Abstract

Disclosed herein is a display apparatus, including: a foldable substrate; a pixel array section including a plurality of pixels disposed on the substrate and each including an electro-optical device; the foldable substrate being folded at a substrate end portion at least on one side thereof around the pixel array section; a peripheral circuit section disposed on the substrate end portion and adapted to drive the pixels of the pixel array section; and a pad section provided on the substrate end portion on which the peripheral circuit section is provided and adapted to electrically connect the peripheral circuit section to the outside of the substrate.

Claims (29)

1. A display apparatus, comprising:

a foldable first substrate;

a pixel array including a plurality of pixels on a central portion of the first substrate, wherein each of the plurality of pixels comprising an electro-optical device;

a peripheral circuit outside of the pixel array, wherein the peripheral circuit is configured to drive the pixel array;

a wiring section between the pixel array and the peripheral circuit;

a circuit section configured to drive the electro-optical device, wherein the circuit section includes a circuit element on the first substrate;

an insulation film on the circuit element; and

a second substrate above the insulation film in a region of the first substrate, wherein the first substrate is folded in a folding region within the wiring section;

the peripheral circuit is outside the wiring section; and

the second substrate is above the pixel array and is not located over the folding region.

2. The display apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the foldable first substrate comprises metal or plastic.

3. The display apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the insulation film comprises a multi-layer film.

4. The display apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a groove between the pixel array and the folding region.

5. The display apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the groove extends into the insulation film.

6. The display apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the groove extends through less than an entirety of the insulation film.

7. The display apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising a sheet resin between the insulation film and the second substrate.

8. The display apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the sheet resin extends into the groove.

9. The display apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising a protective layer over the pixel array.

10. The display apparatus of claim 9 , wherein an outer-most edge of the protective layer is between the groove and the pixel array.

11. The display apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the groove is between an outer-most edge of the second substrate and the pixel array.

12. The display apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the electro-optical device is an organic electroluminescence (EL) element.

13. The display apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of grooves surrounding the pixel array.

14. The display apparatus of claim 13 , wherein a first groove of the plurality of grooves is between the pixel array and the folding region.

15. The display apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the folding region is between the pixel array and a second groove of the plurality of grooves.

16. The display apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the pixel array is between the second groove and a third groove of the plurality of grooves.

17. The display apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising pads on a peripheral portions of the first substrate, wherein each of the pads is connected to the peripheral circuit, and a second groove of the plurality of grooves is between the pixel array and the pads.

18. The display apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the pixel array is between the first groove and the second groove.

19. The display apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the folding region is between the second groove and the pixel array.

20. The display apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the peripheral circuit is between the second groove and the pixel array.
