Abstract

The progressive delivery of targeted secondary content may include determining that primary content requested from a particular distribution point of a distributed platform includes a first tag to integrate targeted secondary content as part of an initial presentation of the primary content, and a second tag to integrate targeted secondary content outside the initial presentation. The progressive delivery may further include modifying the primary content by replacing the first tag so that the primary content and targeted secondary content for the initial presentation (e.g., third-party content associated with the first tag) are provided from the particular distribution point without accessing a third-party content provider, while targeted secondary content outside the initial presentation (e.g., third-party content associated with the second tag) may be selected and provided by one or more third-party content providers as originally specified in the primary content.

Claims (66)

1. A method comprising:

retrieving a page for primary content at a first site;

determining a first placement in the page for a first tag that integrates first supplemental content with the primary content, wherein the first tag is directed to at least one second site that is different than the first site, and wherein the first placement integrates the first supplemental content within an initial presentation of the primary content;

determining a different second placement in the page for a second tag that integrates second supplemental with the primary content, wherein the second tag is directed to the at least one second site, and wherein the second placement integrates the second supplemental content outside the initial presentation; and

providing in response to a request for the primary content, the page with the second tag unmodified, and with the first tag replaced with a substitute tag.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising replacing the first tag in the page with a third tag to third supplemental content that is stored at and served from the first site, and wherein the third tag is the substitute tag.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein replacing the first tag comprises selecting the third supplemental content from a plurality of supplemental content based on the third supplemental content being geographically targeted to one or more regions serviced by the first site.

4. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

receiving at the first site, a request for the third supplemental content in response to providing the page with the third tag in place of the first tag; and

providing the third supplemental content from the first site in response to the request for the third supplemental content, wherein the first site provides the third supplemental content with less latency than the second site provides the first supplemental content.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving at the first site, a request that is directed to the substitute tag;

selecting a targeted advertisement from a plurality of advertisements at the first site in response to receiving the request that is directed to the substitute tag, wherein each advertisement of the plurality of advertisements is geographically relevant to one or more regions serviced by the first site; and

providing the targeted advertisement from the first site in response to said selecting and the request that is directed to the substitute tag.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the page is a HyperText Markup Language (“HTML”) page that presents the primary content of a first content provider with different supplemental content of different second content providers.

7. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the initial presentation corresponds to a first display area that is visible upon rendering the page; and

wherein a remaining presentation that is outside the initial presentation corresponds to a second display area that is not visible upon rendering the page, and that becomes visible after moving past the first display area.

8. The method of claim 7 ,

wherein determining the first placement comprises determining that the first supplemental content is at a first vertical position within the initial presentation; and

wherein determining the second placement comprises determining that the second supplemental content is at a lower second vertical position within the remaining presentation.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

caching the primary content and substitute supplemental content at the first site; and

providing the primary content and the substitute supplemental content from the first site to a client device that is rendering the page in response to requests for the primary content and the substitute supplemental content arriving at the first site after said providing the page with the substitute tag instead of the first tag.

10. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein determining the first placement comprises identifying the first tag to be amongst a first set of tags of the page; and

wherein determining the second placement comprises identifying the second tag to be amongst a second set of tags that is specified after the first set of tags in the page.

11. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein determining the first placement comprises identifying integration of the first supplemental content to be within a specific number of pixels of a particular display area; and

wherein determining the second placement comprises identifying integration of the second supplemental content to be within pixels that are below the specific number of pixels of the particular display area.

12. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the first tag and the second tag each comprise a Uniform Resource Locator (“URL”) with a domain name that is different than a domain name in a URL of the substitute tag and the page, and

wherein the domain name in the URL of the substitute tag and the page is the same.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining that the at least one second site provides slower content delivery performance than the first site to a client device requesting the page from the first site; and

rewriting the page to replace the first tag with the substitute tag in response to determining the first placement and determining that the at least one second site provides slower content delivery performance.

14. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

virtually rendering the page at the first site;

wherein determining the first placement comprises determining a first location of the first supplement content in a result of said virtually rendering; and

wherein determining the second placement comprises determining a lower second location of the second supplement content in the result of said virtually rendering.

15. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

establishing a network connection with a client device requesting the page from the first site; and

serving the page and third supplemental content that is linked to the substitute tag over the network connection, wherein the second supplemental content is accessed from the second site via a different second network connection.

16. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

generating the initial presentation of the page based on the primary content and substitute supplemental content served entirely from the first site;

generating a remaining presentation of the page, that is after the initial presentation, based on the primary content that is served from the first site and the second supplemental content that is served from the at least one second site, and

wherein generating the initial presentation occurs faster than generating the remaining presentation in response to one or more of a distance and a latency of the at least one second site to a destination node being greater than a distance and a latency of the first site to the destination node.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the substitute tag is a third tag directed to third supplemental content, and the method further comprising:

retrieving the page at a third site of a distributed platform comprising the first site;

providing in response to a request for the primary content arriving at the third site, the page with the second tag unmodified, and with the first tag replaced with a fourth tag directed to fourth supplemental content,

wherein the third supplemental content comprises content that is geographically targeted to a first set of regions serviced by the first site, and

wherein the fourth supplement content comprises different content that is geographically targeted to a different second of regions serviced by the third site.

18. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

routing the request from a client device to the first site based on the first site being a closest distribution point, of a distributed platform with a plurality of distribution points, to the client device; and

selecting third supplemental content to provide in response to a request directed to the substitute tag based on a location of the first site.

19. A device operating from a first site, the device comprising:

one or more processors configured to:

retrieve a page for primary content;

determine a first placement in the page for a first tag that integrates first supplemental content with the primary content, wherein the first tag is directed to at least one second site that is different than the first site, and wherein the first placement integrates the first supplemental content within an initial presentation of the primary content;

determine a different second placement in the page for a second tag that integrates second supplemental with the primary content, wherein the second tag is directed to the at least one second site, and wherein the second placement integrates the second supplemental content outside the initial presentation; and

provide in response to a request for the primary content, the page with the second tag unmodified, and with the first tag replaced with a substitute tag.

20. A non-transitory computer-readable medium, storing a plurality of processor-executable instructions to:

retrieve a page for primary content at a first site;

determine a first placement in the page for a first tag that integrates first supplemental content with the primary content, wherein the first tag is directed to at least one second site that is different than the first site, and wherein the first placement integrates the first supplemental content within an initial presentation of the primary content;

determine a different second placement in the page for a second tag that integrates second supplemental with the primary content, wherein the second tag is directed to the at least one second site, and wherein the second placement integrates the second supplemental content outside the initial presentation; and

provide in response to a request for the primary content, the page with the second tag unmodified, and with the first tag replaced with a substitute tag.
