Abstract

A method and system for controlling discontinuous reception (DRX) in a mobile device in a wireless communications network uses autonomous DRX control after initial VoIP traffic setup. If the mobile device transmits a negative-acknowledgement signal (NACK) indicating unsuccessful receipt of a VoIP packet, then it autonomously turns on a predetermined delay time later to receive the retransmission of the VoIP packet. The predetermined delay time is related to the time for the base station to process the NACK and prepare the VoIP packet for retransmission. When the mobile device transmits or retransmits a VoIP packet, reception is deactivated, but is autonomously activated the predetermined delay time later to receive an acknowledgement signal (ACK) or NACK. VoIP packets may be transmitted from the mobile device the predetermined delay time before VoIP packets are transmitted from the base station.

Claims (31)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a storage medium comprising instructions; and

one or more processors in communication with the storage medium, wherein the one or more processors execute the instructions to perform operations comprising:

transmitting, to a base station, a negative-acknowledgement signal (NACK) indicating a reception failure of downlink data from the base station;

starting a delay time in response to transmitting the NACK signal; and

activating, at expiration of the delay time, reception for receiving the downlink data retransmitted by the base station.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the delay time is determined based on information transmitted by the base station.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the information is transmitted by radio resource control (RRC) signalling from the base station.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise maintaining reception until receiving, in a time duration, the downlink data retransmitted by the base station.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the operations further comprise receiving, in the time duration, the downlink data retransmitted by the base station.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the delay time is a round trip time (RTT).

7. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise transmitting uplink data to the base station together with the NACK.

8. A method, comprising:

transmitting, to a base station, a negative-acknowledgement signal (NACK) indicating a reception failure of downlink data from the base station;

starting a delay time in response to transmitting the NACK signal; and

activating, at expiration of the delay time, reception for receiving the downlink data retransmitted by the base station.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the delay time is determined based on information transmitted by the base station.

10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the information is transmitted by radio resource control (RRC) signalling from the base station.

11. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising maintaining reception until receiving, in a time duration, the downlink data retransmitted by the base station.

12. The method according to claim 11 , further comprising receiving, in the time duration, the downlink data retransmitted by the base station.

13. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the delay time is a round trip time (RTT).

14. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising transmitting uplink data to the base station together with the NACK.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that are configured to, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

transmitting, to a base station, a negative-acknowledgement signal (NACK) indicating a reception failure of downlink data from the base station;

starting a delay time in response to transmitting the NACK signal; and

activating, at expiration of the delay time, reception for receiving the downlink data retransmitted by the base station.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 15 , wherein the delay time is determined based on information transmitted by the base station.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 16 , wherein the information is transmitted by radio resource control (RRC) signalling from the base station.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise maintaining reception until receiving, in a time duration, the downlink data retransmitted by the base station.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 18 , wherein the operations further comprise receiving, in the time duration, the downlink data retransmitted by the base station.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 15 , wherein the delay time is a round trip time (RTT).
