Abstract

A rotation apparatus is usable with a control drum in a nuclear environment. The control drum is situated on a shaft that is rotatable about a horizontal axis of rotation, and the control drum includes an absorber portion and a reflector portion. The rotation apparatus includes a rotation mechanism that is structured to apply to the shaft in an operational position a force that biases the shaft to rotate toward a shutdown position, with the force being resisted by a motor to retain the shaft in the operational position when the motor is powered. The force is not resisted when the motor is unpowered. The rotation apparatus further includes a rotation management system that controls the rotation of the shaft.

Claims (43)

1. A system, comprising:

a motor;

a control drum comprising a shaft, wherein the shaft comprises a reflector portion and an absorber portion, wherein the shaft is configurable between an operational configuration, wherein the reflector portion faces toward a core of a nuclear environment, and a shutdown configuration, wherein the absorber portion faces toward the core, wherein the shaft is operably coupled to the motor, wherein the shaft is configured to transition toward the operational configuration based on the motor being energized, and wherein the shaft is configured to transition toward the shutdown configuration based on the motor de-energizing; and

an eddy current brake configured to control rotational velocity of the shaft as the shaft approaches the shutdown configuration, wherein the eddy current brake comprises:

a first magnet;

a second magnet, wherein the first magnet and the second magnet are fixed relative to one another; and

a conductive disc rotatable between the first magnet and the second magnet, wherein the conductive disc comprises:

a plurality of radially-oriented fins, wherein each fin comprises a first arc length; and

a solid portion comprising a second arc length greater than the first arc length.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of radially-oriented fins are positioned between the first magnet and the second magnet based on the shaft being in the operational configuration.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the solid portion is rotatable between the first magnet and the second magnet based on the motor de-energizing.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein eddy currents are induced in the solid portion to control the rotational velocity of the shaft as the solid portion rotates between the first magnet and the second magnet.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a rotation initiator configured to move the shaft toward the shutdown configuration.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the rotation initiator comprises at least two magnets.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the rotation initiator comprises a spring.

8. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a lock configured to resist movement of the shaft away from the shutdown configuration.

9. A system, comprising:

a motor;

a control drum comprising a shaft, wherein the shaft comprises a reflector zone and an absorber zone, wherein the shaft is configurable between an operational position, wherein the reflector zone faces toward a core of a nuclear environment, and a shutdown position, wherein the absorber zone faces toward the core, wherein the shaft is operably coupled to the motor, wherein the shaft is movable toward the operational position based on the motor being energized, and wherein the shaft is movable toward the shutdown position based on the motor being de-energized;

an eddy current brake configured to reduce rotational velocity of the shaft as the shaft approaches the shutdown position, wherein the eddy current brake comprises a conductive disc, comprising:

a center portion;

a plurality of radially-oriented fins extending from the center portion, wherein each fin comprises a first arc length; and

a solid portion extending from the center portion, wherein the solid portion comprises a second arc length greater than the first arc length, and wherein the plurality of radially-oriented fins and the solid portion define a radial outermost circumference of the conductive disc.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the eddy current brake further comprises two magnets, wherein the conductive disc is rotatable between the two magnets.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of radially-oriented fins are positioned between the two magnets based on the shaft being in the operational position.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the solid portion is rotatable between the two magnets based on the motor de-energizing.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein eddy currents are induced in the solid portion to reduce the rotational velocity of the shaft as the solid portion rotates between the two magnets.

14. The system of claim 9 , further comprising a rotation initiator configured to move the shaft toward the shutdown position.

15. The system of claim 9 , further comprising a lock configured to resist movement of the shaft away from the shutdown position.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein:

the plurality of radially-oriented fins rotate between the two magnets during a first portion of rotation of the conductive disc;

the solid portion rotates between the two magnets during a second portion of rotation of the conductive disc; and

wherein the second portion of rotation is after the first portion of rotation.

17. A system, comprising:

a motor;

a control drum comprising a shaft, wherein the shaft comprises a reflector zone and an absorber zone, wherein the shaft is configurable between an operational position, wherein the reflector zone faces toward a core of a nuclear environment, and a shutdown position, wherein the absorber zone faces toward the core, wherein the shaft is operably coupled to the motor, wherein the shaft is movable toward the operational position based on the motor being energized, and wherein the shaft is movable toward the shutdown position based on the motor being de-energized; and

an eddy current brake configured to control velocity of the shaft as the shaft approaches the shutdown position, wherein the eddy current brake comprises:

a first magnet;

a second magnet; and

a conductive disc rotatable between the first magnet and the second magnet, wherein the conductive disc comprises:

a plurality of fins, wherein each fin comprises a first arc length, and wherein a first non-zero amount of eddy currents are induced in the conductive disc as the fins rotate between the first magnet and the second magnet; and

a solid portion comprising a second arc length greater than the first arc length, wherein a second non-zero amount of eddy currents are induced in the conductive disc as the solid portion rotates between the first magnet and the second magnet, and wherein the second non-zero amount of eddy currents is greater than the first non-zero amount of eddy currents.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the first magnet and the second magnet are fixed relative to one another.
