Abstract

A retractable step and side bar assembly that can be used for raised vehicles, such as trucks. The retractable step can be configured to provide for significant reach in a deployed position to allow for a user to enter the raised vehicle. Further, in the stowed position the retractable step can be located within the side bar, thereby providing a low profile as well as an enhanced aesthetic appearance.

Claims (42)

1. A combination side bar and vehicle step assembly, the assembly comprising:

a mounting bracket having a generally c-shaped structure, the generally c-shaped structure comprising:

a vehicle attachment portion at a top of the generally c-shaped structure;

a side bar attachment portion at a bottom of the generally c-shaped structure; and

a body connecting the side bar attachment portion to the vehicle attachment portion;

a side bar mounted to at least the side bar attachment portion, the side bar extending along a longitudinal direction that is perpendicular to the body; and

an extendable vehicle step mounted to at least the body, the extendable vehicle step comprising a stepping platform connected to at least one arm, the at least one arm configured to rotate about an axis that is oriented perpendicularly to the body.

2. The combination side bar and vehicle step assembly of claim 1 , further comprising at least one additional mounting bracket, each of the at least one additional mounting brackets having a generally c-shaped structure, wherein the side bar is mounted to each of the at least one additional mounting brackets.

3. The combination side bar and vehicle step assembly of claim 1 , wherein the side bar is selected from a group consisting of a running board, a nerf bar, or a rock rail.

4. The combination side bar and vehicle step assembly of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle attachment portion comprises a first flange extending perpendicularly to the body, the first flange comprising an aperture for positioning therethrough of a fastener to mount the vehicle attachment portion to a body of a vehicle.

5. The combination side bar and vehicle step assembly of claim 4 , wherein the side bar attachment portion comprise second and third flanges each extending perpendicularly to the body, wherein the side bar is mounted to at least the second and third flanges.

6. The combination side bar and vehicle step assembly of claim 5 , wherein the second flange and the third flange are each oriented at an angle to the first flange.

7. The combination side bar and vehicle step assembly of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle attachment portion comprises a greater thickness than the body.

8. A combination side bar and vehicle step assembly, the assembly comprising:

a mounting bracket comprising:

a vehicle attachment portion at a top of the mounting bracket;

a side bar attachment portion at a bottom of the mounting bracket; and

a body connecting the side bar attachment portion to the vehicle attachment portion;

wherein the vehicle attachment portion comprises a first flange extending perpendicularly to the body, the first flange comprising an aperture for positioning therethrough of a fastener to mount the vehicle attachment portion to a body of a vehicle,

wherein the side bar attachment portion comprise second and third flanges spaced apart along a longitudinal direction that is perpendicular to the body;

a side bar mounted to at least the second and third flanges of the side bar attachment portion, the side bar extending along the longitudinal direction; and

an extendable vehicle step mounted to at least the body, the extendable vehicle step comprising a stepping platform connected to at least one arm, the at least one arm configured to rotate about an axis extending along the longitudinal direction.

9. The combination side bar and vehicle step assembly of claim 8 , wherein the mounting bracket comprises a generally c-shaped structure.

10. The combination side bar and vehicle step assembly of claim 8 , further comprising at least one additional mounting bracket attached to the side bar, each of the at least one additional mounting brackets spaced apart along the longitudinal direction.

11. The combination side bar and vehicle step assembly of claim 8 , wherein the side bar is selected from a group consisting of a running board, a nerf bar, or a rock rail.

12. The combination side bar and vehicle step assembly of claim 8 , wherein the second flange and the third flange are each perpendicular to the body.

13. The combination side bar and vehicle step assembly of claim 8 , wherein the second flange and the third flange are each oriented at an angle to the first flange.

14. A vehicle having a mounting bracket for a combination side bar and vehicle step assembly, the vehicle comprising:

an underbody; and

a mounting bracket attached to the underbody, the mounting bracket having a generally c-shaped structure, the generally c-shaped structure having:

a vehicle attachment portion at a top of the generally c-shaped structure;

a side bar attachment portion at a bottom of the generally c-shaped structure; and

a body connecting the side bar attachment portion to the vehicle attachment portion,

wherein the vehicle attachment portion comprises a first flange extending perpendicularly to the body, the first flange comprising an opening for positioning therethrough of a fastener, wherein the opening is aligned with an opening in the underbody,

wherein the side bar attachment portion comprise second and third flanges each extending perpendicularly to the body, the second and third flanges each comprising an opening for positioning therethrough of a fastener to mount a side bar to the side bar attachment portion, and

wherein the body comprises at least one opening for positioning therethrough of a fastener to mount an extendable vehicle step to the body.

15. The vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the side bar attachment portion further comprises a base surface extending perpendicularly to the body, and a secondary surface extending upwardly from the base surface, wherein the third flange extends from the secondary surface.

16. The vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the base surface comprises one or more openings therethrough.

17. The vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the second flange and the third flange are each oriented at an angle to the first flange.

18. The vehicle of claim 14 , further comprising a fourth flange extending perpendicularly away from the body, the fourth flange also oriented perpendicularly to the second flange, the fourth flange comprising an opening therethrough.

19. The vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the vehicle attachment portion comprises a greater thickness than the body.

20. The vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the opening of the first flange comprises an elongated slot.
