Abstract

A wearable therapeutic device to facilitate care of a subject is provided. The wearable therapeutic device can include a garment having a sensing electrode. The garment includes at least one of an inductive element and a capacitive element, and a controller identifies an inductance of the inductive element or a capacitance of the capacitive element, and determines a confidence level of information received from the sensing electrode based on the inductance or the capacitance. The wearable therapeutic device also includes an alarm module coupled with the controller and configured to provide a notification to a subject based on the confidence level.

Claims (28)

1. A wearable cardiac therapeutic device for use in monitoring respiration and cardiac activity and treating an arrhythmic cardiac event in a subject, comprising:

a garment configured to be worn about a torso of the subject;

a plurality of electrocardiograph sensing electrodes included in the garment, the plurality of electrocardiograph sensing electrodes configured to receive electrocardiograph information from the subject;

a plurality of therapy electrodes included in the garment;

at least one of an inductive element having an inductance and a capacitive element having a capacitance, the at least one of the inductive element and the capacitive element included in a portion of the garment; and

a controller configured to be operably coupled to the plurality of electrocardiograph sensing electrodes, the plurality of therapy electrodes, and the at least one of the inductive element and the capacitive element, the controller configured

to identify an arrhythmic cardiac event, and

responsive to identification of the arrhythmic cardiac event, to apply treatment to the subject via the plurality of therapy electrodes, the controller further being configured

to determine respiration information of the subject based on a change in at least one of the inductance of the inductive element and the capacitance of the capacitive element, and to determine a confidence level that the subject is in need of treatment, wherein determining the confidence level comprises determining whether an amount of stretch of the garment is within a tolerance range.

2. The wearable cardiac therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to change the confidence level that the subject is in need of treatment based on the respiration information of the subject.

3. The wearable cardiac therapeutic device of claim 2 , wherein the controller is further configured to cause the plurality of therapy electrodes to apply the treatment to the subject based further on the respiration information of the subject.

The wearable cardiac therapeutic device of claim 2 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine with a high confidence level that the subject is in need of treatment based on determining that the amount of stretch of the garment is within the tolerance range and determining that the subject has stopped breathing.

The wearable cardiac therapeutic device of claim 2 , wherein the controller is further configured to reduce the confidence level that the subject is in need of treatment based on determining that the amount of stretch of the garment is within the tolerance range and determining the respiration information indicates normal breathing.

The wearable cardiac therapeutic device of claim 2 , wherein, in response to determining that the amount of stretch of the garment is within the tolerance range, the controller is further configured to determine with a high level of confidence that the plurality of electrocardiograph sensing electrodes are properly positioned and the plurality of therapy electrodes are properly positioned to apply an electric shock to the subject.

7. The wearable cardiac therapeutic device of claim 6 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine whether the electrocardiograph information is accurate based on the level of confidence that the plurality of electrocardiograph sensing electrodes are properly positioned.

8. A wearable cardiac therapeutic device for use in monitoring respiration and cardiac activity and treating an arrhythmic cardiac event in a subject, comprising:

a garment configured to be worn about a torso of the subject;

a plurality of electrocardiograph sensing electrodes included in the garment, the plurality of electrocardiograph sensing electrodes configured to receive electrocardiograph information from the subject;

a plurality of therapy electrodes included in the garment;

at least one of an inductive element having an inductance and a capacitive element having a capacitance, the at least one of the inductive element and the capacitive element included in a portion of the garment; and

a controller configured to be operably coupled to the plurality of electrocardiograph sensing electrodes, the plurality of therapy electrodes, and the at least one of the inductive element and the capacitive element, the controller configured

to identify an arrhythmic cardiac event, and

responsive to identification of the arrhythmic cardiac event, to apply treatment to the subject via the plurality of therapy electrodes, the controller further being configured

to determine respiration information of the subject based on a change in at least one of the inductance of the inductive element and the capacitance of the capacitive element, and to determine whether an amount of stretch of the garment is beyond a predetermined tolerance threshold, and to provide a notification responsive to determining that the amount of stretch of the garment is beyond the predetermined tolerance threshold.

9. The wearable cardiac therapeutic device of claim 8 , wherein the notification is provided to at least one of a doctor of the subject, a family member of the subject, a friend of the subject, a health care provider proximate to the subject, and a health care provider at a remote location.

10. The wearable cardiac therapeutic device of claim 8 , wherein the notification is provided one of audibly, visually, or haptically.

11. The wearable cardiac therapeutic device of claim 8 , wherein the notification indicates that the garment is one of too loose about the subject, needs to be laundered to restore the garment's elasticity, and needs to be replaced.

12. The wearable cardiac therapeutic device of claim 8 , wherein the notification comprises an instruction to the subject to at least one of tighten the garment, launder the garment, and replace the garment.
