Abstract

A base station distributed unit receives, from a base station central unit, at least one information element indicating activation of a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) packet duplication of at least one bearer of a wireless device. The base station distributed unit transmits, by and based on the activation: PDCP packets of the at least one bearer; and duplicated PDCP packets of the at least one bearer.

Claims (65)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, by a base station distributed unit from a base station central unit:

at least one bearer configuration information element indicating that packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) packet duplication is configured for at least one bearer of a wireless device; and

a start marker packet on a user plane, the start marker packet indicating activation of the PDCP packet duplication of the at least one bearer of the wireless device; and

transmitting, by the base station distributed unit to the base station central unit and based on the activation:

PDCP packets of the at least one bearer; and

duplicated PDCP packets of the at least one bearer.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one bearer comprises at least one of:

a signaling radio bearer; or

a data radio bearer.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the base station distributed unit from the base station central unit, at least one second information element indicating deactivation of the PDCP packet duplication of the at least one bearer of the wireless device; and

stopping transmitting, by the base station distributed unit and based on the deactivation, duplicated PDCP packets of the at least one bearer.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting, by the base station distributed unit to the wireless device and based on the start marker packet, a medium access control control element indicating the activation of the PDCP packet duplication of the at least one bearer.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising receiving, by the base station distributed unit and based on the medium access control control element:

PDCP packets of the at least one bearer; and

duplicated PDCP packets of the at least one bearer.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the at least one bearer comprises at least one of:

a signaling radio bearer; or

a data radio bearer.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

receiving, by the base station distributed unit from the base station central unit, at least one second information element indicating deactivation of the PDCP packet duplication of the at least one bearer of the wireless device; and

stopping transmitting, by the base station distributed unit and based on the deactivation, duplicated PDCP packets of the at least one bearer.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting, by the base station distributed unit to the base station central unit, a request message indicating a duplication activation or deactivation request to activate or deactivate duplication of PDCP packets of the at least one bearer of the wireless device,

wherein the duplication activation or deactivation request is based on status information of the base station distributed unit, the status information comprising at least one of:

a traffic load status;

a radio channel status; or

a packet transmission policy.

9. A base station distributed unit, comprising:

one or more processors; and

a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the base station distributed unit to:

receive, from a base station central unit:

at least one bearer configuration information element indicating that packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) packet duplication is configured for at least one bearer of a wireless device; and

a start marker packet on a user plane, the start marker packet indicating activation of the PDCP packet duplication of the at least one bearer of the wireless device; and

transmit, to the base station central unit and based on the activation:

PDCP packets of the at least one bearer; and

duplicated PDCP packets of the at least one bearer.

10. The base station distributed unit of claim 9 , wherein the at least one bearer comprises at least one of:

a signaling radio bearer; or

a data radio bearer.

11. The base station distributed unit of claim 9 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the base station distributed unit to:

receive, unit from the base station central unit, at least one second information element indicating deactivation of the PDCP packet duplication of the at least one bearer of the wireless device; and

stop transmitting, based on the deactivation, duplicated PDCP packets of the at least one bearer.

The base station distributed unit of claim 9 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the base station distributed unit to transmit, to the wireless device and based on the start marker packet, a medium access control control element indicating the activation of the PDCP packet duplication of the at least one bearer.

13. The base station distributed unit of claim 12 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the base station distributed unit to: receive, by the base station distributed unit and based on the medium access control control element:

PDCP packets of the at least one bearer; and

duplicated PDCP packets of the at least one bearer.

14. The base station distributed unit of claim 13 , wherein the at least one bearer comprises at least one of:

a signaling radio bearer; or

a data radio bearer.

15. The base station distributed unit of claim 14 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the base station distributed unit to:

receive, by the base station distributed unit from the base station central unit, at least one second information element indicating deactivation of the PDCP packet duplication of the at least one bearer of the wireless device; and

stop the transmission, by the base station distributed unit and based on the deactivation, of duplicated PDCP packets of the at least one bearer.

16. A method comprising:

transmitting, by a base station central unit to a base station distributed unit:

at least one bearer configuration information element indicating that packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) packet duplication is configured for at least one bearer of a wireless device; and

a start marker packet on a user plane, the start marker packet indicating activation of the PDCP packet duplication of the at least one bearer of the wireless device; and

receiving, by the base station central unit from the base station distributed unit and based on the activation:

PDCP packets of the at least one bearer; and

duplicated PDCP packets of the at least one bearer.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising transmitting, by the base station central unit to the base station distributed unit, at least one second information element indicating deactivation of the PDCP packet duplication of the at least one bearer of the wireless device.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the at least one bearer comprises at least one of:

a signaling radio bearer; or

a data radio bearer.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising transmitting, by the base station central unit to the base station distributed unit, at least one second information element indicating deactivation of the PDCP packet duplication of the at least one bearer of the wireless device.
