Abstract

Apparatus, systems, and methods are provided for measuring and analyzing movements of a body and for communicating information related to such body movements over a network. In certain embodiments, a system gathers biometric and biomechanical data relating to positions, orientations, and movements of various body parts of a user performed during sports activities, physical rehabilitation, or military or law enforcement activities. The biometric and biomechanical data can be communicated to a local and/or remote interface, which uses digital performance assessment tools to provide a performance evaluation to the user. The performance evaluation may include a graphical representation (e.g., a video), statistical information, and/or a comparison to another user and/or instructor. In some embodiments, the biometric and biomechanical data is communicated wirelessly to one or more devices including a processor, display, and/or data storage medium for further analysis, archiving, and data mining. In some embodiments, the device includes a cellular telephone.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the sensor module comprises at least one of: an accelerometer, a multiple axis motion sensor, and a 9-axis motion sensor.

3. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the sensor module comprises a wireless communication unit configured to directly or indirectly transmit and receive data to and from an external source.

4. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the wearable garment further comprises a communication interface configured to communicate identification data about a wearer of the garment to a remote processor, and wherein the sensor module is configured to log information about usage of the wearable garment by the wearer.

5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the sensor module is coupled to a body-conforming portion of the wearable garment.

6. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the wearable garment further comprises a heart rate sensor.

7. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the sensor module is integrated into the wearable garment.

8. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the sensor module comprises a wireless communication unit configured to directly or indirectly transmit and receive data to and from a server or a terminal device or both from a server or a terminal device.

9. The system according to claim 1 , wherein providing the visual indication includes providing instructional information for an athletic performance that is associated with the primary and secondary movements.

10. The system according to claim 1 , wherein comparing the index value to the reference value includes identifying a correlation with at least one other index value associated with the same wearable garment.

11. The system according to claim 1 , wherein comparing the index value to the reference value includes identifying a correlation with at least one other index value associated with a different wearable garment.

12. A system comprising:

a display device;

a processor;

a wearable garment comprising:

a sensor module attached to the wearable garment, the sensor module comprising a sensing element configured to measure movement experienced by the wearable garment, and

an interface coupling the sensor module and the processor; and

a memory for logging measurement information from the sensor module;

wherein the processor is configured to process the logged measurement information by separating the measurement information into primary and secondary movements and calculating an index value using information about the primary and secondary movements, and wherein the processor is configured to compare the index value to a reference value to provide a comparison result, and wherein the display device is configured to provide a visual indication of the comparison result.

13. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the memory for logging the measurement information is a built-in memory of the sensor module or an external memory in respect to the sensor module, and wherein the processor is a built-in processor of the sensor module or an external processor in respect to the sensor module.

14. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the system comprises a processor external in respect to the sensor module, and wherein the interface comprises a wireless link.

15. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the processor or the sensor module is configured to receive a new machine-readable instruction for sensing from an external source via a wireless communication unit, store the new machine-readable instruction for sensing to the memory, and run the new machine-readable instruction on the processor.

16. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the processor is configured to use information from the sensing element to provide a performance fingerprint for a wearer of the wearable garment.

17. A method of using a wearable garment that includes a sensor module configured to measure movement experienced by the wearable garment, the method comprising the steps of:

measuring movement with the sensor module over a first time frame;

forming output measurement data, from the sensor module, for a processor;

providing a visual indication of a performance comparison result using a display device; and

processing the measurement data with the processor into an index value representative of the movement of the wearable garment, wherein the processing comprises:

separating the measurement data into primary and secondary movements,

processing information about the primary and secondary movements to determine movement parameters,

calculating a first index value representative of the parameters of the primary and secondary movements for the first time frame,

comparing the first index value to a reference value to provide the performance comparison result.

18. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the method further comprises:
