Abstract

A surgical retractor comprising a handle and a blade extending at an angle from the handle, an illumination assembly having a plurality of direct light sources provided on the blade, and a cover configured to enclose the illumination assembly, wherein the cover comprises a plurality of openings, each opening corresponding in position to a respective light source of the illumination assembly when the cover is attached to the blade.

Claims (31)

1. A surgical retractor, comprising:

a handle having a hollow construction and a port configured to connect to a suction source;

a blade extending from the handle;

at least one smoke evacuation channel provided along at least a portion of the blade and extending into the handle,

wherein the handle includes a chamber formed within a first portion the handle, said chamber being configured to fluidly communicate with the at least one smoke evacuation channel and with the port,

wherein a second portion of the handle, different from the first portion, is configured to house other components; and

wherein, when the chamber is in fluid communication with the at least one smoke evacuation channel, the chamber is sealed from the second portion of the handle.

2. The surgical retractor in accordance with claim 1 , wherein when the at least one smoke evacuation channel is sealingly coupled with the chamber.

3. The surgical retractor in accordance with claim 2 , wherein each of the at least one smoke evacuation channel includes a smoke evacuation tube, and wherein an end of the at least one smoke evacuation tube is inserted into the chamber.

The surgical retractor in accordance with claim 3 , wherein the chamber is formed by one or more internal projections within the handle, said one or more internal projections being configured to pinch the end of each smoke evacuation tube so as to sealingly couple each said smoke evacuation tube with the chamber.

5. The surgical retractor in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the handle is a distal end portion of the handle, and the second portion of the handle includes a proximal end portion and a central portion of the handle.

6. The surgical retractor in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the handle includes a curved portion at the distal end, said curved portion being offset from a longitudinal axis of the handle, and wherein the chamber is formed in the curved portion of the handle.

7. The surgical retractor in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising an illumination assembly including at least one light source and at least one power source, wherein said at least one power source is housed in the second portion of the handle.

8. A medical device, comprising:

a handle having a hollow construction and a port configured to connect to a suction source;

an operative portion extending from the handle;

at least one smoke evacuation channel provided along at least a portion of the handle,

wherein the handle includes a chamber formed within a first portion the handle, said chamber being configured to fluidly communicate with the at least one smoke evacuation channel and with the port,

wherein a second portion of the handle, different from the first portion, is configured to house other components of the medical device; and

wherein, when the chamber is in fluid communication with the at least one smoke evacuation channel, the chamber is sealed from the second portion of the handle.

9. The medical device according to claim 8 , wherein the chamber is formed by one or more internal projections within the handle, said one or more internal projections being configured couple the at least one smoke evacuation channel with the chamber.

The medical device according to claim 9 , wherein the at least one smoke evacuation channel includes a smoke evacuation tube, and wherein the one or more internal projections are configured to pinch the end of the smoke evacuation tube so as to sealingly couple the smoke evacuation tube with the chamber.

11. A battery-operated medical device, comprising:

a housing including handle and an operative portion, the housing being configured to house at least one power source; and

a push-tab assembly provided in the housing and including a push-tab extending through an aperture in the housing,

wherein the push-tab is configured to be moved from a first position in which the push-tab prevents flow of electricity from the at least one power source to a second position in which the flow of electricity is allowed from the at least one power source, and

wherein in the second position, the push-tab is configured to seal the aperture in the housing.

The battery-operated medical device in accordance with claim 11 , further including a switch configured to energize the battery-operated medical device, said switch being separate from the push-tab assembly, wherein when the push-tab is in the first position, the switch is prevented from energizing the battery-operated medical device.

The battery-operated medical device in accordance with claim 11 , wherein the housing includes an opening and a cover for covering the opening, and is configured to enable removal of the at least one power source through the opening when the cover is operated to uncover the opening, and wherein the push-tab extends through the aperture formed in the cover.

14. The battery-operated medical device in accordance with claim 13 , wherein when the cover is operated to uncover the opening, the push-tab assists in removal of the at least one power source from the housing via the opening.

15. The battery-operated medical device in accordance with claim 11 , wherein the medical device is one of a surgical retractor and a speculum.
