture system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine a number of occupants in a physical space based on the occupancy of the OPS and an occupancy of one or more additional OPS structures within the physical space.

6. The furniture system of claim 5 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine the number of occupants based on one or more additional inputs.

7. The furniture system of claim 1 , wherein the OPS is an OPS selected from a group consisting of a chair, a table, a workstation, and a desk.

8. The furniture system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one action includes an action selected from the group consisting of adding a meeting to a calendar of the operator of the OPS and reserving space for a meeting.

9. The furniture system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one action includes notifying the operator of a fault with the sensor.

10. The furniture system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one action includes opening one or more software applications.

11. The furniture system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one action includes generating a command to operate heating or cooling for a space associated with the OPS.

12. The furniture system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one action includes generating a command to operate lighting for a space associated with the OPS.

13. The furniture system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one action includes notifying a safety or security system of the occupancy of the OPS.

14. A method of evaluating occupancy of a furniture system, the method comprising:

detecting, by a sensor, an occupancy of an office productivity structure (OPS),

generating, by the sensor, an output signal indicative of the occupancy;

receiving, by a processor, the output signal generated by the sensor;

determining, by the processor, that the OPS is occupied;

in response to determining that the OPS is occupied, generating, by the processor, a command to initiate at least one action associated with the OPS or an operator of the OPS, wherein the occupancy of the OPS is tracked over time and stored in a memory, and

predicting a future occupancy of the OPS based on the tracked occupancy of the OPS.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

generating, by the processor, a second command to initiate at least one additional c action associated with the OPS based on the predicted future occupancy of the OPS.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising determining, by the processor, a number of occupants in a physical space based on the occupancy of the OPS and an occupancy of one or more additional OPS structures within the physical space.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the at least one automatic action is an action selected from the group consisting of adding a meeting to a calendar of the operator of the OPS, reserving space for a meeting, notifying the operator of a fault with the sensor, opening one or more software applications, generating a command to operate heating or cooling for a space associated with the OPS, generating a command to operate lighting for a space associated with the OPS, notifying a safety or security system of the occupancy of the OPS, and identifying a nearby colleague, identifying an interaction with one or more machines.

18. The furniture system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to predict the future occupancy of the OPS based on the tracked occupancy of the OPS using a wavelet analysis to determine one or more periodic patterns.

19. The furniture system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to predict the future occupancy of the OPS based on the tracked occupancy of the OPS by correlating patterns across multiple data types, wherein the data types include one or more of a sensor data type and a calendar data type.

20. A furniture system comprising:

an office productivity structure (OPS);

a sensor coupled to the OPS, the sensor operable to detect occupancy of the OPS and generate an output signal indicative of the occupancy; and

a processor coupled to the sensor, the processor operable to:

receive the output signal generated by the sensor,

determine, based on the output signal, that the OPS is occupied,

track an occupancy of the OPS over time in response to determining that the OPS is occupied; and

predict a future occupancy of the OPS based on the tracked occupancy of the OPS.
