Abstract

A system and method includes an autonomous agent having a communication interface that enables the autonomous agent to communicate with a plurality of infrastructure sensing devices; a plurality of distinct health monitors that monitor distinct operational aspects of the autonomous agent; an autonomous state machine that computes a plurality of allowed operating states of the autonomous agent based on inputs from the plurality of distinct health monitors; a plurality of distinct autonomous controllers that generate a plurality of distinct autonomous control instructions; and an arbiter of autonomous control instructions that: collects, as a first input, the plurality of autonomous control instructions generated by each of the plurality of distinct autonomous controllers; collects, as a second input, data relating to the plurality of allowed operating state of the autonomous agent; and selectively enables only a subset of the autonomous control instructions to pass to driving components of the autonomous agent.

Claims (36)

1. A method for intelligently controlling an autonomous agent, the method comprising:

collecting, at a computing system of the autonomous agent, data from one or more data sources in communication with the computing system;

identifying a level of operability of the autonomous agent based on the data;

computing by an autonomous control planning system a set of autonomous control instructions;

controlling the autonomous agent by selectively passing a subset of the set of autonomous control instructions to one or more driving components of the autonomous agent based on the level of operability, wherein selectively passing the subset of the set of autonomous control instructions comprises switching between autonomous control instructions of the set of autonomous control instructions based on the level of operability.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more data sources comprises a set of sensors arranged offboard the autonomous agent.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the set of sensors are part of a set of infrastructure devices arranged in an environment of the autonomous agent.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more data sources further comprises a set of health monitors associated with the autonomous agent.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the set of health monitors is arranged onboard the autonomous agent.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computing system is onboard the autonomous agent.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more data sources comprises a set of health monitors associated with the autonomous agent.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the autonomous control planning system comprises a set of autonomous control planning modules.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein each of the set of autonomous control instructions is computed by a distinct autonomous control planning module of the set of control planning modules.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

detecting a change in the level of operability; and

controlling the autonomous agent by selectively passing a second subset of the set of autonomous control instructions to the one or more driving components of the autonomous agent based on the change.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein selectively passing the subset of the set of autonomous control instructions comprises filtering out autonomous control instructions of the set of autonomous control instructions outside of the subset.

12. A method for intelligently controlling an autonomous agent, the method comprising:

collecting, at a computing system of the autonomous agent, data from one or more data sources in communication with the computing system;

identifying a level of operability of the autonomous agent based on the data;

computing by an autonomous control planning system a set of autonomous control instructions;

controlling the autonomous agent by selectively passing a subset of the set of autonomous control instructions to one or more driving components of the autonomous agent based on the level of operability, wherein selectively passing the subset of the set of autonomous control instructions comprises filtering out autonomous control instructions of the set of autonomous control instructions outside of the subset.

13. A system for intelligently controlling an autonomous agent, the system comprising:

a computing system in communication with_the autonomous agent, wherein the computing system computes a level of operability of the autonomous agent;

a set of autonomous controllers that generate a set of autonomous control instructions; and

an arbiter of autonomous control instructions comprising selection circuitry, wherein the arbiter:

receives-the set of autonomous control instructions;

receives the level of operability of the autonomous agent; and

selectively enables only a subset of the set of autonomous control instructions to pass to one or more driving components of the autonomous agent.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the arbiter further switches between autonomous control instructions of the set of autonomous control instructions based on the level of operability, thereby determining the subset.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the arbiter further filters out autonomous control instructions of the set of autonomous control instructions outside of the subset, thereby determining the subset.

16. The system of claim 13 , further comprising a set of health monitors in communication with the computing system.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the level of operability is determined at least in part based on health data from the set of health monitors.

18. The system of claim 13 , further comprising a set of sensors arranged offboard the autonomous agent, the set of sensors in communication with the computing system.

19. The system of claim 18 , further comprising a set of infrastructure devices arranged in an environment of the autonomous agent, wherein the set of sensors are arranged onboard the set of infrastructure devices.

20. The system of claim 13 , wherein the set of autonomous control instructions is computed by a distinct autonomous controller of the set of autonomous controllers.
