Abstract

A force measurement system is disclosed herein. The force measurement system includes a force measurement assembly with at least one load transducer beam having a load transducer frame portion, and a plurality of deformation sensing elements disposed on the load transducer frame portion, a first one of the plurality of deformation sensing elements being sensitive to a first force component of the load and outputting a first output signal representative of the first force component of the load, and a second one of the plurality of deformation sensing elements being sensitive to a second force component of the load and outputting a second output signal representative of the second force component of the load, the first force component of the load being different from the second force component of the load; and a data processing device operatively coupled to the plurality of deformation sensing elements of the load transducer beam.

Claims (31)

1. A force measurement system, comprising:

a force measurement assembly including at least one load transducer beam, the at least one load transducer beam including:

a load transducer frame portion, the load transducer frame portion configured to receive a load that is applied to the load transducer beam; and

a plurality of deformation sensing elements disposed on the load transducer frame portion, a first one of the plurality of deformation sensing elements being sensitive to a first force component of the load and outputting a first output signal representative of the first force component of the load, and a second one of the plurality of deformation sensing elements being sensitive to a second force component of the load and outputting a second output signal representative of the second force component of the load, the first force component of the load being different from the second force component of the load; and

a data processing device operatively coupled to the plurality of deformation sensing elements of the load transducer beam, the data processing device configured to receive the first and second output signals from the first and second ones of the plurality of deformation sensing elements, the data processing device further configured to determine a first output force from the first output signal and a second output force from the second output signal.

The force measurement system according to claim 1 , wherein the first force component of the load sensed by the first one of the plurality of deformation sensing elements comprises a vertical force, and the second force component of the load sensed by the second one of the plurality of deformation sensing elements comprises a shear force.

3. The force measurement system according to claim 2 , wherein the force measurement assembly further comprises a top component configured to receive at least one portion of a body of a user, the top component being supported by the at least one load transducer beam; and

wherein the shear force sensed by the second one of the plurality of deformation sensing elements comprises a shear force in a fore/aft direction of the user or a shear force in a lateral direction of the user.

4. The force measurement system according to claim 3 , wherein the data processing device is further configured to determine a center of pressure for the user.

5. The force measurement system according to claim 3 , wherein the data processing device is further configured to determine a torque about a vertical axis for the user.

The force measurement system according to claim 1 , wherein the first one of the plurality of deformation sensing elements is disposed on a first surface of the load transducer frame portion, and the second one of the plurality of deformation sensing elements is disposed on a second surface of the load transducer frame portion, the second surface of the load transducer frame portion being generally perpendicular to the first surface of the load transducer frame portion.

The force measurement system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one load transducer beam has a modular construction such that the at least one load transducer beam is configured to be positioned in a plurality of different positions on the force measurement assembly, and/or the at least one load transducer beam is configured to be combined with additional load transducer beams on the force measurement assembly.

8. The force measurement system according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of deformation sensing elements of the at least one load transducer beam comprise a plurality of strain gages configured to measure the deformation of portions of the at least one load transducer beam.

9. The force measurement system according to claim 1 , wherein the force measurement assembly further comprises a top component configured to receive at least one portion of a body of a user; and

wherein the at least one load transducer beam comprises a first load transducer beam extending in a fore/aft direction of the force measurement assembly and a second load transducer beam extending in a lateral direction of the force measurement assembly, the fore/aft direction of the force measurement assembly being generally perpendicular to the lateral direction of the force measurement assembly.

10. The force measurement system according to claim 9 , wherein the first load transducer beam and the second load transducer beam are configured to be collectively sensitive to the first force component of the load, the second force component of the load, and a third force component of the load.

11. The force measurement system according to claim 10 , wherein the first force component of the load comprises a vertical force, and the second force component of the load comprises a first shear force, and the third force component of the load comprises a second shear force.

12. A force measurement system, comprising:

a force measurement assembly including a first load transducer beam and a second load transducer beam;

the first load transducer beam including:

a first load transducer frame portion, the first load transducer frame portion configured to receive a load that is applied to the first load transducer beam; and

a first plurality of deformation sensing elements disposed on the first load transducer frame portion, a first one of the first plurality of deformation sensing elements being sensitive to a first force component of the load and outputting a first output signal representative of the first force component of the load, and a second one of the first plurality of deformation sensing elements being sensitive to a second force component of the load and outputting a second output signal representative of the second force component of the load, the first force component of the load being different from the second force component of the load;

the second load transducer beam including:

a second load transducer frame portion, the second load transducer frame portion configured to receive the load that is applied to the second load transducer beam; and

a second plurality of deformation sensing elements disposed on the second load transducer frame portion, at least one of the second plurality of deformation sensing elements being sensitive to a third force component of the load and outputting a third output signal representative of the third force component of the load, the third force component of the load being different from both the first force component of the load and the second force component of the load; and

a data processing device operatively coupled to the first plurality of deformation sensing elements of the first load transducer beam and the second plurality of deformation sensing elements of the second load transducer beam, the data processing device configured to receive the first, second, and third output signals from the deformation sensing elements of the first and second load transducer beams, and the data processing device further configured to determine a first output force from the first output signal, a second output force from the second output signal, and a third output force from the third output signal.

13. The force measurement system according to claim 12 , wherein the first force component of the load comprises a vertical force, and the second force component of the load comprises a first shear force, and the third force component of the load comprises a second shear force.

14. The force measurement system according to claim 12 , wherein the data processing device is further configured to determine a center of pressure for the user.

15. The force measurement system according to claim 12 , wherein the data processing device is further configured to determine a torque about a vertical axis for the user.

The force measurement system according to claim 12 , wherein at least one of the first load transducer beam and the second load transducer beam has a modular construction such that the at least one of the first load transducer beam and the second load transducer beam is configured to be positioned in a plurality of different positions on the force measurement assembly and/or combined with additional load transducer beams on the force measurement assembly.

The force measurement system according to claim 12 , wherein the first plurality of deformation sensing elements of the first load transducer beam and/or the second plurality of deformation sensing elements of the second load transducer beam comprise a plurality of strain gages configured to measure the deformation of portions of the first load transducer beam and/or the second load transducer beam.
