Abstract

Stapling assemblies for use with a surgical stapler are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, the stapling assembly includes a cartridge having a plurality of staples disposed therein and a non-fibrous adjunct formed of at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer and configured to be releasably retained on the cartridge. Adjunct systems for use with a surgical stapler are also provided. Surgical end effectors using the stapling assemblies are also provided. Methods for manufacturing stapling assemblies and using the same are also provided.

Claims (20)

1. A stapling assembly for use with a surgical stapler, comprising:

a cartridge having a plurality of staples disposed therein, the plurality of staples being configured to be deployed into tissue; and

a non-fibrous adjunct formed of at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer and configured to be releasably retained on the cartridge such that the adjunct can be attached to tissue by the plurality of staples in the cartridge, wherein the adjunct is formed of at least one lattice structure formed of a plurality of repeating interconnected 3D unit cells with hollow tubes formed therebetween, each unit cell having an internal surface defining an internal volume, wherein the hollow tubes are interconnected to allow the internal volumes of the unit cells to be in fluid communication to promote accelerated tissue ingrowth within the adjunct.

2. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein each hollow tubular interconnection defines an opening having a diameter from 100 micrometers to 3500 micrometers.

3. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of repeating unit cells comprises a triply periodic minimal surface structure.

4. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of repeating unit cells comprises a Schwarz-P structure.

5. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of repeating unit cells comprises a modified Schwarz-P structure.

6. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the hollow interconnections at least partially maintain fluid communication between at least a portion of the internal volumes of the unit cells while the adjunct is in tissue deployed state to thereby encourage cell mobility throughout the adjunct.

7. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein each unit cell has a wall thickness from 0.1 mm to 0.3 mm.

8. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein each unit cell has a surface to volume ratio of 7 to 20.

9. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the adjunct, while under an applied stress in a range of 30 kPa to 90 kPa, is configured to undergo a strain in a range of 0.1 to 0.9.

10. The stapling assembly of claim 9 , wherein the strain is in the range of 0.1 to 0.7.

11. A stapling assembly for use with a surgical stapler, comprising:

a cartridge having a plurality of staples disposed therein, the plurality of staples being configured to be deployed into tissue; and

a non-fibrous adjunct formed of at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer and configured to be releasably retained on the cartridge such that the adjunct can be attached to tissue by the plurality of staples in the cartridge, the adjunct being formed of a plurality of repeating hollow unit cells that are interconnected such that a lumen is formed between adjacent unit cells to thereby create channels therebetween such that a continuous network of channels are present within the adjunct to allow one or more fluids to enter and transfer throughout the adjunct when the adjunct is in a tissue deployed state; wherein each unit cell has a surface to volume ratio of 7 to 20.

12. The stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein each lumen has a diameter from 100 micrometers to 3500 micrometers.

13. The stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of repeating unit cells comprises a triply periodic minimal surface structure.

14. The stapling assembly of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of repeating unit cells comprises a Schwarz-P structure.

15. The stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein at least a portion of the lumens are configured to at least partially maintain the channels while the adjunct is in tissue deployed state to thereby encourage cell mobility throughout the adjunct.

16. The stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein each unit cell has a wall thickness from 0.1 mm to 0.3 mm.
